Fifty-Five Fantasy Fantasies
Posted by Scott Sargent Categories: Editorial, H2H, Props, Roto, Site Features, Talent,
The opening night of the NBA is upon us. While I wish that the Golden State/Utah game was one of the two nationally televised games, I guess I can live with San Antonio and Portland. I saw enough of the Spurs last summer – remember, my Cavs got swept by them in the Finals. However, I will be watching that game not for Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, but LaMarcus Aldridge and Martell Webster. Yep, only a fantasy hoops fan would watch a game because of Martell Webster. We’ll even throw a little Travis Outlaw in there and call it a night.
With that said, I had a chance to read NBA.com’s Where 62 Amazing Things Happen, and decided that it’d be cool to pump out a list of my own. Oh, and this list will obviously tilt it towards fantasy basketball – as this is, in fact, a fantasy basketball blog.
In no specific order…here are 55 things I wish to come true during this year’s fantasy hoops season. Enjoy.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 6, Pick 12 - Corey Maggette
Posted by Matt Satten Categories: Pacific Division, Los Angeles Clippers, Roto,

The Fig Cap: Uh oh, Maggette yo!
Freed from the shackles of the sixth man role he begrudgingly occupied last season, Clippers swingman Corey Maggette is primed to shine as the team’s leading scorer this year. Elton Brand was the centerpiece of the offense and the rock that everyone could lean on for the past six seasons. With Brand’s Achilles tendon torn this offseason, Maggette has been thrust from a buttressing role to be the proverbial leg for this team to stand on. Perhaps the same could be said for his role on your fantasy team…

The Fig Cap: “Satten said he doesn’t believe? WHAT?!?!?”
October 30th will soon be upon us when the Portland Trail Blazers, sans Greg Oden, take on the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs led by Tim Duncan. And later on that night, the revamped/revitalized Houston Rockets with their dynamic duo of Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady do battle with Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers (as of this writing, anyway; who knows what happens with the Black Mamba with all of these rumors flying around). What else do you need to know about the start of the 2007-08 NBA season?
That’s what The Fantasy Jump Off is all about.

Dropping Dimes Staff Rankings: Week 1
Posted by Brandon Haraway Categories: Disses, H2H, Injuries, Props, Roto, Site Features,

The Dropping Dimes team has come together for its first regular season edition of the weekly rankings. We’ll be here all year, spittin’ straight knowledge and game.
The first week starts Monday in most leagues, with the first NBA games slated on Tuesday. For that reason, it’s a somewhat short schedule that looks a little like this:

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 6, Pick 11 - Andris Biedrins
Posted by Brandon Haraway Categories: H2H, Pacific Division, Golden State Warriors, Roto, Site Features,
He’s only played 33 minutes all of preseason. He only averaged 21 minutes per game last April. So why is Andris Biedrins such a highly touted commodity? Upside, baby, upside.
These are his only drawbacks. If he starts, he has 10-10 written all over him. Well guess what boys and girls. With that stud Adonal Foyle out of town, only Patrick O’Bryant and Brandan Wright will challenge Al Harrington and him for playing time. Talk about a good situation.

The Fantasy Season lurks right around the corner
Will it finish like a nursery rhyme, say Little Jack Horner
Or will it be a nightmare, say Elm Street with Freddy
Especially with the Clippers, save Corey Maggette
Some players will break through, while others will be duds
Drafters will hunt for the former, like a bunch of Elmer Fudds
Some players are all GQ, like D Wade or Kobe
But this round, I’ll go UGLY and draft me Big Z!

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 6, Pick 9 - Leandro Barbosa

Let’s kick it old school and start singing “Return of the Mack.” Because Sarge is back and dropping some serious science on roundball. He mentions my guy in his latest impromptu feature, “I Like To Move It”. I would agree with in that I would take Ray Felton first. However, I would also be quite happy drafting this guy more than two rounds later, as is the case in our mock draft blog this year.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007- Round 6, Pick 8 - Ben Gordon

The Fig Cap: “That guy is behind me again, staring, isn’t he? Can’t say I blame him.”
“Ben Gordon is a one-dimensional player that only scores,” is what many BG Naysayers would, well… say… in a naying fashion. However, I would retort back, “You’re right! But, what’s wrong with that, suckas?!?!?!” Okay, maybe I wouldn’t use the word, “suckas,” but that’s totally dependent on if any of the said naysayers is bigger and more muscular than me. Otherwise, I’m puffing out my chest, flexing my arms (and shaking uncontrollably since this isn’t a natural thing to do), and putting the mean mug on. I sort of say it in jest, but is scoring all Gordon can do?

I Like To Move It, Move It

With some fantasy hoops draft long over with, but many others likely still to come, I thought it would be best to discuss the fluctuations in the draft position of some players. ADP (Average Draft Position) is widely used in fantasy football and is becoming more and more prevalent in the fantasy hoops world.
What ADP can tell us is not only where in drafts players are being selected, but we can also use the information to monitor trends, albeit increases or decreases in value. The following list of players will delve into those that have either seen a considerable increase or decrease in their average draft value over the course of the last few weeks, using a lot of the data compiled by the GMTR tracker.
Movin’ On Up!
Raymond Felton, PG/SG, Charlotte Bobcats
The NBA.com experts draft, though long ago, saw Felton go off of the board with the 66th selection overall. More recent drafts have seen nearly a full round increase in draft position as the Dropping Dimes expert league draft saw Dennis nab Felton with the 56th pick, irking those after him – including myself. Felton is still being drafted after guards Brandon Roy and Leandro Barbosa, both of whom are question marks right now due to injury and lineup rotation respectively. While I don’t see Felton’s draft position passing up said guards, those may want to prepare to use a fourth round pick on the Bobcats point guard as his value won’t be dropping past the fifth any time soon.

2007-08 Preseason Center Rankings
Posted by Scott Sargent Categories: H2H, Roto, Site Features, Talent,
If draft position can attest to position scarcity, people look no further. In most fantasy leagues, owners are required to start two centers, providing for quite a quandary given the decrease in the use of the big man over time. When you do finally lock up a solid center, chances are that you’ll get plenty of blocks and rebounds, but how many centers are top scoring options on their team? Can you find one that will not decimate your free throw shooting? Do any of them hit threes?
Centers are the necessary evil of fantasy basketball, and if you want to survive, you’re going to have to ensure that you have at least two solid options. A quick glance at this list and you won’t find model citizens of health, so even two is a bit thin. Most of this list will be gone by the time round three is finished, so while those other positions are looking very nice, plan ahead or you could be regretting your decision come round 10. Does it hurt to use draft picks on guys that will most likely give no more than four categories? Sure does, but not as much as starting guys that give considerably less than that that were drafted later on. Here’s a breakdown of the big men you’re going to want to target on draft day.
