Jeff Weaver Finds New Home in Milwaukee

On Wednesday Jeff Weaver passed his physical examination to complete his signing with the Milwaukee Brewers. Weaver will likely spend 10 or so days in the Brewers minor league system to prepare himself physically for the season. Last season was one to forget for Weaver; he went 7-13 with a 6.20 ERA with the Seattle Mariners.
Its difficult to say right now whether this move will pay dividends. Here are the positives for the Brew Crew: He’s only getting paid a little more than a million dollars, a far cry from the 8.325 million dollars he, “earned,” last year. Also, a tiny, tiny, atom sized bit of upside is present. He did strike out 157 batters in 2005. The negative: its Jeff Weaver. If Yovani Gallardo, or anyone else in that rotation performs poorly or gets injured (*cough cough* Ben Sheets *cough cough*), Weaver will be the only back-up. For the Brewers fan, the less of Weaver the better this season.
Some other transactions today, Wil Nieves was called up to the Washington Nationals and Chris Schroder was sent to Triple A Columbus. Why the Nationals don’t just keep Schroder on their roster is beyond me, he was one of their most valuable arms out of the bullpen last season. Also, the Boston Red Sox called up utility man Joe Thurston from Triple A to replace injured infielder Alex Cora. Thurston will see his first Major League action since 2006.
