iPhone 1.1.3 Q&A: Batch One

iPhone 1.1.3

EDIT: We have posted Batch Two of our iPhone 1.1.3 Q&A.

UPDATE: In case you thought this was fake, Steve Jobs just confirmed that our 1.1.3 coverage is real in his MacWorld 2008 keynote.

After posting our coverage (if you missed it, here is our iPhone 1.1.3 firmware video and iPhone 1.1.3 photo gallery), we started asking you all to submit your questions to us. We set up a dedicated iPhone 1.1.3 Q&A thread on our forums, and got quite a response. We figured we’d better start pumping out some answers, so here goes. Meantime, leave us your 1.1.3 questions, mkay?:

Does 1.1.3 seem more stable than previous versions of the iPhone software? Also, can you please provide a more in-depth look at the new Google Maps? In addition, can you please explain how the iPhone creates an icon for the Safari bookmarks (for the home screen)? Does it automatically take a snapshot of the top-left corner of the website? (Asked here)

I guess you can say it feels more stable in some cases - but then again, it did crash once in our video. Certainly feels more complete.I am not sure how much more in-depth we can go with the Maps app, as we showed all the new functionality in the video. Lastly, the iPhone takes a snapshot of the left side of your screen to create the bookmark icon. So if you zoomed into the bottom-right of a website, the snapshot would be of the left side of the bottom right. Make sense?

Do you see these changes as a preview of what’s to come in February with the release of the SDK? (Asked here)

I am sure a lot of the changes that are in place in the 1.1.3 firmware are in preparation for the SDK. I am also sure there are under-the-hod changes that are less obvious that we don’t even know about yet.

Why didn’t you guys post a screen shot of the version like you said you would? (Asked here)

Scroll up! If you’d prefer not to, here: iPhone 1.1.3 About Screen

Any indication that Apple will increase the ring/vibrate level(s)?  I miss a lot of calls, especially when there is other ambient noise present (like TV or a car radio).  Thanks. (Asked here)

I just checked, the max volume of my ringtone (Music is My Hot Hot Sex, if you must know) sounds exactly the same as it did before.

It seems like they spent time working on the Safari browser. Is there any Flash support or other noticeable upgrade beyond the webclip-esque dashboard icon? Is there any video support or extra options in the camera app? Is there anything out of the ordinary in the settings menu?  Does video out still only apply to video or does the UI (Dashboard) also show up? (Asked here)

No flash support in Safari. The camera application is the same as it’s been since the iPhone launched. Nothing seemingly new in the Settings menu, and I am unable to test video out currently.

Does Google Maps provide search results based on the location found by the triangulation feature? (Asked here)

It certainly does!

Can you save anything to the disk, such as pictures off a webpage or email attachments? Can you copy and paste? PLEASE god let them have added copy and paste functionality honestly how hard is it???? (Asked here)

No, and no.

Do virginized phones survive the upgrade???? (Asked here)

Nate says, probably not. However, we do not currently have any virginized iPhones to test with.

Stereo BlueTooth? Have you tried pairing the 1.1.3 iPhone with a stereo bluetooth headset and playing songs thru it? (Asked here)

Nope - no A2DP stereo BlueTooth support here.

Just a couple of things. On SMS, Can you forward and save (to Notepad)? Does it support VCards? MMS support? Full image resolution uploads via email? (Asked here)

The only new addition to SMS is the fact that you can now send them to multiple people. No forwarding, no MMS, etc. As far as images go, no full image resolution uploads yet.

So there you have it guys. As I said above, keep the questions coming. We will keep answering them as they come in. By the way, if you are looking for an excellent program to create custom ringtones for your iPhone, check out iPhone RingToneMaker.

EDIT: We have posted Batch Two of our iPhone 1.1.3 Q&A.

I will also post this question in the iPhone 1.1.3 Firmware forum but....
Please please please tell me/us if you have any information as to whether this firmware will be released at the same time for the iPod Touch or not.

I don’t think that they should give it to the DevTeam yet, especially since they said this may not be the final release of the firmware.

Question: has the new firmware in any way addressed the iphone’s comparatively poor signal reception in areas of medium to low signal strength? Google for “iPhone reception problems” if you are unaware of the issue. It’s the only major flaw in an otherwise excellent gadget.

I’d like you to send one copy to me for analyzing the bootloader and the Modem Firmware… regardless of whether it is the release version.

Again it seems as if Apple have focussed on a few shiny bits of eye-candy and gimmicks, instead of fixing the many, many things that are currently missing or would need improvement...!?! :(

No copy & paste, no To-Do-App, no general mail inbox, no SMS drafts, no better battery indicator, no way to add attachments to an existing mail message, no data exchange with others via BT, no wireless sync, no IMAP idle support...and the list goes on and on and on...!

Yeah, sure, MyLocation is neat, but the iPhone could be way more efficient if they focussed on the basics first…

why haven’t apple asked you to remove the pics and video. They usually do if the info is too close to the bone of an upcoming products/updates, e.g the new ipod classic user interface video. And why does it say ‘Nate’ instead of AT&T;in the top right corner in your video.

it says Nate because they used a program called MakeItMine to change the name of the service provider.

the only thing that makes me doubt is that apple has not given you a C&D;letter, but hey, either its fake, its coming out very soon or people at apple are on holiday vacations.

It’s interesting that for carrier you have “Nate” and it looks like a hacked image/phone. That makes me believe that this is fake.
