Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Patrick RoyThe Modern Era of the NHL, beginning in 1992, has been nothing short of hectic. Gretzky became the all-time leading scorer, passing Gordie Howe, and NHL players competed at the Olympics for the first time ever in 1998, and the league ballooned yet again, increasing to 30 teams, with the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets joining for the 2000-01 season. Since then, the league has enjoyed one of its longest periods without relocation since the Original Six era.

Oilers stop slide, finally

Shawn HorcoffPlan the parade route! The Edmonton Oilers are undefeated in February! Too bad for them that they went winless in January. They picked up two points in overtime losses thanks to the NHL’s generous point structure. A 13-game losing streak dropped the Oilers far out of contention and into the basement in the Western Conference. Part of their losses included a pair to the Calgary Flames who, for the first time in history, swept the season series in the Battle of Alberta by easily taking all six games. To say things have never looked bleaker for Edmonton may be an understatement.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, Front Office, NHL, Rumors,

Lady Byng Memorial TrophyThe National Hockey League has recently been reported as considering renaming some of their award trophies. While the Stanley Cup is not in jeopardy, others are being considered due to the fact that many casual fans do not know the history behind the trophies or their namesakes. The original trophies and proposed renaming is as follows: The Hart (most valuable player) for Gordie Howe, the Art Ross (most points) for Wayne Gretzky, Calder (top rookie) for Mario Lemieux, James Norris (top defenceman) for Bobby Orr, Lady Byng (most gentlemanly player) for Jean Beliveau, and the Jack Adams (coach of the year) for Scotty Bowman. The reaction to the announcement has been great, and most of it is directed at NHL commissioner of 17 years, Gary Bettman.

Madison Square GardenMadison Square Garden. The home of sports in Manhattan. The fourth and current incarnation of the historic arena opened on Feb. 14, 1968, and has been home to the NHL’s Rangers and NBA’s Knicks ever since, as well as several other professional sports teams, as well as countless concerts and events over the years. For those Rangers, the history of MSG and the franchise is thick, having had dozens of Hall of Fame players call the arena home, three Stanley Cup finals, and an All-Star Game take place within its walls.

In this edition of the End Score Report, Dan Devone gives his take on the latest news from the world of sports:

  • Kentucky Derby: Horses built and bred to run, what we feel about it. Dan is pulling for Scat Daddy.
  • April-Rod: Alex Rodriguez can’t be Mr. April in NY and have success. He has to be in it for the long haul.
  • Keyshaun Johnson, the Mouth of the South.
  • Sydney Crosby: The second coming of Wayne Gretzky, Crosby is going to bring attention back to the NHL and hockey.
  • Dirk Nowitzki of the Mavericks: Dirk needs to take the Mavs to the Promiseland, and start going to the hoop to start making moves. You can’t be a 7-foot tall jumper.

Agree or disagree? Let us know your thoughts on the End Score forums.
