Two breakout players for the 2007 Tampa Bay Rays were signed long term today. Starting Pitcher James Shields signed a 7 year contract with Tampa Bay worth 44 million dollars. Shields had a 12-8 record last season, with a 3.85 ERA striking out 184 batters in 215 innings pitched. Those 215 innings pitched were the most thrown by a Tampa Bay pitcher in 2007. First Baseman Carlos Pena signed a 3 year 24 million dollar contract following a season in which he achieved career highs in every offensive category. He hit .282 with 46 home runs with 121 RBI’s and 99 runs scored. Pena had never hit more than 27 home runs in a season in midst of what looked like a journeyman’s career before 2007, Pena’s breakout season. Carlos had played with the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, and with the New York Yankees Minor League Triple A Affiliate.

“The signing is yet another indication of our deep commitment to building and maintaining the young nucleus of the Tampa Bay Rays,” executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. “It also shows James’ desire to be a key part of that nucleus for many years to come. Not only has he developed into one of the most consistent young starting pitchers in the American League, but his work ethic and competitiveness are exemplary. We look forward to him continuing to grow as one of the leaders of our team and as a key player in our future success.”
