Canucks beat Blackhawks and all is right with the world

It‘s a good day to be Roberto Luongo. The Vancouver Canucks goaltender played one of the best games of his career in Game 7 against the Chicago Blackhawks and ended up getting much more than just a win. Luongo was almost perfect, stopping 31 of 32 shots, but faltered only once during the game. Unfortunately, that came with just 1:56 left to play in regulation when Jonathan Toews finally solved him and sent the game into overtime.

Jeff Skinner welcomes himself to the NHL

The Carolina Hurricanes may put in a request to play all of their games in Finland. The ‘Canes won their second game in Helsinki in as many tries – and as many games this season – with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild. Last year, Carolina only won two of their first 18 games; which was directly responsible for their finishing with just 80 points. By November 13 of last season, the Hurricanes had eight points total.

Aucoin excels in the one-on-one

With the incredible amount of shootouts in the 2009-10 season, you may be wondering who’s doing the best. That would be the Phoenix Coyotes; just another one of the unexpected bits of news to come out of Glendale, Arizona. Not only did they dominate throughout the regular season, Phoenix has a record-setting 14 shootout wins this season, and even more unexpectedly, 36-year old defenseman Adrian Aucoin has been a key part in almost half of them.

Record-setting overtimes still not enough

Despite the NHL’s attempt to compress the season in the midst of an Olympic year, it still seems like 2009-10 has been one of the longest seasons in years. That probably has something to do with the fact that there have been a record-setting number of extra-time games. With the final weekend of games to be played, there have been 290 games that have gone past 60 minutes, and another record 177 that have gone to a shootout.

Penguins struggle to steal win from Leafs

It took the defending Stanley Cup champions to bring the Leafs down. Toronto is playing way out of its league this month, having taken nine of their last 13 games, and they’ve been doing it competitively. Eight of their nine wins have come either in overtime or a shootout. The only other was a 6-4 win against last-place Edmonton. Sunday evening’s 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh is the latest sign that while 2009-10 is a write-off for the lackluster Leafs, some minor offseason tweaks and improvements might bode well for Toronto, and poorly for the rest of the league.

Brodeur doesn’t have all the records yet

In honor of Brodeur’s latest goaltending achievement; breaking Terry Sawchuk’s record of 103 shutouts, let’s take a look at one of the other most impressive shutouts in NHL history. The 1930s saw one of the longest playoff games ever played, and amazingly it was a 0-0 affair until the lone goal was scored. While neither of the goaltenders who played in that game are held to the same level of esteem as Brodeur and his shutouts, both will always be remembered for the heroic effort they put in for the benefit of their respective team. That, and the fact that combined they faced 207 shots while not wearing masks.

Overtime points are ruining the NHL

Going into Saturday’s NHL games, the standings were what they were thanks in large part to the overtime and shootout loss points given to teams, which are basically the equivalent of the “participant” medal you got as a kid to not make you run home crying after getting last place in the school race. These points are ridiculous. A team wins a game and gets two points, but when a team loses after regulation play, they get a pity-point and make it difficult for those actually winning the games to rise in the standings. The Tampa Bay Lightning, with 31 overall points, have nine overtime/shootout points. Almost a third of their points have come in games in which they were the losing team. But what happens if you remove these “thanks for showing up” points from the equation?
