Internet Explorer 8 now available

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Internet, Microsoft, Software,

Internet Explorer 8We ask that you try and contain your excitement on this one. You ready? has just released the final version of Internet Explorer 8, the company’s home-grown web browser. According to Microsoft, IE8 is “one of the fastest browsers on the market today.” Of course, that really can’t mean much, as there are really only a handful. Being “one of” the fastest doesn’t sound like too confident a statement. A few things you can expect out of IE8 are Web Slices, Accelerators, and Instant Search.

IE8 has been in beta for over a year, so let’s hope this final release is as good as it should be, at least as it pertains to security, and, you know, displaying websites correctly.

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Internet,

ForceDo ScreenFor the die-hard procrastinator, there is a new beta site that will help you to get things done. With ForceDo, you create a to-do list and set a mini-deadline. That begins a countdown and if you don’t get to the task on time, it will issue an audible alert and let you know how much time remains before you can really be called a deadbeat. While the site claims it is not yet perfected, it would love to have feedback about it and if you have suggestions, send them along, too.

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Internet, Videos,

If you are on Twitter like we are, then you know that it’s kind of annoying when you get a new follower, and all Twitter tells you about them is their username. Twimailer steps up to the plate and provides you with a much more informative notification email whenever you get a new follower, which gives you things like their recent tweets, their number of followers and how many they follow, their avatar, bio, and more. Check the video above for a quick demo. Very nice.

Dynastree Family Tree Building

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Internet,

DynastryWe found a site where you can create your own family tree and keep in contact with many of your relatives. Available in 11 countries and 8 languages, the site says that it has over 6 million trees with 60 million profiles. Dynastree also claims that 50% of its users are under the age of 30. This is believable after taking a peak on their site with its cutesy name and icons. The best part is that it is free, unlike many sites like this and that your information can only be seen by your relatives.

Man Murders Wife Over Facebook Status

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet,

Facebook logoIt’s a scary Internet world out there. Edward Richardson of Staffordshire, England, checked out his wife’s Facebook page. That by itself is fairly common, we suspect, but when he realized that she had changed her status to single he freaked. She wouldn’t answer any of his text messages at her parents’ house, so he went there, broke a window out of the front door, went in and killed her. He tried to off himself as well but failed. He was given 18 years for the murder and Detective Inspector Andy Wall said that the wife had wanted to end the marriage but that Richardson couldn’t accept her decision.

SEAmail, the New Email?

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Science,

SEAmail

Think you get a lot of spam now? Just wait. Stanford University has been testing a new email system that could let users send them without specific addresses or names. SEAmail (semantic email addressing) directs messages to those who fit certain criteria, i.e. “all professors who graduated from Harvard University since 1960.” It works in a similar way to a search. The group has also worked on another prototype where the user simply types in a name and the most recent email addy would be chosen automatically. That one sounds like a winner to us.
