It's been widely reported that the Verizon iPhone 5 ships with an unlocked SIM slot, which means you can insert any 3G nano SIM into its tray and you can use it with any carrier. The AT&T model isn't as forgiving, as all AT&T iPhone 5 (see out iPhone 5 review) models ship locked to that specific carrier. However, there are a few ways of unlocking the AT&T model for use with other carriers, like T-Mobile.

Yes, that includes unlocking the iPhone 4S. Through a series of persistent hacking, a programmer who goes by the moniker of Loktar_Sun has finally found a way of spoofing the iPhone, thus allowing the user to unlock the device. A few things are needed in order to get started: You've got to jailbreak your iPhone (one that isn’t officially blacklisted), the free unlocking app (SAM) from Cydia, and an Internet connection. RedSn0w now available to jailbreak iPhone 3GS

We mentioned the Purplera1n iPhone 3GS jailbreak a few days ago, but many were waiting for the “official” tool, or at least one they were more familiar with for their jailbreaking activities. Well, RedSn0w has been updated, and now works to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. You just need to download RedSn0w 0.8, which is said to be a bit more stable than Purplera1n, which will allow you to install Cydia, Icy, and UltraSn0w, if you need to jailbreak your device. It’s available on Windows, OS X, and Linux, and can be downloaded now.

The T-Mobile G1 phone hit store shelves barely a week ago, and in the race to unlock it, the guys at Unlock-TMobileG1.com receive the first place trophy. Apple Slaps Unlocked iPhone Users on the Wrist

Apple has announced that its new update will kill unlocked iPhones. Last week, Steve Jobs cried foul as he said that the warranty would be voided, which we are pretty sure most hackers, such as George Hotz, knew about when they performed the operation. Of course, the obvious solution here is to skip the update, but then those users will not get WiFi Tunes. Perhaps Apple should think of this as a quiet demonstration of folks who want to save a bit of cash rather than a direct attack on AT&T. Think amnesty, Apple.
