Flash on iPhone is just around the corner
EDIT: The Skyfire browser for iPhone allows you to view Flash video directly on your iPhone.
EDIT: Here are the details on Apple and Adobe collaborating on an iPhone Flash player.
EDIT: Here is an update on the whole Flash on iPhone situation.
We’ve been waiting for Flash support to hit the iPhone ever since…well…it launched. We’ve had to make do without Flash for almost eight months, and YouTube even had to convert a bunch of their catalog to H.264 in order for the service to be enjoyed on the iPhone. Well, we’ve just got word from a reliable source that Flash support is on its way to the iPhone, and it should be coming very, very soon. Speculating a bit further on our own, we are guessing that it would be pretty convenient for Flash support to be introduced alongside the iPhone SDK, wouldn’t you say? Now, we know that there isn’t much information here, but you also know how strong our sources are too - Flash on the iPhone is coming, just take our word for it, okay?
EDIT: We already have had a couple people ask about the supposed battery and CPU issues that were holding Flash back from being included on the iPhone in the first place. From what I am hearing, it was a complete fabrication. Flash has not yet made it to the iPhone solely due to business negotiations. As we said, it is now on its way!

Flash’s h264 should use the same processing power as Quicktime h264, right?!?
Perhaps the older flash (h264 flash wasn’t available 1 year ago!!!) wouldn’t use iPhone hardware acceleration or something?

This is old news

I already spread the word on this back in November in the #iphone & #iphone-dev channels as well as ones I cannot mention
But good to hear my source was right.
still…did you really think they would not add flash?
and yes.. ITS ABOUT TIME!

Alex,
Good read…and it makes sense. Unfortunately, the only comment that I have is that I gave you the information that I got from our sources. They’ve come through for us in the past, but quite honestly, we never know until we get our hands on it.

Gabe,
Interesting read and it also makes sense. I wonder if the GL source is confused/misinformed and Apple is going to support SVG on the iPhone. Certainly less of an announcement, but it would be welcome nonetheless.
Reply to this: comment | thread
Gabe, interesting article. although the end of the article facetiously asks if Apple is losing sales due to the lack of flash. To answer: Yes, I haven’t bought an iPhone due to it’s lack of flash support. Once flash is supported, I’ll be on board.

I also wrote about this http://appleintellect.com/flash-on-the-iphone-will-it-happen/
Its not very opinionative though, just stating what some people have already said.

I think that GL’s “source” has proven them selves in the past with the 1.1.3 leak and I am really hopping this is the same story.

Is this set to debut at the end of Febuary with the SDK?
Reply to this: comment | thread
Maybe, flash can be the SDK. Because the capability of actionscript is very large, there is no need to have another language on the iphone.
And maybe apple want buy adobe????

Why has nobody thought about this?
The Flash Player expects input to come from a KEYBOARD and a MOUSE.
How do you perform a mouseOver with the iPhone? You can’t.
How do you drag items with an iPhone? You can’t. Hence the special app for Google Maps.
How can you use the iPhone’s soft keyboard for input when no text field is selected? You can’t.
There are no battery life issues, this isn’t bad politics between Adobe and Apple, this is just an incompatible interface, plain and simple.
Apple’s not going to put software on their phone that sort-of works, some of the time, if the content developer has jumped through special hoops, and Adobe’s not going to go back on their commitment to a consistent experience across all platforms just for a phone.
BTW, Flash != Flash Video
Reply to this: comment | thread
Iphone wont have full flash thats for sure but something like a mobileflash with limited features.. As for the drag and drop it can be done…

Oh, look, 1.1.4 is out and still no Flash Player. Hmm.
@antonymous: Even if Adobe were to release a Flash Player which isn’t compatible with other Flash Players (which they would never do - Flash Light is for UI’s, not web pages), there would still be mountains of Flash content out there that would not work with it. Apple doesn’t want the message ‘sorry, your player is not supported’ appearing on their device which promises the “real Internet - not the mobile Internet”
Reply to this: comment | thread
@seanonymous - Yes, 1.1.4 is out, but the SDK isn’t. Of course, the whole “Flash alongside SDK” thing is my own prediction, and not anything that came from a source. I am still holding out for that. We’ll see.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA… I Love how quickly the speculation wheels start turning. There’s a good chance my name might be used in the next round of spots also (we’ve all signed releases) but what name is used has little to no bearing on what functionality is coming to the iPhone. We are the ad agency, and we have fun with what content is used marketing wise. Im not saying it is or isnt(frankly i dont know), but i do know you guys are funny. We DO NOT PUT hidden messages in our ads. Every pixel is scrutinized from beginning to end by about 30 people….

