Weekend Reading: Joe Sinnott, Sinister House and Jonah Hex

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Reviews,

Joe SinnottMy favorite Jack Kirby inker was Joltin’ Joe Sinnott. The work they did together is still stunning 40+ years later. Joe’s heading into hip replacement surgery today, and if you’d like to send him a get well note, Mark Evanier has all the details.

Sinister House: Bookgasm‘s Rod Lott sat down with the 500-page Showcase Presents: Secrets of the Sinister House. His verdict: “You’ll be hard-pressed to find a story that isn’t a blast to read.”

Twelve-Way With Cheese: Rod Lott (him again) cracks open a copy of Twelve-Way With Cheese #1, an independent 112-page anthology trade paperback out of Cincinnati. Says Rod, “The end result is something akin to MAD or National Lampoon in their respective heyday.” I would love to see more cartoonists from various regions get-together and self-publish.

Comic Books: John Anderson interviews Top Shelf’s Brett Warnock at John Scalzi’s Whatever.

Comic Strips: The people who decide what comic strips make it to the newspaper and which ones don’t are a funny bunch. Here are some samples from one that I would’ve picked right away, which is why, I guess, I’m not one of the people who decide what comic strips make it. Steven Thompson posts some samples of a rejected Jonah Hex daily strip at Booksteve’s Library.

Cartoons: When I watch cartoons with my kids we have a great time. Whether it’s Ben 10 or Super Hero Squad or an old Scooby-Doo, it’s all good. And you know what question they never ask me: “Where are the parents?” Canimation, the Canadian animation blog, explains why that is.

Evil: John Kricfalusi takes a look at what is now my favorite comic book: Mr. And Mrs. J. Evil Scientist.

Monsters: John Kenn draws some great ones on Post-It Notes. Think Maurice Sendak/Edward Gorey.

Sketchblog: A new one is up called Drawbridge, courtesy of the gangs at Deep6 and Hypothetical Island Studios. Includes Tim Hamilton, Simon Fraser, Natalie Kim, Joe Infunari and many others.

Patriots: Blogger Lance Mannion’s son, Oliver, has some thoughts about Patriotic Superheroes.

Goons: This isn’t comics, but it is comic. It’s an article from UK’s Guardian about Jane Milligan, one of Spike Milligan’s children.

The Spider: Randy Johnson reviews a book I’ve never heard of – a new Spider pulp tale by Don McGregor and Gene Colan, Scavengers of the Slaughtered Sacrifices.

September 11: On the anniversary of 9/11, Scott Eric Kaufman took a look at the destruction of the World Trade Center in comics, pitting Rob Liefeld and Todd MacFarlane’s version (1991) against Chris Claremont and John Romita, Jr.‘s version (1985).

And finally, Batman is just a little too close to the Boy Wonder, and a little too “intense” about it, don’t you think?

That’s it for now. Enjoy your internets responsibly.
