Kwame’s Last LOL?

If you live in the environs of Detroit, Michigan, then you already know that we are in the midst of political controversy. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick had a more than business relationship with his now former chief of staff Christine Beatty. We wouldn’t presume to know or care what the politician does with his personal life as he is always up to some shenanigans, but one of the things mentioned during the uncovering of the scandal was text messages between the two. Apparently there were over 40,000 of them recovered.
We guess we assume that everyone text messages, so we found it somewhat amusing when they showed some of them and had interpreted them with differing versions of “LOL.” Local news anchors either literally said “L - O - L” or “hehehe.” Go figure.
While there is more to the story (including a public apology tonight after getting caught) that you can read if you are curious or simply want a giggle, we wondered about two things. Can a cell phone hold that many messages at a time? And even weirder, if you were supposedly in charge of an entire city, married, and having an affair, would you keep those messages around for just anybody to read? Hmmm. Like we said, we just wondered. Blogs are great for initiating discussions about topics like that.

President Bush Delivers Last ‘State’

Monday night saw the very last (scheduled) State of the Union address delivered by our Commander-in-Chief, President George W. Bush (Dubya). He preempted a great deal of network and cable coverage for this speech to members of Congress and the nation. (A full transcript of the speech can be found at the official White House site.)
The real meat of Bush’s speech centered on the last seven years and bills he wants Congress to pass in the coming weeks. After a ton of hemming and hawing on a number of topics - he did mention voting in the next election at the top of the hour and alluded to the possible recession and economic decline in which the country currently finds itself - he got around to the issue everyone wants to know more about: our troops.
Calling the War on Terror “the defining ideological struggle of the 21st century,” Dubya announced he will require 3,200 more Marines in Afghanistan. He also talked on his Return on Success policy which will help bring 20,000 troops back to U.S. shores in “the coming months.”
He lauded his own success with No Child Left Behind and promised new budget cuts would create a surplus in the nation’s finances. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi gamely managed to keep a straight face as Dubya applauded his own efforts with the nation’s education. Bush called for new Pell Grants for Kids totaling $300 million, and at least mentioned the possibility of renewable energy during his time on the floor. But he also asked that Congress continue to fund the troops, praising those who are currently serving on the front lines (to stirring applause from both sides of the aisle).

CNN: In it for the Long Haul

Cable news network CNN will try something never-before-seen for this year’s exciting election coverage: they’re going to squeeze all the fun out of it with consecutive forty-hour live coverage. And you thought they couldn’t possibly make poll results more uninteresting.
February’s “Super Tuesday” is the event. Coverage begins at six in the morning Feb. 5, when polls open in more than twenty states. The coverage ends at 11 pm the following Wednesday. Results of the polls won’t even be available until well into the evening of Feb. 5, but that’s not stopping CNN. Meanwhile, the network will show live coverage of candidates through the weekend, including debates. It’s all the politics you can stand, complete with tired TV anchors and plenty of pretty poll graphs. But don’t let’s get too far ahead of ourselves…the White House isn’t empty yet.
So that no one forgets we still have a President in office, George W. Bush (Dubya) will preempt network programming this coming Monday night for an hour-and-a-half-long State of the Union address. I always have a bad feeling when one of these occurs, fearful as always that the US is about to declare war on yet another country. But who knows? Maybe he’s just going to give us all health care instead of going to war. That’ll be that day.

In the past weeks, campaigners on both sides of the aisle have changed their strategy and speechery to secure a bid in the upcoming Presidential election. Though many started out on this quest (twenty-plus politicians and actors threw their hats into the primary ring), only a handful now remain. In a continuing effort to keep themselves “viable,” they’re changing their stances and showing new facets of their personalities. (Hey, whatever it takes to get votes, right?) But perhaps none have attacked the idea of showing the public a new face more than Senator Hillary Clinton. And she’s playing this one to the hilt, as her upcoming appearance on the Tyra Banks Show will prove.

