Video: Apple TV OS ported to iPod touch

So, now we know that the new Apple TV runs iOS, which is what we expected. What we didn’t expect was that you’d be able to run the Apple TV version of iOS 4.1 on an iPod touch. The software that runs on the Apple TV is called Lowtide, and looks to operate just fine on the iPod, save for some screen real estate issues.

Today RIM (Research in Motion) finally introduced the world to the BlackBerry Playbook. The Playbook is a 7-inch tablet that RIM hopes will be a healthy competitor to the Apple iPad, and runs its own custom version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS.
The insides of this thing sound pretty good as well, and almost put the iPad to shame: a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, front and rear facing cameras that both support high definition, Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration, HDMI out, USB, and HTML5 support. It’s got a widescreen 1024 x 600 display that supports multi-touch, and RIM was proud to announce that the Playbook will connect with BlackBerry enterprise servers right out of the box. Now, on paper this thing sounds powerful, but it’s really going to be the UI and user experience in software that will make or break this thing.
RIM says that the Playbook isn’t just for business, and that its OpenGL support is perfect for gaming. It also has e-reader capabilities, and a full web browser, as previously mentioned. Expect the BlackBerry App World to make an appearance here as well, along with in-app purchase integration that developers will be able to tap in to. RIM also says that the BlackBerry Playbook will be offerred in 3G and 4G models in the future.

White iPhone 4 vs. black iPhone 4 comparison

A few days ago we hit you with our white iPhone 4 hands-on gallery, giving you an up-close look at the device as it stands on its own. Today we’ve put together a gallery showing the yet-to-be-released white iPhone 4 next to the currently available black model. Go ahead and look through the images to see not just the obvious differences (you know…the white front and back of the device,) but also the more subtle ones. Things like the dock connector and headphone jack are also white, unlike what you’d find on the black model.

The white iPhone 4. Delayed multiple times, with current understanding that it will be available from Apple to the general public sometime before the end of the year, this is one of the most curious Apple delays in history. We’ve got our hands on a white iPhone 4 model—they aren’t non-existent by any means. In fact, a bunch of employees at Apple have them and use them as their primary device, and the factories over in Asia are pumping out the parts for these phones in order to perfect the white model to get it ready for the launch this fall.
We will be getting into a bit more about what’s holding up the white version of the iPhone 4 in just a bit, and we’ll also let you know how you can get your own. In our opinion, the white model is just gorgeous, but there are one or two things Apple will wanna fix before releasing them to the masses. For now, take a look at our white iPhone 4 hands-on gallery. One interesting note, it’s not just the front and back glass that are white—the dock connector is also white, as is the inside of the headphone jack.

iPad comes to Target on October 3

If you’ve wanted to pick up an iPad but haven’t gotten around to it yet, you’ll have another option as far as purchasing location in a little over a week, as Target stores will start selling the Apple tablet on October 3 in both the WiFi and 3G flavors. Even better, if you’ve got a Target credit card, they’ll be having a 5% off special for the iPad beginning October 17th. The holiday season is upon us.

iOS 4.2 beta for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch now available

Hey, so you know that iOS 4.2 software update that’ll bring multitasking, folders, printing, and a bunch more 4.0 features to the iPad? Well, if you’re a developer, you can download the iOS 4.2 beta right this second. You can install it on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Just know that printing currently requires a specific HP printer, or a pre-release version of Mac OS X 10.6.5…but we’re sure you don’t care about all that, and you just wanna get your hands on the update. If you aren’t in the iPhone Developer program, you better find a friend who is!

Windows Phone 7 trailer gets Lawrence of Arabia treatment

Ahhhhh snap! Microsoft is officially bringing “it” by touting the Windows Phone 7 as the next revolution in smartphones. Introduced with a cinematic touch by utilizing Lawrence of Arabia themed teaser trailer, Windows Phone 7 rides blurringly from out of the distance into the forefront. Okay, we’re a bit too enthusiastic, but something about Xbox Live on our phones makes us get all giddy inside!

EXOGEAR Exolife iPhone 4 battery case review

Since the iPhone 4 form factor was such a radical redesign from the iPhone 3GS, one annoyance was that cases fitted for the previous device simply don’t fit the new one. Makes sense, but for us that meant parting with our Mophie Juice Pack, which we’ve been rocking for a couple of years. The great thing about it is that it’s basically a case that doubles the power of your iPhone, and it’s indispensable when you are out on the road or traveling. Mophie’s been saying that an iPhone 4 case is coming soon, but they’ve been scant on details, and it looks like a company called EXOGEAR has beat them to the punch with the Exolife iPhone 4 Rechargeable Battery Case. We’ve been using it for a while, and have our thoughts for you after the jump.

Apple says iPod touch outsells Sony and Nintendo combined. What?

Looks as if Apple is gunning for a spot in the gaming realm, or rather has already sliced out their piece of the pie. Sony previously attacked Apple during a PSP commercial where “Marcus” told a kid playing games on an iPhone that it was made for “texting your grandmother” and not for “big boy” games. Steve Jobs retaliated earlier today at the company fall music event by revealing that both Nintendo and Sony’s portable systems are under the sales of the iPod touch alone, and that over 1.5 billion “games and entertainment” apps have been downloaded, big boy games or not.
However, the Nintendo DS reportedly sold 132 million units world wide, while Apple is tracked at 120 million iOS units sold according to their July report. Is Apple trying to pull the wool over gamers eyes, or do they really have the numbers to back up their bold claim? We’re looking into it, as a bit of clarification seems to be in order.

iOS 4.1 update brings HDR photos, HD video uploads, and plenty of bug fixes

Apple just announced this morning at their fall music event that they’re shipping iOS 4.1, which aims to fix a lot of bugs in the iOS 4 platform, while also bringing new features. Here’s a rundown:
- Bug fixes: Proximity sensor, Bluetooth, iPhone 3G performance
- High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos
- High definition video upload over Wi-Fi
- TV Show rentals
- Game Center
iOS 4.1 ships next week for iPhone and , and it will be free for both.
