Ask Andru: Should I get Kinect if I use my Xbox 360 primarily for watching Netflix?

kinect netflix

We're back with another edition of Ask Andru - this time we're focusing on the wildly popular Kinect add-on, and how useful it might be for Xbox 360 owners who primarily use their consoles for watching streaming video. On to the question:

My family has an Xbox 360 but we end up using it primarily for Netflix, not games. I've read that the recent Xbox Live update added more ways to navigate menus and content using voice and gestures with Kinect. Is it worth buying a Kinect just for those controls, if we don't use it to play games? Is talking and waving at the TV better than using the controller?

It's true--Microsoft recently released an update for the Xbox 360, known as the Fall 2011 Dashboard Update, that has fully optimized the console's interface for use alongside the Kinect add-on. Many early adopters of Kinect complained about how clunky and tacked on the experience felt when trying to navigate menus while using the Xbox 360 outside of gaming, and the update pretty much solved all of those problems. Now, it's easy to "grab" something on screen, swipe through menus, and make selections using hand gestures. Even cooler, though, is that the dashboard is now pretty much fully navigable using just your voice. Simply say "Xbox" and all your options for where you can go are displayed on the screen. If you can see it, you can pretty much say it. Here's a video I made that looks at the features you'll find in the latest update:

VIDEO: Lady Gaga Gets Revenge in Marry the Night

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Music Videos, Videos, Pop,

Revenge, for Lady Gaga, is a dish best-served stylishly.

In her latest music video off of Born This Way, "Marry the Night" tells the tale of how her initial record label -- Def Jam -- dropped her after only 3 months and of her subsequent "breakdown" and recovery. Of course, in this Gaga-directed video full of Cheerio love, Black Swan nods, and general craziness, reality can't hold a candle to Gaga's world. After all, as she states in the video, "It's not that I've been dishonest. It's just that I loathe reality."

Is it too much, or does it leave you wanting more?

Samsung Galaxy S II ad makes fun of Apple fans

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Videos,

A new ad for the Samsung Galaxy S II pokes fun at Apple fans who wait in lines for days to get their hands on a "magical" iPhone, which Samsung criticized for its lack of 4G, as well as its battery issues.

The commercial shows a line of hipster types waiting at New York and San Francisco Apple stores nine hours before the launch of the latest iPhone.

"I am so amped, I could stand here for three weeks," says one fanboy.

"Only seven people stand between us and meaning," says another.

Soon, however, one line waiter sees blog posts that describe the battery situation as "sketchy," a dig at the iOS 5 glitch that drains the battery life from some iPhones at a speedy clip.

Another questions the design choices. "If it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?" he asks, while others discuss the lack of 4G.

Bitcasa promises infinite file storage for cheap

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Internet, Storage, Videos,

We've been intrigued by a Bitcasa since we learned about the service a little over a week ago. The promise of the company is that they offer "infinite storate on your desktop" - a one-stop shop for storing all of your data, regardless of how much data you have. We've heard similar claims in the past from other companies, but they quickly renegged and changed terms to a tiered model. We're used to hearing terms like "unlimited" thrown around by wireless carriers, but even they will start throttling your data (or shutting it off) if you use too much of your unlimited allotment. That's actually why Bitcasa uses the term "infinite" instead of "unlimited" - they really want you to know that they mean what they say. The company was founded by a crew from companies like Mastercard, VeriSign, and Mozy, so it's easy to imagine that things like security and data protection would be taken seriously.

We can't vouch for the service just yet, but we will be getting access soon and will report back with our thoughts. In the meantime, check out the video above, and register for the Bitcasa beta yourself if you want to give the service a try.
