Custom PostageWith the newly-released PictureItPostage, Mac users can now more easily join the rabble who are intrigued by putting their own pictures on US postal stamps. While the officially-licensed PhotoStamps project from Stamps.com has been running for about a year, the interest in stamp personalization is just now starting to grow.  With PictureItPostage you design your stamp, submit it to the company for review, and they print it and send it back to you.  The whole process takes under two weeks.  Before you submit anything, though, make sure you’ve read the detailed restrictions in the Terms of Service.

Weather ClothespinFor those who refuse to get caught up in the dryer-as-an-appliance craze, Oliver MacCarthy has invented the perfect gadget-ized helper - a set of mechanized clothespins that refuse to work in the rain.  A central holder relays weather forecasts to the individual pins and latches them closed when wet weather is predicted.  It’s always nice to see real science and engineering knowledge going into common products, and in this regard Oliver MacCarthy may now be crowned king.

DescriptionGame Daily has a great article posted stating that Dance Dance Revolution may be used as an effective treatment for children diagnosed with ADHD. As a childhood sufferer of ADHD myself, I can imagine how a game that keeps the body active, yet requires intense concentration could help channel the excess energy. The article also points out some of the health benefits garnered from the game. If only DDR had been around when I was a kid perhaps I could have done some of the amazing things DDR people have done.

Sonic Cassette Tape DressThankfully creative people like Alyce Santoro are out there to do creative things with the millions of miles of old cassette tape floating around out there. She spends hours recording ambient sounds onto old tape, then knits it into fabric for use in creating clothing and other every-day objects. She is working on a specially designed tape head to “read” her fabric and play it back. Her fabric is available by the yard if you have your own creative ideas to use this recycling hack for.

Energizer Quick SwitchSo there I was getting some headphone at my local pharmacy, which is a definite no-no for the audiophile in me - but i had no choice, when I spot something that intrigued me: a flashlight.  Why is this flashlight different? Well, this flashlight can use 3 kinds of batteries: C, D, and AA.  Not only that, but when one pair dies out you can easily just flip a switch and be using the next set.  There’s no need to even fiddle around in your closet to find an old boom box that may contain 4 or 5 dead C batteries.  Just awesomely practical.

Virtual CultureScientists have taken the concept of agent-based AI one step further and are creating a virtual world inhabited by agents capable of learning, changing, breeding and evolving. The virtual agents will need to learn to survive - make their own food, develop a form of communication, create a life for themselves - all on their own. The sistem will have a series of 1000 agents hosted on a server farm of about 50 computers and rendered for the real world using a modified version of the Counter Strike gaming engine. Hopefully the agents will develop a form of communication - to then be deciphered by human computer scientests and linguists - of their very own. A very interesting read and concept.