If you want to know what the deal is, all you have to do is OPEN YOUR EYES.
*.flv files play fine on the iPhone in the Youtube.app.
MobileSafari has no download, copy or paste. Or Flash.
A light version of WebKit drives MobileMail.app and MobileSafari.app.
So -why- would Jobs want a buggy piece of **** embedding in Mail / Safari when he’s trying to court Enterprise users?
Who are adults?
And not kids who want flying baloney?
Apple wants to control the user experience to eliminate support headaches. And court adults who actually pay $$$ for _reliability_ and not blingBlong *cough* FLASHiness.
This should be obvious to anyone who uses an iPod Touch or iPhone in a business setting, ie to gather information via RSS and not just watch JoeCartoon.com all day.

im waiting for that flash release.. but i know it wont happen soon! if safari could download mp3 files, images, and plays flash, the iphone would be the best!!!

Flash is cool but its not that neccesary..
i would rather have PICTURE MESSAGING .. LANDSCAPE KEYBOARD FOR TEXTING.. ability to set picture from the web as background on phone.
other things like that should come before flash

Its just friggin software…for gods sake that means it is crackazoid soon enough by some talented geek who hasnt discovered women yet and uses the pent up frustration to drive his next project between lukewarm Pizza…
Look I just broke my Brand new 8gb uploaded and connected to T-Mobile in less than 4.3 mins.. and youtell me Flash isnt coming to the IPhone?
or MP3 downloads, and streaming vids .. look if Uncle Steve doesnt implement it the market will… hes created a monster and theres no single compnay that will stop underground development on these this device… we just have to be patient….. or create some middleware to get round these issues…

Look like some of the people here don’t know what flash is >.<. If you had flash you could watch *any* movie without having to put it on your ipod by using websites like filmhill.
ZenMaster, you can’t ‘crack’ new features. apple aren’t blocking you from using flash, they just haven’t made it. Maybe you should contact the apple dev team to tell them about your ‘middleware’ idea. Or maybe you could explain to them that making software is easy and that all you need to do is crackazoid them. Haha.
“Look I just broke my Brand new 8gb uploaded and connected to T-Mobile in less than 4.3 mins”
NO, you used someone elses program to do it for you. All you did was press a few buttons in 4.3 minutes. Clever monkey.

I hope you’re right about flash being around the corner. The reality is that everybody has invested so much of their time and money on flash/actionscript development that we will be extremely unhappy if we can’t use our existing skills and existing hard work on this new important platform. It’s not just about flashy intros and adverts, there’s been tons of recent development in very cool and very useful flash apps.

Sorry, Flash Light doesn’t count. This won’t do a thing for the millions of Flash apps that are embedded in Web pages. (When was the last time you saw a stand-alone Flash application?)
Reply to this: comment | thread
@ seanonymous
“when was the last time I saw a stand alone Flash application?”
? You must be out of touch Sean - Adobe/Flash Developers have had the ability to create stand alone AIR applications for several years now. They can be installed on a laptop/desktop just like any other program. No need for a web browser.
Reply to this: comment | thread
It’s not really a stand-alone Flash application if you have to install AIR to run it. What I mean is, when was the last time you went to a web page, saw that there was Flash embedded on it, and said ‘oh, let me open up my Flash Player so I can view this bit of Flash entirely out of context of the page’ as the above mentioned Flash light hack would have you do.
And by the way, I know about Adobe AIR because I was Adobe’s campus for the release, which was in February of this year. Version 1. So, unless you’re counting the beta (which was called Apollo), AIR has not been around for ‘several years.’
Getting back to the topic at hand, there will never be a usable Flash Player browser plug-in on the iPhone. If you doubt that, read my comment above from February, then take a look at HTML 5, which Webkit is already beginning to support. Video files can be embedded in HTML the same way you embed a gif or jpeg - and since most people think that Flash _is_ simply video in a webpage, I’m guessing 90% of the clamoring for the Flash player will go away. (Sure, a few people will still want to run their Flex apps.)
Reply to this: comment | thread
Sean - your comment “It’s not really a stand-alone Flash application if you have to install AIR to run it.” just tell me that you really don’t have any idea what an AIR application is. You don’t “install” AIR. AIR stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime. Applications are built in tools like Flex and can be compiled as an AIR executable…which is installed on a machine just like any other program is installed. And yes, it’s been around for quite some time - I’ve been working with Flex since early 1.x versions and they are now on version 3.0. So, more than 2 years I’ve been able to create AIR applications.
Reply to this: comment | thread
FOOL! Here’s the link to DOWNLOAD the Adobe Integrated Runtime: http://get.adobe.com/air/
You need to download and install this before you can run AIR apps. You cannot install an AIR app with out first installing the runtime.
As far as being able to write AIR apps for more than two years, Adobe (the ones that the A in AIR stands for) would beg to differ: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/AIR:Release_Notes (Perhaps you’re confusing beta releases with an actual product?)
Anyway, this is all rather off topic and has little to do with the Flash Player on the iPhone. As far as that’s concerned, I’m sure it’s just around the corner - just like it was back in February when this article was posted.
Reply to this: comment | thread
Sean - You seem to be referring to the plug in. I’m referring to not having to install a full fledged program to support flash applications. And I don’t need links to products that I am intimate with.
It’s seems that you are simply a Flash hater… I do have some sympathy for you because it is indeed inevitable that the IPhone will get Flash support. Please don’t get too, too upset when it happens…
Reply to this: comment | thread
No, I’m not referring to a plug-in. You need to install AIR before you can install an app that is written for AIR. Since you don’t want to be bothered with links, here’s a quote from Adobe: “Adobe AIR installation has two parts: installing Adobe AIR itself (also known as the “runtime”) and installing the Adobe AIR application. The free runtime is the underlying technology from Adobe that enables internet applications to be installed and run across the desktop operating system. Adobe AIR applications are built on the runtime and are distributed as .air files.”
Am I a Flash hater? Well, being that I’m a senior programmer with over seven years experience writing (wait for it) ActionScript (you know, the language that Flash uses?), I suppose I hate it no more than the next guy.
And while I’m sure that making My Little Pony animations for your big sister has given you a great deal of ‘intimacy’ with Flash or Flex or whatever it is you tinker with in your spare time, you clearly don’t seem to be familiar with the iPhone.
Flash is built on the point-and-click metaphor. There is no pointing on the iPhone. You can’t ‘mouse over’ something.
At this point, I’m getting tired of typing this out for you, so I’m just going to cut and paste from above:
How do you perform a mouseOver with the iPhone? You can’t. Moving your finger around the screen pans the page.
How do you drag items with an iPhone? You can’t. Hence the special app for Google Maps.
How can you use the iPhone’s soft keyboard for input when no text field is selected? You can’t.
Since I can’t prove a negative, and you don’t know the difference between a laptop and an iPhone, I’m going to consider this ‘nuff said and get back to work PROGRAMMING FLASH. FOR A LIVING.

