Suri Cruise: Prepped for Stardom

Suri CruiseShe was famous before she was ever born, but that’s just the beginning of the story when it comes to , the daughter of and . Mom Katie took the tyke to see Knut (you remember, that fluffy little polar bear) at the Berlin Zoo, which of course prompted photos. Knut dominated the media and even became a celebrated children’s book…so where will this polar bear obsession lead next? Where else but Hollywood and the film industry, which is reportedly already interested in turning little Knut’s life into the next big flick. Suri Cruise is also being considered to voice the role of the bear, a pretty mean feat considering the two-year-old child probably isn’t even fully potty-trained.

‘Valkyrie’ Debut Delayed

Tom Cruise Valkyrie, a movie already plagued with production issues, has just given us another reason to be wary.  It’s now been linked to two of the most cringe-inducing words in the film industry:  delayed release.  The biopic about a German officer who plotted to take down Adolf Hitler will now premiere October 3, 2008.  Valkyrie was originally slated to open June 27, unfortunately (The Usual Suspects) has yet to shoot an integral war scene.

So let’s now officially add ‘date change’ to the ever-growing list of problems.  (Items already noted include Scientology haters, destroyed footage and injured extras.)  I predict a fashion faux pas - or maybe even locusts - will trip things up next.

Tom Cruise: No Longer a Hot Ticket

Tom Cruise in Valkyrie has been steadily losing the favor of public opinion. All the couch-jumping, weird Scientology associations and media hype about his marriage with is starting to have an effect on his power, once a mighty thing. The much-hyped Lions for Lambs did not bring in the expected sales, and in Hollywood you’re only as good as your last picture.

According to MSNBC, insiders are losing faith in Cruise’s once-guaranteed popularity. His high salary, coupled with sluggish movie sales, are helping to hammer home the fact that the fans are just no longer interested in Cruise – unless, of course, he’s being featured in a tabloid. Valkyrie, an upcoming flick featuring Cruise, is already getting bad press. A trailer was “leaked” on the Internet, and instead of being met with hopeful buzz, it has suffered a much more negative fate.

Box Office Breakdown: Fred Claus No Match for Jerry Seinfeld

Bee Movie

In a shocking turn of events, came buzzing back to life this weekend stealing the #1 spot from recent victor, Bee’s $25 million take also embarrassed the newest comedic entry, .

Although fellow ‘Frat Packer’ rang bells with November 2003’s Elf, couldn’t come close to matching his friend’s $31.1 million debut.  The news was especially surprising given Vaughn and director David Dobkin’s recent collaboration on 2005’s Wedding Crashers.  Could this mean Vaughn’s only appealing when he’s part of a larger comedic team?

Also noteworthy this weekend was the disappointing performance of Lions wasn’t expected to take in Mission Impossible-esque numbers, but the film did still boast , and actor/director .  As it was, the movie grossed less than any other Cruise-attached wide release in more than 20 years.  At least Streep can say this topical film debuted higher than her last attempt ().

, the only other new Top Ten entry, racked up ninth place.

Lions for Lambs

Here are some possible suggestions for your upcoming weekend:

Will Redford Bring A Lion or Lamb to the Box Office?

Lions for LambsWatch a Democratic presidential debate, and you’ll see it’s common for campaigners to malign George W. Bush. Turn on the TV, and you’ll find shows (like ‘s Lil’ Bush) that revel in poking fun at the White House. But that doesn’t necessarily mean America is ready to tackle tricky issues when they’re enjoying a night at the movies.

ambitious features a star-studded cast and the prestige of his own name, but handles sticky subject matter. Viewers will be treated to arguments both for and against America’s military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the film makes it clear where the makers, themselves, stand. Movies that deal with America’s political problems haven’t performed well at the box office in the past…will Lions be different?

This Week on HD DVD and Blu-ray: October 23, 2007

The Shining Blu-rayWhether you’ve made the choice and actually picked a side in this format war, one thing can be agreed upon by all sides—this is a good week for high-definition.

It so happens that Warner Home Entertainment has yet to pick a side in this battle of video/audio quality—a decision that, when the time comes, could end the war for good. For now, however, they are throwing down some pretty good releases to please everyone, and this week is no exception.

The late Stanley Kubrick, idiosyncratic director of some of America’s most cherished cinema, is honored this week with the release of a few classics in dual format—finally, we can all see Jack Torrance’s nose hairs as he axes the hotel door and screams his classic “Here’s Johnny!” After all, Halloween is quick approaching, and a high-def copy of The Shining might make the perfect late-night creepfest. And if horror is your bag, both formats have some decent titles this week. Check the full list after the jump.

Cruise’s ‘Valkyrie’ Suffers (Another) Setback

Tom Cruise in Valkyrie World War II thriller has suffered yet another in a long line of setbacks while filming in Germany. Apparently, a batch of nighttime footage shot a couple weeks ago has been deemed unusable after the negatives were developed in the wrong chemicals. Adding insult to injury, the footage was shot at the German Defense Ministry which had resisted granting Cruise (who executive produces) permission to shoot in the first place. The Ministry houses the spot where Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg (played by Cruise) and his conspirators plotted to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The footage will need to be re-shot, and the Ministry has already granted re-entry.

This Week on HD DVD and Blu-ray: October 2, 2007

Evil Dead 2 posterThis Tuesday brings the release of some great titles, new and old.  As expected, the studios are rolling out some Halloween-inspired classics, filled with zombies, vampires and serial killers; though sadly, only Blu-ray supporters seem to be taking advantage of the upcoming holiday.

HD DVD studios chose instead to use this week to re-release a bunch of titles that were previously only available in those obnoxious HD DVD/DVD Combo discs.  You know, the $40 releases that were appealing to neither the HD owners nor the standard-definition owners?  Those of you who rightly refused to make such a silly purchase can now have some great HD titles for a lower price, thanks to Warner Home Video coming to its senses.  Any of the following films with an asterisk (*) in the title are the re-released versions.

Check out this Tuesday’s HD DVD and Blu-ray releases after the jump.
