ASUS P565

announced that they would soon be releasing a smartphone with a touch interface and a whopping 800MHz of processing goodness.  ASUS is featuring a new touch interface they have named “Glide,” which overlays the operating system.  The P565 features not only speed, but a 2.8-inch VGA touch screen with a resolution of 480 x 640.  The face is what you would expect for a touchscreen device, but what you cannot see is the leather that lines the back of the device, clearly aiming it for a business environment.  The P565 incorporates Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, GPS, 256MB of flash, with 128MB DDR SDRAM, an SD slot, Blutooth, a 3 megapixel camera, and supports HSDPA 3.6Mbps, UMTS 2100, EDGE/GPRS/GSM 900/1800/1900, Class 10.  No word yet on price or when it will launch, but it certainly should be a very capable device once it comes to market.

He may soon be the 44th President of the United States, but security concerns and record-keeping laws mean that is unlikely to become the first e-mailing president.

When the President-elect is sworn in 64 days from now, we expect that his advisers will insist that he hand over his favorite little gadget, his BlackBerry. Not only are there serious concerns about e-mail security (if it’s connected to the internet, it can be hacked), he also faces the Presidential Records Act, which means that all correspondence must be put in the official record and is ultimately subject to public review and possible subpoenas. Although he could, theoretically, craft an Executive Order allowing BlackBerry use — or e-mail in general — there are plenty of aides who can deal with electronic communication for him, likely making presidential BlackBerry use unnecessary.

Obama is, however, sending a clear signal that he is venturing into new, uncharted territory; for the first time, the weekly Democratic radio address has been released as a web video on YouTube (up top) — it will also continue to air on the radio and the President-elect plans to publish these weekly updates through the transition and then from the White House. We’re hoping this will encourage more Americans to take an active, well-informed role in the political process — and rumor has it that in those future presidential videos there will be one previously absent device gracing the historic presidential desk: a laptop computer. Only time will tell.

MS OfficeMicrosoft is planning a web-based version of their Office suite, which will include full versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. As long as you have a Firefox, IE or Safari browser, you can access it from anywhere. The company has not given an official public release date, but you can probably expect it in late 2009. This should give iPhone and other handheld addicts another source of happiness since they have even more reason now to use them more than their computers.

Wireless WipesI still remember the first time I went to the Apple Store to check out the then new iPhone and iPod touch; although I was impressed by the slick new touchscreen, I was horrified and disgusted by the visible filth from curious hands, and being the germophobe I am, I asked the sales associate to clean the Gerber Baby goo off of the screen.

Enter Wireless Wipes – the first portable sanitizer pack designed specifically to clean mobile phones, PDA’s and laptop computer screens. Though these little cleansing cloths won’t do anything for your phone’s internal bugs, they will wipe out the bugs living on the outside – you know, the kind that’ll get you sick. A 2006 U.K. study found that our little electronic devices carry tens of thousands of bacteria, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA, a type of antibiotic resistant bacteria that can be deadly if ingested. In another study, an Arizona microbiologist tested 25 random mobile phones and found the staph bug growing on nearly half of them! Staph, in case you didn’t know, causes everything from pimples and boils, to pneumonia and meningitis – ailments most of us try to avoid.

Wireless Wipes cost $2 for a resealable 10-pack, which is certainly more than you’d pay for most cleaning wipes, but what sets these wipes apart is that they are fast drying, non-streaking and most importantly, non-corrosive. Or you could just keep putting that Petri dish of a phone up to your face. I’m not here to judge…

Cell PhonesWhat to do with those outdated electronics? If you don’t want to sell them yourself on eBay or craig’s list, send your old working cell phones, MP3 players, laptops, GPS systems or other electronics to Gazelle. Evaluate the condition of your device online and they will give you an estimate. They will even pay for shipping by sending you a postage-free box. The entire process takes about a week after they receive the item. The company claims their average payment is $115.00, a great way to make some extra holiday cash.

Pico Projector

If you’re tired of watching movies on your iPod’s tiny screen you may be excited by this innovation: the Optoma Pico Projector is a pocket-sized projector which runs on batteries and can project images and videos from a variety of sources like iPod, iPhone, digital cameras, cellphones and DVD players with 480x320 resolution and a maximum screen size of 65 inches at 8.5 feet. It uses a non-replaceable 20,000 hour LED lamp and a DLP chip from Texas Instruments. The battery lasts for 90 minutes and can be recharged through USB or with its own power cord. The device weighs four ounces and comes with a built-in speaker which is practically useless – its primary flaw. If you want one, it goes on sale in two weeks and will cost $430, which should clear up some space in your pocket.
