The new iPad (3rd generation) was released two weeks ago, and in that time, Apple has already sold millions. The biggest and best feature of the device is the high resolution Retina display. When you compare it against the original iPad and iPad 2 displays, it's apparent that it's a big step up from what we've had before. In fact, it's the highest resolution display ever shipped on a portable device. We give you a look at the iPad (3rd generation) focusing on the Retina display in this, the first in a series of videos where we will focus on a major feature of the new iPad.

We open up the brand new iPad (3rd generation) in this episode. The new iPad (or iPad 3, as some call it) from Apple features an amazing Retina display, A5X processor with quad-core graphics, and optional 4G LTE from Verizon or AT&T. It's a nice upgrade from the previous iPad 2, and is the best tablet for the money that you can get today. In fact, you can get one right now from Apple. All you'll find in the box is the iPad tablet itself, along with a sync cable and AC adapter for charging, and that's really it. Not much to this one, but not to worry, we'll have plenty more iPad (3rd Generation) videos for you soon, including some LTE speed tests.

New iPad gets 10 degrees warmer than iPad 2, Apple says that’s expected

Some buyers of the new iPad have been reporting that it gets considerably warmer than the previous iPad 2 model. Jim Dalrymple from over at Loop Insight was able to get a statement from Apple regarding the increase in temperature:

"The new iPad delivers a stunning Retina display, A5X chip, support for 4G LTE plus 10 hours of battery life, all while operating well within our thermal specifications,” Apple representative Trudy Muller, told The Loop. “If customers have any concerns they should contact AppleCare."

In other words, Apple is well aware that the new iPad can get a bit warmer, but that is because of all the new technology that it's packing. Tests have shown that the new iPad gets about 10 degrees warmer than previous models under heavy usage.

Verizon set to offer free hotspot abilities with iPad 4G LTE

For those that are itching to get their hands on a new iPad,  users looking to tether might be interested to know that Verizon will be offering free hotspot access with its data plans. That means you’ll be able to use your tablet at 4G LTE speeds. That may come in handy when traveling or when the internet is down. But regardless the new feature gives new iPad shoppers more options.

Now as we’ve all come to know, phone carriers try to nickel and dime their customers. For lack of a better cliché, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, when it comes to adding features to your phone plans. That said, Verizon will be including 1 GB of data available as hotspot on all their 4G LTE data plans, that also includes their 1 GB data plan which starts at 20 bucks a month. Furthermore, Verizon is not requiring you to get locked in to an annual data plan, giving you the option to pay for data per monthly usage, as has been typical with iPad data.

AppleCare+ for iPad details

AppleCare+ iPadAlongside the new iPad that was announced at today's iPad event, Apple has also introduced a new AppleCare+ for iPad warranty. AppleCare+ for iPad provides 2 additional years of coverage on top of the built-in 1-year warranty (so you get a total of 3 years,) and even covers two incidents of "accidental damage" for $49 each.

At this morning's iPad event, aside from the new third-generation iPad, Apple announced that it would continue to make and sell the iPad 2. The iPad 2 will be available with 16 GB of storage, and you can choose between the Wi-Fi model for $399, and the Wi-Fi + 3G model for $529. Definitely a good move if you ask us.

Apple announced the new iPad at this morning's iPad event, and it looks like a stellar upgrade. What can you expect to find in the updated Apple tablet? Well, pretty much everything that we thought we'd see. The new iPad sports a 2048x1536 Retina Display, the highest resolution display that Apple has ever shipped, and that's ever shipped on any portable device. It's also packing in 4G LTE, compatible with both Verizon's 4G LTE network and AT&T's newer (and smaller) 4G LTE network as well. It's got a FaceTime camera on front like before, but this time the rear camera is 5 megapixels and can record in 1080p. Running the show under the hood is the new Apple A5X processor, which has a quad-core graphics chip. In an interesting note from the event, Mike Capps from Epic Games mentioned that the new iPad has a higher screen resolution and more memory than the Xbox 360 and PS3. The iPad also supports dictation with the press of the microphone key on the soft keyboard, similar to what you find on the iPhone 4S. Unfortunately, no mention was made of Siri integration.

The new iPad goes on sale on March 16th (next Friday!) and will sell for $499 for 16 GB, $599 for 32 GB, and $699 for 64 GB Wi-Fi models. If you want the 4G versions, the prices are $629, $729, and $829 respectively. You can pre-order one today from Apple.

Senseg haptic iPad

There's a little company out there called Senseg that makes tactile displays using an electrostatic field to simulate the feeling of friction and different textures right on the touchscreen, and the last-minute rumor of the day is that the technology might be the big secret feature of the iPad HD. The folks over at Pocket-link spoke with a Senseg rep, and were told that the company wouldn't be making any statements until "after Apple's announcement." Kind of odd and interesting. Either the person knowns they need to keep their mouth shut, or there's really nothing there and they just want a little publicity. However, in mid-2011 it was reported that Senseg was partnering with "a certain tablet maker based in Cupertino," and Apple's invitation for today's event does read "We have something you really have to see. And touch." Is that a vague clue? We'll know in under an hour.
