It’s now time for the entertainment industry to take notice: a 15-year-old girl has officially become the hottest thing thing around. Miley Cyrus already had a hit TV series (Hannah Montana) and a sold-out concert tour, but now she has a record-breaking movie as well.
The limited run of her 3-D film, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, made waves on what is usually considered a slow weekend for movies. (Audiences are usually plopped in front of the TV watching the Super Bowl.) The pic earned over $31 million, surpassing the total set by 1998’s Titanic during the same football weekend. (That weeper grossed $25.2 million.) Miley also rocked a stellar $45,560 per screen average. In comparison, this week’s #2 (The Eye), earned $40,000 less per theater. Fortunately, those unable to snag a Montana ticket now have their chance. The wildly successful film has been extended indefinitely.

Disney Testing Magic Connection

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Rumors, Video Games,
Disney is apparently toying with the idea of a Magic Connection System in its parks. With a Nintendo DS, users can click individual areas and rides and find the waiting time. Check out restaurants by reading their menus. While this is still at the rumor stage, it is reported that people are indeed trying the program out. We think it is a fine idea since we tend to get navigationally challenged at large amusement parks. We would even welcome the idea of adapting the idea at a mall during the holidays, so that we can find out ahead of time if the latest hot Elmo toy is sold out before we get there.

More Ticket Troubles with Hannah Montana

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Disney, Music, Celeb News, Upcoming Releases,
The concert everyone wanted to see will soon become the movie fans will be forced to miss. Miley Cyrus, star of Hannah Montana and big-selling concert songstress, will soon be on the big screen. The Montana movie comes out February 1, but it’s only scheduled to run for a single week. Tickets have been on sale since December 1, and already fans are treating them like pieces of the true cross. Tickets are selling (and selling out) online and at box offices.
The movie, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, will feature clips of Miley’s nationwide tour that caused a summer sensation. Meanwhile, Disney has offered no information as to whether the movie will also be released on DVD.
Independent films and other genre films are often released for only one week, and some say such a short release time helps the market from becoming oversaturated. Hannah Montana? Oversaturated? That ship has sailed.

Zac Efron Rushed to Hospital

Chalk up another one for Cedars-Sinai..
The LA hospital welcomed another celebrity today when High School Musical star Zac Efron was admitted to the hospital. The 20-year-old was apparently suffering from a case of appendicitis. According to his rep, the actor has since had his surgery and is now recuperating. (Maybe Vanessa Hudgens can shoot a few new photos to keep him company?)
Efron, who has already been confirmed for the big-screen version of High School Musical 3, is currently shooting the Freaky Friday-esque comedy, Seventeen.

Vanessa Hudgens Moves Toward Mainstream Success

With some stars, it’s all over once Disney gets their hooks into you. Just take a look at Tim Allen, who once had a highly promising comedy career. But High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens won’t fall victim to the teen trap - at least, not yet. The songbird is slated to star in Will, a movie about two very different high school students who form a bond because of a shared love of music.
Wait a minute. That sounds a little familiar…isn’t that the exact plot of the High School Musical movies? Maybe Hudgens isn’t breaking out of her teen queen role after all. In this version, Hudgens plays the popular girl (Sam) who falls for the school outcast. Together with others who don’t quite fit in, they form a rock band.
Shooting for the flick is slated to begin in February, and I’m already bored with the whole project.

Warner Titles Go Blu-ray

Warner Home Video - the last major studio to spread the love between both Blu-ray and HD DVD - has finally chosen to consolidate. Unfortunately, its a decision owners of the Toshiba system aren’t going to like. As of May 2008, high definition titles released by the company will be Blu-ray exclusive.
This a major blow for the HD DVD camp which is now fighting a lopsided battle. Although Paramount Studios (with Dreamworks) announced back in August that it was joining the underdog’s team, it is now only one of two major studios (Universal being the other) on that side of the fence. Meanwhile, owners of the Sony product have selections from Walt Disney, Sony, Fox and Lionsgate to choose from.
Although Toshiba claimed to be ‘surprised’ by the announcement, Warner says its decision was simply based on consumer demand. Blockbuster cited this same reason when it Blu-ray only back in June.

