We thought that the new Elmo Live was a bit eerie, but it turns out that an “Elmo Knows Your Name” really did get spooky after 2 year-old James’ mom changed the batteries. Although the toy is programmed to say over 100 phrases, we don’t believe that “Kill James” is one of them. Fisher Price has offered to replace the child’s companion, but we are thinking if mom is smart, she should hang on to it and pass it on to someone who could figure out why Elmo has such rage. Then again, she could probably make a killing on eBay.

If you like your USB toys a bit less animated than the Tengu, you might consider the peacefulness of this little USB Owl. With a mini-weight of only 3.40kg, he blinks and rolls his eyes and rotates his head just like a real one, well almost. In case he doesn’t like just sitting on your tower or speaker, a tree-stump is provided. Pre-order this bit of wisdom for your cutesy USB creatures collection from Thumbs Up for £12.99 (~$26.00.)

One of your buds got a StompIO, but you are Mr./Ms. Keyboard. You might want to look into the Kaossilator Touchpad Music Synthesizer. With its innovative touchpad, you merely have to wiggle a finger to change pitch or move it up and down for a different sound. If you need a drummer, it has dozens of beats included or you can do it yourself. There are also sound effects to toss into the mix. All told it holds over 100 programs. The synthesizer runs on 4AA batteries (not included) for up to 5 hours and comes with a price of $199.99.

Monty the TenguCreator Crispin Jones was kind enough to send us a Tengu, knowing that no one can ever have enough friends, even if they are electronic ones. We nicknamed ours Monty, and from the time we plugged him into the USB port, he was instantly on, albeit asleep. No software is needed to get him to do his thing. We have a full review and video of our 2 3/4 x 1 3/4 x 1/2-inch buddy awake after the jump.

(Thanks, Crispin and Mike)

British drone makers from the GFS Projects, who have been given a research contract from the U.S. Army, will be flying (literally) back across the pond to partake in the Grand Challenge in August. They will be entering one of their 31-inch diameter saucers which they feel, according to the competition rules, is an “autonomous or semi autonomous system designed to detect, identify, monitor and report the position of a wide range of threats within a complex military urban environment, including within individual buildings.”

So if you think you espied a UFO kicking around the planet sometime, you may be seeing the real thing.

Hook up Mr. Jones’ Tengu to your USB port and he will light up and lip sync to music, voices or any other noise you prefer with no additional software. He features different expressions, depending on what he spits out, and goes to sleep when there is nothing to talk or sing about. He also responds to loud noises and interference by outside sources such as you blowing on him. We dig the little guy’s YouTube audition which includes the Beatles’ “I’m Only Sleeping.” Get your own pet Tengu for £24.99 (~$36.00.)

Since most robots are made to serve, it’s nice to discover one that solely entertains. Engineered Arts’ RoboThespians speak, sing, tell stories, and do a dance step or two. You can watch it perform Robert Shaw in “Jaws,” something very “Alien,” “C3PO,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” and our fave of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. If you are fortunate enough to live in the UK, you can see them perform at The Eden Project in Cornwall. If not, there is always YouTube. It ain’t Shakespeare, but it is amusing.
