How Do American Idols Pick Their Songs?

If you watch American Idol, you know that the judges do a lot of harping about “song choice.” We’ve seen it make or break many a contestant, and we know it’s a pretty big deal. It’s hard to vote for a song you hate, right?
But how do the American Idols pick their songs? Well, you see, they get a list every week. And we’ve got the same list of songs the Top 10 received for their R&B week performances, which will air live Tuesday. Will your favorite be one of the picks?
This week’s list includes a mix of decades and performers, from Al Green to Alicia Keys, tunes like “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love” and “My Prerogative.” You can read the entire list (122 songs in all) at Vote for the Worst.

American Idol Rocker on the Rocks Again

The buzz on rocker David Cook’s last American Idol song choice (he wowed judges and fans with the Chris Cornell version of “Billie Jean”) has barely died down, and already new musical controversy is springing up.
Now, Cook is on the rocks for his “Eleanor Rigby” arrangement, which he crooned during one of the show’s Beatles weeks. Seattle-based band Doxology has come forward claiming the arrangement Cook performed on March 11 was actually theirs, though no credit was given to the band. In a recent press release, the band says they do not want royalties (monies they would have been entitled to had they been given credit for the arrangement performed on air), but recognition. Since Cook did not step forward and say he used another band’s arrangement, there is an implication that he created the fresh sound himself, and Doxology says this is not the case. FOX officials have not yet commented on these events.
