Sony Memory Stick Duo Entertainment PackageSony has introduced the new Memory Stick Duo Entertainment Pack that includes the ability to unlock 1 of 4 movies for playback on the Sony PSP.  The package allows PSP owners to play back from the memory stick one of the following movies, Hitch, S.W.A.T., The Grudge, or XXX: State of the Union.  The Memory Stick Duo Entertainment Pack comes in 1 and 2 GB sizes and retails for $60 and $100.  A 1 GB Memory Stick Duo without a movie currently goes for about $60 at Bestbuy, making the Entertainment Pack a good deal.  Sony is definitely starting to take steps in the right direction for distributing movies for the PSP.

UMDEarlier today a Target employee sent a tip to Kotaku, letting them know that Target has started pulling UMD movies from their stores.  The story has since been confirmed and Targets nationwide will no longer be stocking UMD movies.  Target will still sell the UMD movies on their website and the current store inventory is being sent to Target headquarters for online fulfillment, which means no clearance deals on UMD movies yet.

White PSP System Sony may think twice next time before it decides to post an edgy new PSP ad - after days of pressure, Sony has finally agreed to pull its controversial “White is Coming” PSP ad (as previously blogged about here). In a statement found on Reuters, Sony concedes:

“We recognise that the subject matter of one specific image may have caused concern in some countries not directly affected by the advertising. As a result, we have now withdrawn the campaign.”

Personally, the phrasing of “concern in some countries not directly affected by the advertising” seems a bit snarky to me - the Sony rep is obviously referring to the fact that while the ad was posted in the Dutch market, it seemed to raise the most ire here in the US. Still, I for one am glad that Sony can still admit its mistakes once in a while.

Ctrl Alt Del Sony Parody

Sony’s latest European ad campaign has certainly caused a ruckus here in the US.  Many readers have found racial overtones in the current ad campaign.  Ctrl-Alt-Del has taken the initiative to provide Nintendo with a controversial ad to piggyback on Sony’s latest campaign.  Judging from the ad Nintendo doesn’t like game consoles that “got back”.

Valkyrie Profile SilmeriaNew Super Mario Bros. has finally been pushed from the top of the best seller’s list in Japan. Gamers who bet that a Square-Enix published title would accomplish this feat scored a win, as Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria took the top spot. The tri-Ace developed game sold 281,510 copies between the 19th and 25th of June. Mario is still no slouch, clocking in at 170,168 units. The Magic Box’s translation of the latest Media Create numbers show five other DS titles in the top ten, including Animal Crossing, Digimon Story, and three DS training titles. SNK Playmore’s latest entry in the King of Fighters series debuted at sixth on the list, with 28,015 copies sold.

Despite Mario’s loss in the rankings, the DS Lite was still the number one seller, with gamers picking up another 157,022 consoles, and no other console even came close. The Playstation 2 still has legs in Japan, with 25,467 units sold. Apparently, there are still some diehard Xbox fans living the dream; 10 people picked up that console last week.

PSP Advertisement

Sony seems to be hiring a lot of edgy marketers over in the UK, and their advertisements for the PSP have been taking a lot of heat recently. Sony had 45 complaints filed against it for its original PSP ads, which said things like “Strong language and scenes of a sexual nature here”, “Your girlfriends white bits here”, and my vote for the worst “Take a Running Jump Here”, which was placed next to some subway tracks.

Evidently Sony wasn’t fazed by this negative press, as they’ve gone ahead and started posting the ad above (currently spotted in the Netherlands), which features a white woman aggressively handling a black woman and looming over her as an advertisement for the white PSP. I think most folks would agree that the ad is a little bit distasteful. But hey, at least they didn’t go so far as to have anyone dressed in KKK garb (yet).

Perhaps Sony is taking to heart the mantra that any press is good press, but I wonder how long it might be until they start alienating some of their potential customers.

Power Stone Collection

Power Stone Portable will be released in Japan on October 12, and Game Watch has some new screenshots from Capcom. The game should also hit US shores in October as Power Stone Collection.

As previously announced, the game includes both the original Power Stone, and Power Stone 2. In addition, players can use the four new characters introduced in the sequel on the original game. The new screenshots show off battle stages from Power Stone and Power Stone 2, but the shots seem to have lost a little detail in translation; textures just don’t seem to be as sharp as the original game. Of course, when the game is in motion and on the smaller screen of the PSP, this may not matter.

Still, it will be good to have a translation of this popular arcade and Dreamcast game on a portable platform.

Tekken Dark Resurrection PSP

It looks like Game Watch Japan has been favored by Bandai Namco lately, since they’ve gotten the goods on Ridge Racer 2 recently, and now they have some brand new screens of Tekken: Dark Resurrection on the PSP.

The new shots show off some of the moves of the three new characters in Dark Resurrection. Armor King reappears after his absence in Tekken 4 and 5. The other characters, Lili and Dragunov should mix things up as well, with their own unique fighting styles.

In addition to the character changes, Dark Resurrection for the PSP will also support worldwide ranking comparison on the Internet through via infrastructure mode. Hints are made that rankings will be download-able as wallpaper, in addition to the previously announced ghost data downloads.

Ridge Racer 2 PSP

Bandai Namco recently announced Ridge Racer 2 and now a bunch of screen shots of the new game have surfaced at Game Watch Japan. Ridge Racer 2 is scheduled to hit Japan on September 14, with a suggested price of 5,040 Yen. No US dates or prices have been announced yet, but the release should be considered a lock.

The sequel will include more cars, more music, and more tracks. Eight new car models have been confirmed in addition to the 54 in the original. Eighteen courses will be pulled from previous games to help bring the track total to 42, including reversed and mirrored instances. Of course, eight-player ad hoc wireless racing will still be possible, and gamers should expect new race modes.

ScummVMIt’s been a good week for retro game fanatics with PSPs! Earlier, we reported on news from SEGA that they’ll be releasing a compilation of 28 of the best Genesis games for the PSP. And now, MaxConsole is reporting that a new build of ScummVM (which allows you to play games made with Lucasarts’ SCUMM engine) is available for the PSP. This will allow you to play a ton of those classic Lucasarts games you loved back in the day - think Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Loom, etc. Support has also been added for the The Legend of Kyrandia games, which were developed by Westwood Studios but also used the SCUMM engine.

For those of you interested in a bit of a history lesson, SCUMM stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion and (surprisingly enough) was created during the development of Maniac Mansion for the Commodore-64 (released in 1987). It saw various iterations and was used by Lucasarts up until 1997 on The Curse of Monkey Island.
