Guardians of the Galaxy

While Parks and Rec fans noticed Chris Pratt's dramatic weight loss and temporary exit from the series to film Guardians of the Galaxy, little else has truly been known about the Disney/Marvel project - until now.

The studio released the first official promotional photo of the comic book adaptation (above) on the last day of 2013, as well as an official synopsis:

"An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill (Pratt) finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan (Lee Pace), a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Groot, a tree-like humanoid (voiced by Vin Diesel), the deadly and enigmatic Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand -  with the galaxy’s fate in the balance."

Cinecast: Emma Roberts Honors Julia, Wally Pfister Casts Johnny Depp

Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone+ Emma Roberts donned a blonde wig and mini skirt this Halloween, a nod to her famous aunt Julia's most iconic role from Pretty Woman.

+ Zoe Saldana was photographed on the set of her upcoming film Nina, a biopic of the famous jazz singer Nina Simone. Complete in a headwrap and beige shift dress, the actress also appears to be wearing makeup to darken her skin (many, including Simone's daughter, were upset that the light-colored actress Saldana was chosen to portray the dark-skinned legendary songstress).

+ Johnny Depp has been cast as the lead role in Inception cinematographer Wally Pfister's directorial debut, Transcendence, which will see him play a man who will be sucked into an evil computer he created.

+ Michael Fassbender will take on the lead role in the film adaptation of the popular video game Assasin's Creed, where he plays a time traveler who operates around significant historical events.

Zoe Saldana Joins Machete Kills

Zoe SaldanaZoe Saldana has signed up for Machete Kills.

The Star Trek actress will appear alongside Sofia Vergara, Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez in the follow-up to 2010 action movie Machete, and Danny Trejo - who is set to reprise his role as blade-wielding Mexican Federale Machete Cortez - can't wait to kiss all three girls in the film.

"The sequel to Machete, Machete Kills is going to be a lot more over-the-top than Machete. We've got Sofia Vergara, who is a star in her own right, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Zoe Saldana - and guess what? I get to kiss all of 'em."

Amber Heard is in line to play an assassin in the motion picture, which will see Michelle and Jessica reprise their roles of a taco-truck lady and an immigrations officer, with Robert Rodriguez returning to direct the project.

The film - which is scheduled to begin shooting in Texas soon - will see Cortez aim to stop Mel Gibson's villain from firing a missile.

Box Office Breakdown: Iron Man 2 Soars High Above the Competition

Iron Man 2

Only one movie earned over $10 million over this weekend…and only movie scored over $125 million as well.

Iron Man 2 - with help from Mickey Rourke’s powerful weapons - whipped up $128.1 million over the past three days, giving Paramount its biggest open in history. The sequel, which was produced for approximately $170 million, easily improved upon Iron Man‘s $98.6 million premiere in 2008 and nabbed the fifth-largest debut of all time. (The Dark Knight still tops that leader board with its $158.4 million outing.)

Focus Features’ also made news of its own despite coming nowhere near Iron Man 2‘s numbers. The documentary, which was only released in 534 theaters, delivered $2.2 million and a ninth-place finish over the Mother’s Day weekend.
