Glee Season 1: Hell-o
The much-anticipated mid-season return of Glee premiered after Tuesday’s American Idol, a new day and time for the musically-themed scripted series. A quick recap of the first half of the season (delivered as usual in quick, bullet-fashion that at times is a bit hard to follow) led immediately into the first few scenes - which featured a hilarious collection of quips and jibes between Will Schuester and Sue Sylvester (Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch).
It only got better from there. Slushies were thrown in faces, relationships were re-arranged (a common theme on Glee), beautiful music was made…and the birth of a brand-new love triangle was witnessed. Read on to get all the juicy details…
Despite their big Sectionals win, McKinley High’s Glee club is still totally uncool in the eyes of their peers. This sentiment was revealed in the very first scene, when Rachel Berry, Kurt Hummel and Mercedes Jones (played by Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Amber Riley, respectively) each got a purple slushie to the face. This was quickly followed by the reinstatement of Sue Sylvester, who was suspended from her school duties at the end of last season. Sue managed to pull of the coup by drugging, then seducing the school principal. And that’s why we love Sue so much - she’s perfect in her deviousness.
Rachel and Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) began the episode as a couple, though this was mostly at Rachel’s instigation. Quinn Fabray (Dianna Argron) and Puck (Mark Salling) also seem to be a couple, changes which set up a brand-new dynamic for the second half of the season. After discovering his “inner rock star,” Finn severed his tie to Rachel, explaining to her that he still had some things to figure out. The combined attention of pretty cheerleaders Santana and Brittany (Naya Rivera and Heather Morris) inspired the change.
The painful break-up made Rachel a ripe target for Jesse St. James (Jonathon Groff), lead singer of rival Glee club Vocal Adrenaline. (And by the way, the club’s coach, played by Broadway star Idina Menzel, made her first of many repeat appearances in this episode). After a heartfelt rendition of Lionel Richie’s “Hello” Rachel was hooked.
After a date with Santana and Brittany, Finn realized that being with Rachel wasn’t such a bad prospect after all. He attempted to mend fences and re-establish their status as a couple, but he was too late - Rachel is firmly under the spell of enemy glee clubber St. James. New Directions took exception to Rachel’s involvement immediately, threatening her with expulsion if she persisted in the romance.
Upon re-propositioning Rachel and being rebuffed a second time, Finn vowed that he won’t give up on Rachel’s heart so easily. Rachel is now involved in what she believes to be a secret romance with Jesse St. James, who seems to be operating under the direction of his very controlling Glee club coach.
In other news, Will and Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) have now broken up. He’s too messed up, she’s perhaps frightened of moving ahead (as it was revealed in this episode that she’s still a virgin, so now it’s no big surprise who will be performing that Madonna number next week), and that’s the end of that…for now. Since Will made out with the Vocal Adrenaline coach in this episode, it seems yet another love triangle is being introduced.
The stage is set for quite a few interesting story lines indeed…not to mention, more great music.
