Alibi Network Makes Excuses For You
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, Transportation,
You are going out of town with plans to meet someone and you would rather your spouse/partner didn’t find out. First of all, shame on you. If you absolutely must, the Alibi Network can assist you with complete anonymity and confidentiality. They can set up your rendezvous either locally or a distant destination, and will include transportation, hotel accommodations, and/or other recreation. At the same time they will cover you with an excuse so that no one will be the wiser.
For example, they can furnish you with a certificate of completion at a business symposium, when in fact you are hanging out with one of your co-workers ordering room service and watching HBO. We prefer to think that most people will use this service to plan a surprise party or escape from a family reunion, but suspect that most of them are more on the not wanting-to-get-caught list.

CBS Expands Online Distribution
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Internet,
CBS has been very busy of late. You can already view videocasts on Yahoo, Apple iTunes, and their own website. They have now decided to expand their online distribution service with such shows as all the “CSIs,” “Survivor”, “CSTV”, and “Sportsline” on Joost, MSN, Time Warner’s AOL, CNET, and several other simulcasting sites.
The network sees this move as a way to combat unauthorized viewing on sites such as YouTube. Advertising revenue earned will be shared among CBS and its partners. We see it as a method of catching up with the shows that we just can’t stay awake to watch anymore, such as “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

Online Poll Reveals Top Ten Road Rage Tracks
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Handhelds, Internet, Transportation, Video Games, Videos,
In order to promote the launch of their new video game “Burnout Dominator,” Electronic Arts has teamed up with AOL to offer an online poll asking what music gives people road rage. At present, over 1,700 voters have responded with tracks such as Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” Meatloaf’s “Bat out of Hell,” and Feeder’s “Buck Rogers.” The game is available for PS2 and PSP for $39.99. We don’t know why the Hoff’s “Jump In My Car” didn’t make the top ten because, quite frankly, that pushes us over the edge.

YouTube Features Face-Off for Political Candidates
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Editorial, Internet, Videos,
It seems that televised “Meet the Candidates” programs are getting a jump start on YouTube, which will be airing videos posted by the candidates on their News and Politics site. Others can watch the vlogs and add their own video opinions and comments.
“Interactivity is what really fuels the engine on YouTube and candidates and users were striving for ways to communicate with each other,” said Steve Grove, head of news and politics.
The idea comes from the site’s “You Choose ‘08” initiative that began in Febuary to allow the candidates to strut their stuff. First up is Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who yesterday responded to the issue “What do you believe is America’s single greatest challenge and what would you do to address it?” It seems to us that the candidate, in a typically political move, managed to turn the tables by responding to the question with another question.

Judge Finds Ex Bashing Site Out of Jurisdiction
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech,
Last June, Pennsylvanian Todd Hollis filed a suit against Floridian Tasha Cunningham and her site DontDateHimGirl because he said it posted negative comments about him without proper fact checking. He is also suing other posters that he claims commented on his sexuality and ability to pay child support. Allegheny County Judge R. Wettick Jr. said that he had no jurisdiction because Ms. Cunningham resides in another state.
The site has tripled in size to 27,000 profiles since the lawsuit has was filed. Cunningham calls it “a new cost-effective weapon in the war on cheating men.” We call it airing your dirty laundry and will keep our eye on the subject to see if public man-bashing will be outlawed in a higher court in the weeks to come.

My Google is Better Than Your Google
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Google, Internet, Misc. Tech,

Have you ever Googled an individual company to find out if they are reputable? For that matter, have you ever Googled yourself or your spouse/partner just to see who gets the most results? It turns out that nowadays people are using the search engine on prospective dates to help fill in some of blanks before they meet. Katie Laird, a 24-year-old Web marketing professional, tells her friends to “use the power of Google to their advantage.”
Try it, if you have not before. You can often find blogs, resumes, e-mail and address listings, or hidden fetishes listed on MySpace. Just remember the wise words of Ms. Laird, “Don’t Google what you can’t handle.”

If you want to explore the inner you, SimilarMinds offers free personality tests. They have recently added new ones and rearranged their site to include a forum, so that you can contact others who match your type. Included in their collection are left and right brain, Enneagrams, Jung, word association, and compatibility tests. They also feature an Oracle as a decision making tool. We took a couple of the tests and discovered quirks that we already knew existed, but had chosen to overlook. Perhaps the Oracle can forsee that it is still okay that some of us will always be type-A personalities.

Google Earth Maps War Torn Darfur
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Google, Internet, Misc. Tech, Software,
Having reported on Google’s being criticized for its mapping coverage after Katrina, we now see that they may be making up for their faux pas. The site, teamed with U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, will help call attention to the deplorable conditions in Darfur by mapping high-res satellite images of the area.
The UN estimates that more than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced in the last four years. Google is utilizing tent icons to mark refugee camps and flame icons to represent villages that have been destroyed. Click on one of the flames and you get the village’s name and statistics about its devastation. Our kudos to Google Earth for working to uncover a problem that others keep trying to overlook.

Anna Nicole Self-Portrait (?) Available on eBay
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Hot Deals, Internet,
Our eBay pick of the week has to be an Anna Nicole signed, original self-portrait. The description states that the painting was done by the model between 2002 and 2003 and features her signature. The ongoing auction will close April 15. Its posting states, “This is a rare opportunity to own something so personal from Anna Nicole Smith!” The seller is hoping to make $1,700,000.00 out of the sale. Considering that the image portrayed could be almost anyone and isn’t even a blonde, we were not surprised that there are no bids as yet.
