Weekend Reading: Starlog, Christopher Golden, Gerry Conway, Tarzan and Steve Milo

Adam WestLots of cool to click on lately, from horror and comic book author Christopher Golden to comic book and television writer Gerry Conway, with a dash of The Simpsons and a blast from the Direct Market past with the ghost of Steve Milo. Check ‘em out:

Christopher Golden: When I first read Golden’s Of Saints And Shadows, I was struck by two things: (1) he’s really good and (2) this book reads like a horror version of X-Men. Novelist Ed Gorman plays Q&A with Golden over at his website.

Gerry Conway: One of my absolute favorite comic book writers (and now a TV writer in the Dick Wolf empire), Mr. Conway is excited about the new Predator reboot, Predators. He tweets: “Not that it matters: Predators seems to have a similar plot device to a movie Roy Thomas & I pitched years ago. Great minds, etc.” He expands on that in subsequent tweets, “I’m not claiming idea theft, ‘cause Roberto Rodriquez would’ve been 14-years-old when Roy & I made our pitch, and somehow I doubt…” Since he curtailed his blogging, his tweets make for fun reading.

Vampire, PA: My buddy J.C. Vaughn gave a recent interview to Comic Monsters to promote his new Moonstone mini-series, Vampire, PA (illustrated by the Fraim Brothers). Here’s a little taste: “I think there’s more action than gore, but both for me are story-driven. I would never do gore for the sake of it, but if it’s what the story calls for, we’re there. There’s definitely some scenes. And wait for the third issue.” I can hardly wait for the first issue, which is listed in the current Diamond Previews and will ship in June.

Comic Book Conventions: If you thought the trials and tribulations of your airplane flight to Comic Con International in San Diego warranted a navel-gazing blogpost that was equal parts “I am a hero” and “I have a complaint,” then here’s a guy who’s got you beat.

Batman Vs. Three Villains of Doom: Every weekend, it’s Forgotten Books day in a certain corner of the internets and Patti Abbott’s blog tips the hat to “Winston Lyons” and his Batman novel from 1966, one of the big Batmania years.

Starlog: John Zipperer over at Weimar World Service is doing the Starlog Internet Archive Project, one issue of Starlog at a time. He’s up to issue 50+ now, but you’ll want to start with #1.If you love the sci-fi and want to go back to a simpler time 30 years ago, this is a great place to kill a few hours.

Tarzan: The village of Kampung Tarzan would like to correct an assumption you might have about their name.

Steve Milo: Anybody remember Steve, the founder of American Entertainment and publisher of the original Adventure Comics, from back in the go-go 1980s? Well, he’s now active in the Florida real estate biz. Here’s a video of him from 2006 and here’s a look at his real estate website.

Janet Storm: Here’s someone who can’t quite wrap her head around the idea that certain comic books are valuable. Even if they’re worth $1 million, we should still read them on the subway, just like we should still use that Neolithic Stone Age mug as our office coffee cup and not display it in some stupid ol’ museum.

Comic Book Ink: Who knew it had magical scientific properties?

The Simpsons: Do you have a favorite catchphrase from the TV show? Lots of people do, so let the internets debate it into infinity. The winning choice would not be my own. “Embiggen” is my go to phrase.

That’s all for this time. Enjoy your internets responsibly!
