James Reimer’s Leafs making late postseason push
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,
The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the best position they’ve seen in years, and they’re still not in a playoff spot. They currently hold the 10th-seed in the Eastern Conference and realistically, are only chasing the Sabres, Rangers and Hurricanes. Maybe it’s because the Leafs haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967, or maybe it’s because the team hasn’t even made the playoffs since before the lockout, but fans in Toronto have been going nuts (more than usual) after every win lately. After Monday night’s loss, the Leafs are six back of the eight spot.

The Olympic Hangover is running strong in the world of hockey. It seems like no amount of coffee is waking us up to the fact that the NHL is back on and the players are earning their paychecks once again. The fighting has returned. The real fourth lines have returned. GM Place is GM Place again. But after such a successful and thoroughly entertaining tournament, how many people are truly excited about regular-season hockey; and how many are just waiting for the second round of the playoffs to begin?

Competition couldn’t be higher in men’s hockey
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, Olympics,
Now this is a tournament. Last night, the “unstoppable” Canadian men’s hockey team was almost defeated for the second time in two games by the Swiss team. They managed to pull off a shootout victory in a game that was supposed to be won by the end of the first period. This is the same story we’ve seen throughout the first few games of this Olympic tournament, and it couldn’t be more exciting to watch.

The men’s hockey teams are through with their initial practices and are ready for the most anticipated event at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. With 12 nations competing in the tournament, all of them have some sort of experience on the smaller “North American” ice surface. While Canada (and by extension, the US) have a distinct advantage, there are many international players who are more accustomed to the small rink size than others. One of those is certainly a legend on the Russian team, former NHLer Sergei Fedorov.

Bilodeau captures first Canadian home-gold
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Olympics,
Canada has finally got that monkey off its back. On Sunday night in Vancouver, Quebec-born Alexandre Bilodeau won the gold medal in men’s moguls at the Olympic Games. His historic achievement marks the first time a Canadian athlete has won a gold medal on Canadian soil. When Canada hosted the 1976 Winter Olympics in Montreal, they finished with five silvers and six bronze. In Calgary in 1988, Canada won two silvers and three bronze. The home-gold medal had eluded Canadians for over three decades, but the long wait is officially over.

Hockey Canada calls Summit to discuss player safety
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,
Hockey Canada is doing it again. They announced earlier this week their intention to bring together a number of influential hockey voices for a second Open Ice Summit, likely to take place in August, to discuss a number of issues related to the ice game, most of which revolve around player safety. The shocking number of major on-ice injuries in minor hockey games, including head shots that have ended players’ careers, are on the agenda to evaluate just how much vicious plays are a part of the game, and if not, how to eliminate them from it.

Let the media frenzy begin! The 2010 Winter Olympics inched closer this week with the announcements of Team Canada and Team USA’s hockey rosters.