Vanessa Hudgens Talks About the Nude Photos

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Music, Cable, Gossip,
For a while, Vanessa Hudgens seemed to be the Golden Girl for Disney. Female lead of the mega-successful High School Musical franchise, girlfriend to heartthrob Zac Efron—it seemed Hudgens could do no wrong. Until she did.
Nude photos of the star surfaced, a scandal broke, and break-up rumors abounded. Now, Hudgens is being candid about the revealing shots for the first time.
The young star bared it all (figuratively speaking) to Seventeen magazine, saying the pics were taken for someone she was dating at one time. She called the experience “traumatic,” thanked her fans for their continued support, and expressed desire that others might learn from her mistakes. Hudgens also glowingly reported on boyfriend and co-star Zac Efron, though gossip suggests the pair have a somewhat on-again, off-again affair.

Box Office Breakdown: Juno Makes An Impressive Surge

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Disney, Fox Searchlight, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Horror, Music, Musicals, Period, Political, Romance, Satire, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists, New Releases,

Come Wednesday morning, the box office chart saw very few changes at the top. That’s not to say the five-day holiday weekend didn’t have any notable moments at all:
- Strong word of mouth helped boost last week’s #10, Juno, up five whole spaces. The movie - already in it’s 4th week - continues to soar despite its fairly limited release. It’s $15,788 per screen average even topped National Treasure’s $14,232.
- Golden Globes buzz also contributed to the success of seven-time nominee Atonement. Although it only placed 14th overall, the romantic weeper scored a $15,764 average.
- Alvin and the Chipmunks outmuscled last week’s #2, I Am Legend. The family-friendly flick traded spots with the Will Smith blockbuster thanks to its $2.5 million edge.
- The Debaters narrowly missed a place in the Top Ten despite its connection to both Denzel Washington and Oprah. You heard it right - the talk show host’s touch does not always mean gold.
- Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story followed up its disappointing debut with another out of tune performance. The musical satire plummeted five spots all the way down to #13.

Box Office Breakdown: Book of Secrets a National Hit

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Disney, Fox Searchlight, New Line, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Horror, Music, Musicals, Period, Political, Romance, Satire, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists, New Releases,

This holiday weekend introduced a slew of big-ticket features in our cineplexes. It also brought us a wide cast of former Oscar-winners competing for our theater dollars. By Monday, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Johnny Depp, Hilary Swank and Oscar-nominee John C. Reilly had all made entries into the Top Ten - but it was Nicolas Cage who wound up striking gold.
National Treasure: Book of Secrets earned $45 million, an increase of $10 million over the 2004 original. This was the second hit for Cage this year, following the critically-panned Ghost Rider. In addition to having the weekend’s best gross, Secrets also had the best average of any movie over those three days. Although Charlie Wilson’s War‘s fourth place was respectable (especially for a politically-based film these days), its $3760 per screen take clearly set it apart from this week’s champ. In contrast, Juno earned an $11,184 average for an impressive 10th place finish.

Amy Adams’ Enchanted Life

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Disney, Animation, Family, Casting, Celebrity Gossip, New Releases, Upcoming Releases,
Though I have to admit I was personally shocked, the Disney flick Enchanted, which offered a meld of cartoon melodrama and live-action sequences which were amazingly even more over-the-top, became one of the biggest stars of the early holiday movie season. Amy Adams, who played the princess, even snagged a jaw-dropping (on my end) Golden Globe nomination. But now Adams isn’t sure where to take her career.
The thirty-three year old film star pondered the definition of success in a recent Newsweek interview, in which she said she has neither children nor a wedding ring. Adams now has two pictures in the works which couldn’t be more different from cartoonish Disney. Doubt will show the story of two nuns who grapple with the heady issue of sexual abuse, while Sunshine Clearing features two crime scene cleanup sisters.
