3G iPhone to cost $199 from AT&T

Get this - Fortune is saying that AT&T is going to be subsidizing the cost of the 3G iPhone by $200, which would mean that you could get one of the new phones for $199 USD with a 2-year contract. Now, that isn’t as crazy as it seems, as they do this with just about every other phone that they offer. They just haven’t been doing it with the first iPhone. Now, to be clear, if you made the decision to buy the phone from an Apple Store, you would be paying the full price.

Other tidbits in the Fortune article state that the new phone will be 2.5mm thinner than the current iPhone (which itself is 11.7mm thick), and that it will also include a GPS chip. Pricing will be $399 for the 8GB version, and $499 for the 16GB model, before subsidies. As with all Apple rumors, we take this one with a grain of salt, but hey, it’s Fortune, right?

Pod Hotel, Inexpensive Travelers Friend

Ever get ticked off at the airport because of a delayed or canceled flight and have to crash there (no pun intended)? There is hope for travelers with the Pod Hotel. $89.00 buys you 7 x 12 feet of sleep space with climate control, an iPod docking station, wireless internet, and LCD TV with no remote. The down side is that you have to share bathrooms, you cannot smoke in them, and there is not much moving around space. Originating in Japan as far back as 1979, they are now available in London and Amsterdam, having been built early this year, as well as one in New York City that was built last year. There are now plans for expansion which sounds to us like a great idea for a budding entrepreneur.

We keep waiting for the price of GPS receivers to get down to a decent price so that we can stop getting lost. The Refurbished TomTom GO 510 might be the answer. It has a 4-inch screen, a built-in light sensor, hands free usage with Bluetooth, iPod control, and a home dock. It speaks in 36 languages even if you only need one and you can get a one month free trial for traffic reports and road conditions. The Go 510 can be yours for the incredibly low price of $149.00. Not a bad deal for a device that retails new around $400.00. By the way, it comes with a year warranty if you have misgivings about investing in a device that isn’t new.

3G iPhone details, and there’s (at least) one in Seattle

We’ve been trying not to stir the iPhone rumor pot too much lately, but it seems like details are starting to come out that we believe may just be legitimate. Ryan over at Engadget heard a few things from a trusted source that match up with a couple of things we’ve heard, plus he got a few things we weren’t sure about.

For starters, we had heard that the 3G iPhone would likely be just a tad thicker than the current model, which seems to match up with what we read. Physically, Apple may be doing away with the two-toned back color of the iPhone, opting instead for a smooth black finish. The headphone jack will no longer be recessed into that hole of frustration, and lastly, the thing will have full-on GPS.

Engadget is saying that the next iPhone could ship as early as July. We are thinking it could be as early as June. We know for a fact that there is at least one person here in Seattle who has one, and that the person doesn’t work for Apple. Apple typically doesn’t seed these things outside of their organization until they are in the last phase of testing. That leads us to believe that these are just about ready to launch. What do you think? This is all a bit too exciting for us, as we die a little inside with each day that passes where we have to use EDGE on our iPhone.

Hey, would you look at that - the Amazon Kindle is back on sale for the first time in months! If you’ve got $399 USD burning a hold in your pocket, and you want what we consider to be one of the breakout devices in the last year, then head on over to Amazon and purchase a Kindle. Seriously, all quirks aside, we’ve done a lot more (offline) reading in the past four months than we have in the past four years, all thanks to Amazon’s e-Book reader.

Tame Leaves a Message

This concept could be the answer to our complaining about cell phone users in cars. Tame syncs your phone, IM, text messaging, Facebook application, etc. to auto-respond when you cannot. You store a message on each face and rotate it for the appropriate response with no button pushing needed. There is also a color coding system (green, yellow, and red) for contact information. With online software, you can customize the messages anywhere there is Internet access with Bluetooth updates. We like the prototype but once again figure the best way to curb cell phone usage while driving is to simply turn it off.
