Giuliana Rancic to Undergo Double Mastectomy

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Television,

Giuliana Rancic and her husbandGiuliana Rancic is to undergo a double mastectomy. The E! News presenter - who revealed she was suffering from the early stages of breast cancer in October - has decided to opt for the procedure after a double lumpectomy failed to fully remove cancerous growths in both breasts and her lymph nodes.

"To be honest, all it came down to was choosing to live and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life. It could have come back more aggressively next time, so for me it was just more important to get the cancer out. With the double mastectomy I now have less than one per cent chance of getting it back, otherwise it was 20, 30 or 40 per cent chance and for me it wasn't worth it," she explained on The Today Show.

The 36-year-old star - who made a pros and cons list to decide whether to undergo the procedure - also praised her entrepreneur husband Bill, admitting her cancer battle has made the couple stronger: "Bill said to me, 'I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid. I don't care about the physical portion of this, so let's just get you healthy.' Bill's been the world to me through this, he brought some laughter to the process and reminded me who we are as a couple. It's made us stronger. I couldn't be more at peace with the decision. I still break down some nights when it's quiet in bed, it's easy to just start crying and be very sad, but I'm OK."

Could Steve Jobs have lived had he simply opted for traditional cancer treatment?

Steve Jobs cancer treatment

While browsing through Quora yesterday, I came across a question titled "Why did Steve Jobs choose not to effectively treat his cancer?" As someone who was deeply saddened by the death of Steve Jobs, I stopped and clicked to give it a read. If you're unfamiliar, Quora is a site that lets anyone ask a question, and anyone else can answer those questions. It works pretty well. The best answers get voted up by the community. As of this writing, there's an answer that has over 500 votes, written by Ramzi Amri, a surgical oncologist and Harvard medical faculty member. And it's chilling to read.

In a nutshell, Amri states that in his expert opinion, had Steve Jobs chosen to treat his pancreatic cancer using traditional methods from the get-go, he would likely have made a full recovery due to the type of cancer he had. Instead, Steve decided to undergo all sorts of alternative treatment options before opting for conventional medicine, and "it seems sound to assume that Mr. Jobs' choice for alternative medicine could have led to an unnecessary early death."

The post goes on to explain, in remarkably undertandable detail, the type of cancer that Jobs had, how it could have been treated, and why it would likely have been a success. It also talks about what happened instead due to Steve waiting and putting off traditional treatment.

Now, we aren't doctors (nor do we play them on TV,) but if true, we can say that it's a damn shame that the reason for the loss of Steve Jobs at the early age of 56 may have been avoided simply by making the decision to go with the traditional (highly successful) treatment for his condition. Of course, how we are all taken care of is our own personal choice, a choice that Steve himself had as well, but that makes it no less difficult to fathom.

Are the Steve Jobs death watch fears unwarranted?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Editorial, Features, Rumors,

steve jobs cancer treatmentA story broke late yesterday about Steve Jobs being seen attending the Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, California, the same center where actor Patrick Swayze sought treatment before his death. The source: The National Enquirer.

Given the source, the claim is questionable, though the Enquirer has been right about matters surrounding secretive public figures before (as former presidential candidate John Edwards can attest). Radar Online says it has confirmed the story, but it didn't say how.

Given that we know Jobs is currently on medical leave from Apple, and that he's had cancer before, the report that Jobs may be seeking treatment at a cancer center isn't surprising. The Enquirer even has photos of what it says is Jobs, supposedly looking extremely thin. A few sites have posted some of the photos, though it's hard to tell how thin the person is, or if he's just wearing baggy clothing.

The Enquirer report takes some big leaps, however, on the scant evidence. Enlisting two doctors, who have never even met Jobs, to make a diagnosis based on what's in the photos, the Enquirer says Jobs may have lost large portion of his muscle mass and probably has just "weeks to live."

Michael Douglas Set to Finish Cancer Treatment

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies,

Michael Douglas has just one cancer treatment remaining.

The Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps star, who was diagnosed with a tumor in his throat in August, is currently undergoing eight weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, and will undergo his final session this week. His recovery is then expected to take a further six weeks, with the Oscar-winning actor then to be subjected to periodic check-ups.

“No further treatments are scheduled after this week. He’s really happy about it ending. He was determined not to have a feeding tube, and he didn’t have to have one,” his publicist, Allen Burry, said.

Although the 66-year-old actor is expected to make a full recovery from the illness, he may not make anymore films. Instead, Michael reportedly wants to spend as much time with his family, wife and their two children, Dylan, 10, and Carys, seven, as he can.

“This is a man in the middle of a gigantic fight, and he wants to conserve his energy and resources. If he beats this, he intends to focus on spending time with his family. He looks like he has aged 10 years in weeks,” a friend explained.

Christina Applegate Designs Jewelry to Raise Cancer Awareness

Christina Applegate has designed a necklace to raise money for charity.

The actress, who has successfully fought breast cancer, has teamed up jewelery designer Alex Woo to create a new pendant in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, with the proceeds going to her Right Action for Women foundation.

“This piece reminds me so much of the roses I made out of ribbons for my friends and family while in the hospital. I am so grateful to Alex for creating such a beautiful piece to benefit Right Action for Women. Proceeds from the necklace will help women at high risk for breast cancer get the screenings and testing they need to beat this disease,” said Christina, who is pregnant with her first child.

The tree and branches within the pendant come in either gold and silver and represent balance, peace, harmony and the curves of a woman, while the seven leaves are designed to signify each day of the week, reminding women to live everyday to the fullest. The necklace can be purchased from alexwoo.com.
