‘The Great Gatsby’ Kicks Off Cannes Film Festival

The Great Gatsby opened the Cannes Film Festival last night.
Several stars from the film including Leonardo DiCaprio - who plays main character Jay Gatsby - Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Amitabh Bachchan took to the red carpet in the rain for the premiere of Baz Luhrmann's drama movie to launch the 66th annual film gala.
DiCaprio looked dapper in a smart black suit and admitted taking on the lead role in the motion picture - which is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's popular novel - carried "enormous pressure." He told BBC News, "What is so great about this novel and why people still discuss it nearly 100 years later and still have arguments about the meaning of each sentence and each word and each bit of symbolism, is because it's left up to the interpretation of you as a reader. In a way it's a recipe for disaster because so many people are going to say, 'That's not how I felt Daisy should be or how Gatsby should be.' I just looked at it as an incredible character to take on, something that was subtle in its approach but had so much depth and meaning in every single line."

The Great Gatsby … in 3D?

Now it’s just getting ridiculous.
The oft-adapted F. Scott Fitzgerald book The Great Gatsby is coming back to the big screen . . . and Leonardo DiCaprio is going to be in 3D.
The new film, which co-stars Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan (she reportedly beat out Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley for the role of Daisy Buchanan), is one of many in a long line of adaptations.
The Great Gatsby was formerly a movie in 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000 and 2002 (if you want to count the loosely-adapted G). Set in the early 1920s, the story revolves around recent Yale graduate Nick Carraway (Maguire), who becomes the next-door-neighbor to the very wealthy Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio).
And, it’s going to be in 3D. The 3D treatment is fine for your effects-driven action films and kid-friendly comedies, but a dramatic period piece based on famous literature? We’re trying hard to reserve judgment -- after all, Leo DiCaprio is in the lead.

Tobey Maguire Signs on for Bobby Fischer Flick

Reports confirm that Tobey Maguire will star as Bobby Fischer in Pawn Sacrifice, a new biopic about the chess legend’s life. The story will primarily focus on Fischer’s famous match against Russian chess champion Boris Spassky. The two played for the World Championship in 1972 during the Cold War.
In the 1970s, Bobby Fischer was the most dominant chess player in the world. He was only 14 when he won his first United States Championship, and still holds a record for achieving the only perfect score in tournament history (63-64 season). Fischer disappeared from the public eye in 1975 and did not re-surface until 1992, when he emerged to play a match against his rival Boris Spassky.
David Fincher has signed on to direct the film.

Spider-Man 4 Canceled, Franchise Restarted

A sticky situation has just been wiped clean.
Spider-Man 4, already delayed to due to script disagreements, has just been scrapped altogether.
Even though a fourth Spidey film will be produced, neither Sam Raimi nor Tobey Maguire will be involved with the project. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have chosen to reboot the series and bring the story back in time. The superhero will now experience his awkward high school years once again.

Box Office Breakdown: Avatar Stifled by Blizzard

How big could Avatar‘s debut really been? Thanks to a blizzard, we may never know. James Cameron’s first feature in 12 years pulled in approximately $77 million this weekend, enough to win first place but slightly lower than expectations. The movie, which was produced for around $310 million, never reached its full potential due to weather conditions on the East Coast.
As it was, the movie came in behind 2007’s I Am Legend for the best December opener ever. (The Will Smith film debuted to $77.2 million.) The 3D entry also ranked sixth - behind Star Trek, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and New Moon - for domestic debuts this year.

2010 Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

The 2009-10 awards season kicked into high gear this morning with the official announcement of the Golden Globe nominations. The event - which will be hosted by funnyman Ricky Gervais - will take place just over two weeks before the Academy Award contenders are revealed.
Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of film nominees:
- Up in the Air leads all film nominations with six. The musical Nine follows with five while Avatar and Inglourious Basterds tied with four.
- As expected, Meryl Streep has received another two mentions—unfortunately, they are both in the Comedy category (Julie & Julia, It’s Complicated). On the surprising end, Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side, The Proposal) and Matt Damon (Invictus, The Informant) both have two nominations as well—thankfully, in different categories.
- Talk about drama! An ex-husband and wife will be competing against each other in the Best Director race. (Avatar‘s James Cameron and The Hurt Locker‘s Kathryn Bigelow.)
- Despite backing from both Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, Precious is not a contender for Best Film. Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe were both recognized for their excellent acting though.
The 67th Golden Globe Awards airs Jan. 17 on NBC.

Box Office Breakdown: Princess and Frog Crowned Winner

Disney’s latest entry might not have produced Pixar-like numbers, but it was definitely not a frog.
The Princess and the Frog, featuring the first black Disney princess, finally opened wide this weekend to the tune of $24.2 million. Despite having been available in limited release for two weeks, the 2D-film had the best premiere ever for an animated feature in the month of December.
Meawhile, Invictus - Clint Eastwood’s next possible Oscar contender - unfolded with a $8.6 million debut and a third place finish. Although the Nelson Mandela drama came in behind box office vet The Blind Side, the director’s films tend to generate more buzz (and money) as the awards seasons progress.

The third time was a charm for Sandra Bullock.
After two weeks of second place finishes, The Blind Side emerged from New Moon‘s shadow to take sole possession of first place. The movie, which added another $20 million to its $100+ million total, has now given Bullock her second chart topper of the year. (And, no—All About Steve is not the other film I was referring to.)
Despite several new wide release entries, the football players and the vampires strongly defended their hold on the top two spots. Brothers - starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman - came in third place with only a $9.5 million take. Meanwhile, Everybody’s Fine with Robert De Niro and Drew Barrymore did a less than fine $3.8 million.
