Catch me on Windows Phone Radio!
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Microsoft, Software,

Windows Phone 7 launches on November 8 here in the US, and in just three days over in Europe. I got a chance to sit in (okay, I kinda took it over) on Windows Phone Radio a couple days ago to talk to Brian Seitz and Matt Akers about what we can all expect from the launch, from the software, and from the hardware devices that we will see launching. We chat about Zune, Xbox Live on the devices, and also what it took to bring a bunch of Microsoft divisions together to collaborate on this operating system. It's all good stuff, and if you're interested in WIndows Phone 7 or mobile devices in general, give it a listen.
I'm gonna try and make semi-regular appearances on the show, so if there are any questions you have, feel free to send them my way!

iPad coming to Verizon and ATT on October 28
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Handhelds,

Not to be outdone by Amazon, Target, and Walmart selling the iPad, Verizon Wireless and AT&T brick-and-mortar locations will begin selling the Apple tablet beginning October 28. This marks the first time that Verizon is carrying an iOS device to date, and likely fuels speculation that the iPhone is coming to VZW in early 2011. They'll be bundling the iPads with their MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, with pricing set at $630, $730, and $830 for the 16, 32, and 64GB models respectively. Users will get 1GB of monthly data allowance for $20, contract-free. On the AT&T side of things, they'll be selling the WiFi + 3G model of the iPad, which connects to the AT&T 3G network, and users there will pay $15 for 200MB of data, or $25 for 2GB monthly, no contracts.

GreenPois0n iOS 4.1 jailbreak now available
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Mods / Hacks, Software,

After a short two-day delay, the GreenPois0n iOS 4.1 jailbreak tool is now available for download. Unfortunately, like Limera1n before it, it’s a Windows-only tool for now, and the OS X version should be available shortly. We used Limera1n to jailbreak an iPhone 4 a couple of days ago, and while it’s nice to have tools like SBSettings, and BiteSMS back in our lives, we’ve found that quite a few of the jailbreak apps that we know and love are in beta, pending a full release that is compatible with iOS 4.1. Still, we’re definitely happy to have our phones functioning the way we want them to, rather than the way Apple wants them to. GreenPois0n is free, and supports iPhone 4, iPad, iPhone 3GS, and the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch.

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News, Handhelds, Microsoft, Videos,
Yesterday Microsoft held a joint press conference with AT&T to launch Windows Phone 7. We’re sure you’ve probably read all about the news, but that’s never as good as taking in the information first-hand, is it? Well, now you can watch the press conference in its entirety, and we’ve embedded it above. It’s an hour long, so you may wanna grab a snack, but it’s definitely full of good info about what Microsoft plans on doing to try and win back their place in the mobile wars.

WIndows Phone 7 ad is brilliant, really
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Microsoft, Videos,
Microsoft finally unleashed all their Windows Phone 7 news today, which we will be sharing in a bit. They also put out their first Windows Phone 7 ad, and we’ve gotta say, we think it’s a good one. It got a chuckle or two out of us, and seems apropos for this day and age. Give it a look!

GreenPois0n iOS 4.1 jailbreak drops on October 10
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Mods / Hacks, Software,

If you’ve got an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4.1 and you’ve been itching to get that jailbreak goodness back, it looks like you’ll have your wish in under three days. The Chronic Dev Team has just confirmed that their SHAtter-based GreenPois0n jailbreak tool, which is compatible with all iOS devices, will be released to the world on October 10, 2010 at 10:10:10AM GMT—see, that’s 10/10/10 10:10:10.
GreenPois0n is based on a low-level exploit which can be used to jailbreak all currently available iOS devices permanently. In order for Apple to block GreenPois0n, they’d only be able to do it on new, revised hardware.

WSJ: Verizon iPhone coming early 2011
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is readying plans to mass produce a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the phone early next year. They say their sources are “people briefed by Apple,” and we know that we’ve all gone over this rumor numerous times over the past couple of years, but it seems that 2011 marks the end of the AT&T exclusivity on the iPhone in the US, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit Verizon in the first quarter of 2011.
In other news, WSJ reports that Apple is already hard at work on the iPhone 5. Of course, with it expected to launch in just 8 months, that really isn’t news at all.

Data acquired by Nielsen in this graph shows the past 8 months of Android‘s steady rise to the top as the most popular OS. While iOS took a major dive around June, and BlackBerry OS continuing to swerve in both directions like a drunk behind the wheel. This puts Android at 32% of new phone purchases, with Apple and BlackBerry closely tailing each other at 25% and 26% respectively. Though, RIM still remains in the overall lead, boasting the most users of their OS in the US market.

Amazon and Target now selling iPad
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Handhelds,
Both Amazon and Target are now selling the iPad, just in time for the holiday season. We’d previously mentioned that Target would get the iPad in October, but having major online retailer Amazon on board as well just gives more choice for the purchasing of the product—especially since most customers will be able to get it tax-free, along with free shipping for Amazon Prime customers. You can check out the iPad on Amazon now.

HP exec Todd Bradley refers to webOS tablet as PalmPad
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Handhelds, Rumors,

The webOS tablet slated for release in early 2011 hasn’t been given an official name, though an HP patent for ‘PalmPad’ led many to refer to it as such. Even HP’s Todd Bradley let this name slip during an Analyst Meeting.
“We’ve already announced the expansion of our future product portfolio well beyond smartphones. We’ll have a webOS-powered PalmPad that will be set for release early in 2011,” stated Bradley during the conference.
Whether or not Bradley let the official name slip or is just speaking in the vernacular is unclear; but PalmPad is a decent name that people are getting used to, so hopefully they don’t go a completely different route à la Ninendo’s Wii.