The first primary election of the year was held January 8, barely after the smoke from the Iowa Caucus cleared. The results are now in, offering surprises after the likewise astounding votes in Iowa. But the story doesn’t begin with the voting polls, which opened January 8. Really, the outcome of the New Hampshire primary was dictated the day before.

Political Celebrities: Helpful or Hurtful?

Barbra Streisand has recently made it known that she supports Hillary Clinton’s bid for the Presidency, while Oprah has been on Barack Obama’s bandwagon for some time now. Pro wrestler Ric Flair hearts Mike Huckabee and John Edwards recently toured Iowa with singer Bonnie Raitt in tow. Celebrities are citizens just like the rest of us, and the beauty of Democracy is that we all get to vote for whomever we please. But…is it okay for celebs to be so showy in their support for this candidate or that?
There’s a lot of party politics out there, and sometimes the Democratic and Republican sides seem fairly cut and dry. But it’s the people who remain “on the fence” that really turn the tide – the independents, the soon-to-be-registered voters, the people who claim a party but often vote against their own. What moves these people, what sways them? What might inspire them to go out there and cast a vote in favor of a particular politician?
Did the public reaction to Stephen Colbert’s Presidential campaign not teach us anything? In less than one week after his announcement, Colbert shot ahead of other campaigners with a quick 2% jump – more than Chris Dodd and Mike Gravel have amassed in months and months of hard-core campaigning. Celebrities are on TV for one reason and one reason only – because they sell. They sell us everyday on entertainment, on their ideas, on their looks and their skills. So it’s not an incredible leap of faith to assume they’re going to try and sell us on their politics, too. But should they?

Will Redford Bring A Lion or Lamb to the Box Office?

Watch a Democratic presidential debate, and you’ll see it’s common for campaigners to malign George W. Bush. Turn on the TV, and you’ll find shows (like Comedy Central‘s Lil’ Bush) that revel in poking fun at the White House. But that doesn’t necessarily mean America is ready to tackle tricky issues when they’re enjoying a night at the movies.
Robert Redford’s ambitious Lions for Lambs features a star-studded cast and the prestige of his own name, but handles sticky subject matter. Viewers will be treated to arguments both for and against America’s military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the film makes it clear where the makers, themselves, stand. Movies that deal with America’s political problems haven’t performed well at the box office in the past…will Lions be different?

One Colbert Nation Under All?

Daily Show fans got a surprise treat this week when Stephen Colbert rode in on a wagon pulled by Uncle Sam. This, on an episode already promising prestigious actress Meryl Streep. Colbert pulled out a bale of hay and kicked back to enjoy a brew he produced from within, accepting a huge round of applause from Comedy Central studio fans. It was Jon Stewart’s show that launched Colbert’s success, eventually leading to a spinoff and the birth of the Colbert Nation (the nickname given to Colbert fans). Colbert gave Stewart a note card containing questions he wanted asked, then surprised fans with his official announcement to officially consider whether – or not – he was going to run for the office of the President of the United States of America. Colbert added that he hoped to make the announcement of his decision on a more prestigious show. Fifteen minutes later, on The Colbert Report, he did.

Stephen Colbert’s Pocket Challenge

Stephen Colbert, Comedy Central host and leader of the Colbert Nation, threw down the gauntlet to Congressman Dennis Kucinich, who is currently on the presidential campaign trail with something close to twenty other Joes (and one Jane). Kucinich has accepted, and will appear on the October 15 show to take part in Colbert’s pocket challenge. As part of the challenge, Kucinich will empty his pockets onstage before Colbert cameras. Will he get the famous “Colbert bump” for his appearance on the show?
Both The Colbert Report and The Daily Show have been getting big guests recently. Jon Stewart will interview several A-list celebs in his upcoming shows, right on the heels of a visit from Lynn Cheney, wife of Dick.