This article is full of fail. It was published in February and now it’s July. When the heck is Flash coming to the iphone?
Reply to this: comment | thread
Just like everyone I’ve been waiting for this flash to appear to. By coincidence, yesterday I was talking to a friend and telling him how anxious I am about the appearance of it. Now I can’t wait to try it!
Reply to this: comment | thread
seanonymous,
You may not be a Flash hater, but you are very ignorant to the many uses of Flash…
It is NOT based solely on “point and click”... Have you ever used YouTube before? Did you forget that Flash is a fantastic video player?
Have you ever played games like KickUp or Castle Defense; games that require clicking and dragging/dropping (which, mind you, a touch screen is very intuitive for)?
Have you ever viewed panoramas in Flash? It’s been used by countless Virtual Tour agencies and I can’t think of one system that requires you to “point”.
Your development experience in Flash has obviously been very limited… Flash on the iPhone will be a huge asset. I imagine the only real thing that’s been holding this deal back is that Apple doesn’t want people to have easy access to many websites that stream full-length movies illegally, so they can protect their video store on iTunes. Though, some have mentioned their desire to leave Safari as stable as possible by not allowing third-party plug-ins.
Regardless, I’d love to see Flash on the iPhone… this would allow for a lot of very fun Flash development opportunities…....... that wouldn’t require “pointing”.
Reply to this: comment | thread
I don’t see any reason we cant write an app to port flash player to safari and the iphone, just a little hacking. The only hangup is that it would probably require a jailbroken iphone since apple likes tight control on code used on YOUR phone.
Yes it would have limitations like drag-drop, and keyboard input but those could probably be fixed with a little more hacking and understanding of the iphone os. Meanwhile a rough hack should at least be able to play the damn swfs if nothing else.
I hate apple’s iron fist on this stuff, contradicts their original morals (Remember the 1984 Commercial???). In my experience: “iPhone, the worst smart phone, except for all the others”
Reply to this: comment | thread
I think flash on an iPhone would definitely increase it’s usefulness. Not that it doesn’t have plenty of gadgets already, but flash would be a welcome addition in most peoples eyes

Andru, please edit your article! Apple isn’t planning any time to soon to have flash for the iPhone. The only flash available is only if you jail break your iPhone.
As far as your reliable source? I would say that the source is not reliable. When Steve JOBS says no flash in the iPhone, then there is no flash. No point in spreading false rumours. Remember, your source may have been reliable in the past, but when it comes to flash, he’s not…unless of course you view that flash in beta in the lab on the iPhone is considered reliable in your opinion.
Reply to this: comment | thread
I agree, Andrew is in his own dream world. Only jailbreaking is going to give you Flash support. The latest firmware rleased today (2.1) proves this. Give it a rest Andrew and write a retraction!!!
