Microsoft has recently announced that they are taking the Windows CE/Windows Mobile codebase and creating a stable operating system aimed at in car use. The operating system is being called Windows Automotive 5.0 and will feature support for multimedia, GPS, a slew of wireless communications (Bluetooth, 802.11, UPnP, USB, XML, SOAP, and a few others) and support for multiple processors, screens, and activities at the same time. For instance the driver can have a large dash mounted screen showing turn by turn GPS directions while the kids are in the back seat watching a DVD or WMV file stored on a HDD in the trunk. Microsoft is working with BMW, Citroën, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and Volvo to integrate Windows Automotive 5.0 into cars in the coming years. It will be interesting to see if built in systems like this or custom systems end up being better.

Verizon doesn’t want you to use your EV-DO phones as BlueTooth modems, but really - who cares what they want? While it was previously thought impossible, DavesiPaq has put up information on how to hack into your Samsung i730 to use it as an EV-DO modem over BlueTooth or USB. Like many other phones, it involves using the username “yourtendigitnumber@vzw3g.com” with the password “vzw”. Unfortunately, there is a lot more to this. Check them out for the full details.

We have generally really liked the products that SCOTTeVEST thinks up and puts out there for geek consumption. It’s great to have a simple, easy way to carry all of your gear without having to carry bags or clip-ons. Recently, they released their simplest item yet - The SCOTTeVEST TEC T-Shirt. Instead of having a multitude of hidden pockets like most of the rest of their line, the SeV T-Shirt has just one pocket. Here in Seattle we are blessed with a very technology centric culture. With companies like Microsoft, Adobe, Amazon, and Real Networks headquartered here we have a healthy geek population. This technology centric approach has even touched our local news stations: King 5 has started a group blog composed of it’s news staff including reporters, producers, photographers, and meteorologists. They have taken a bit of a leap of faith and enabled open commenting. This is a pretty gutsy move for a TV station to make and it’s going to be interesting to see how it works out.

The official site of the first next generation gaming console to hit the store shelves has been updated and includes new videos and content. One of those videos worth noting is a commercial type video where a variety of people start visiting a guy after he turns his Xbox 360 on. The song in the background shouts, “Come on everybody!” as more and more people enter the room appearing to be from all over the world. Could this be the catch phrase that replaces the current “It’s good to play together”? Also something very cool on the site is the ability for you to “preview” the media guide. We have read all about this media experience, but to actually see it in action is a lot better than reading about it. I for one cannot wait until this box is sitting next to my television.

But the real question is: can this cell phone play Tetris?

Thankfully creative people like Alyce Santoro are out there to do creative things with the millions of miles of old cassette tape floating around out there. She spends hours recording ambient sounds onto old tape, then knits it into fabric for use in creating clothing and other every-day objects. She is working on a specially designed tape head to “read” her fabric and play it back. Her fabric is available by the yard if you have your own creative ideas to use this recycling hack for.
