Disappearing Star Christian Bale

Christian Bale as Dicky EklundChristian Bale keeps pulling a Bruce Wayne on the set of his new movie, frequently disappearing on set.

The actor has bemused co-stars on his new movie The Fighter, which he is filming in Massachusetts with Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adam, with his insistence on “getting into character” and refusing to be seen when he isn’t filming.

A source told E!: “You only see him when it’s time for his scenes. Other than that, no one has any idea where he is. He just goes missing.”

Bale is determined to accurately portray former crack addict Dicky Eklund in the movie, which follows the life of boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward, and has stunned people with his appearance.

The source explained: “Christian has lost almost as much weight as he did for The Machinist. He is so gaunt. They have even thinned his hair—he just looks sickly.”

Find the Weight on Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz in Nine

Let me start by saying that I agree with actress Nia Vardalos. Too much emphasis is placed on women and weight in Hollywood. But every once in a while, I come across a story like this and I can’t help but laugh.

During the production of Nine, several of the cast members were asked to gain weight for their roles in the musical. According to singer Fergie, it was suggested by director Rob Marshall that she and Penelope Cruz each add on 17 pounds. “We were eating our brains out. We ordered everything fried and full of fat and salty,” she told Allure magazine.

While it’s easy to see from the trailer that the Black Eye Peas performer did reach at least part of her goal (I highly doubt that was 17 pounds), I’ve been struggling to see - from any angle - what the Oscar-winner put on. Can anyone help me?

Quote of the Day: Nia Vardalos on Overweight Actors

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies,

Nia Vardalos in My Life in Ruins

“Socially, the issue of men’s weight is simply not a big deal. Let’s face it: is fat and no one ever talks about it. Alec Baldwin just orders his suits a size bigger and we continue to swoon.”

What’s Your Locker-Room Body Image?

Dove campaign for real beauty Shortly before I got married last May, my amazing mom—who knew I’d been wanting to get back in shape—gifted me 20 half-hour sessions with a personal trainer. Fast forward five months. I received a call from 24 Hour Fitness; it seemed they checked their records and I still had 18 of my 20 sessions remaining. (Oops.) Did I want to come in and use them? Damn, I thought. But my summer of blissful post-wedding eating had taken a toll—ten pounds, to be exact—on my figure. I’ve always been pretty small, so that increase made a major difference in the way my clothes fit and the way I thought about my own body. So I said grudgingly, “Okay. I’ll go in tomorrow.”

Since then, several things have happened, all amazing in their own right. (1) I weigh the exact same as I did in September… but my body fat has dropped by 6%. I’ve gone from the “Acceptable” to the “Lean” range! (2) I’ve committed to participating in a triathlon in May… How did that happen? (3) I renewed my training sessions—twice—and am now in another class three days a week to prepare for the triathlon. All in all, I’m working out seven days per week—crazy! (4) I can do awesome man-pushups, and I feel strong and powerful. (5) My skin is clearer… a happy surprise, to be sure!

Of course, to be fair, half my pants still don’t fit, and I’ve been sore every day for, oh, five months.

90210: How Thin is Too Thin?

90210 GirlsKelly, Brenda, Donna

For some reason, everyone is talking about the same thing today: the girls and how skinny they are. I admit, the first time I saw Shenae Grimes (she’s Annie), I felt sorry for the teens out there. When I was a very little girl watching Beverly Hills, 90210, it was hard enough looking at Kelly Taylor’s perfect smile and Donna Martin’s lovely figure and wondering how I could ever compete - but they, at least, looked as though they actually did eat the food at the Peach Pit, from time to time. The new crop of West Beverly High Schoolers look more like refugees in designer labels who just came from the salon, where some kind person gave them makeovers…but sadly, no snacks.

Was Mischa Barton’s Cellulite a Photoshop Creation?

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Television, Photos, Oops Photos,

You know - I would have been perfectly willing to come to this poor girl’s defense.  I mean, who doesn’t have cellulite?  And for the first time in quite some time, looks like a normal woman!  (Okay, maybe except for that headband get-up.)  But when the actress’ rep claimed the Daily Mail pics weren’t real, I had to laugh.

Lisa Perkins told the NY Daily News, “Those photos are doctored.  I’m not saying she’s perfect, nobody is. But they’ve given a 22-year-old woman the legs and bottom of an 80-year-old.”

Digital Luggage Scale

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Misc. Tech, Transportation,

Digital Luggage ScaleAirlines are getting nastier these days when it comes to baggage weight. The Digital Luggage Scale lets you know how heavy your suitcase is up to 100 lbs. Simply clip it to your bag, lift it up, and after it beeps, set it back down and read the results. At a size 6 x 3½ x 1-inch and a weight of 8 oz., it uses 2 AA batteries (not included,) and has a price of $24.85. We are thinking that by the time you get to the airport, you will already know if the case is too heavy, but it might come in handy after purchasing all those tourist Tees. And remember to deduct its half pound weight, too.
