Titanic-DNA Literally Marks Histoy

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,

Geneva designer Romain Jerome has designed a line of watches for Basel that are actually fragments of time. He gained access to a 3 lb. section of the Titanic hull from an anonymous donor and has taken pieces from it to create what he calls the “essence” of the sunken oceanliner. The hands are inspired by its anchor and the black dial is colored from the coal from the shipwreck.
“So many rich people buy incredibly complicated watches without understanding how they work, because they want a story to tell,” Basel chief executive Yvan Arpa said. “To them we offer a story.”
Basel is selling the the line for the incredible price of between $7,800.00 and $173,100.00. They will be in a limited edition of 2,012 to commemorate the centenary anniversity of the Titanic’s sinking. We think we will just keep our old Timex wristwatches that miraculously just keep on ticking, even when wet.

Conquer Friday 13th With Good Luck Voodoo Doll

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech,
We find Friday the 13th to be our lucky day, but if you don’t agree, adopt a Bat Boy Voodoo Doll for a little extra protection. The 3 x 2 x 2-inch gadget works best at night, when you probably need a little extra safekeeping from things that go bump. Prezzybox also carries other models of the impish dolls, including the Little Helper, the Voodoo Princess, and the ever-popular Magnetic Twins, for those instances when your bad luck extends to a loved one. The good luck talisman carries a MSRP of only £4.95 (~$10.00.)

iRobot Verro Replaces Pool Boy

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,
iRobot, creator of the Roomba, has decided to tackle the issue of getting our swimming pools clean and sparkling fresh in only 60 to 90 minutes, as opposed to the 4 to 6 hours cleaners normally take. The 4-wheeled Verro 300 sprays jets of water to clean cement pools, while the 600 works on a track for cleaning tile, vinyl, and fiberglass.
Designed by Aqua Products Group, the iRobit offerings are two next-generation models of the Aquabot. The Verro 300 retails for $799.99 while the 600 will set you back $1,199.99. Contact iRobot to take advantage of their 30-day free trial. We were thinking that we would give the Verro a crack at our shower, which could always use a super-scrubbing.

Scientists in the world’s largest particle physics laboratory CERN have developed what is probably our planet’s coldest refrigerator. The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) recently reached -455.8º F (-271ºC,) a temperature that is colder than space.
The device was designed to combine sub-atomic particles to create miniature black holes. Using liquid helium, the LHC uses magnets to guide two beams of protons around a track, causing a collision. The super-cold temperature is needed to allow that current to flow without resistance.
CERN has received some criticism that their mini-black hole could destroy Earth, but experts have stated that the chance of that occuring are “totally miniscule.” We just breathed a sigh of relief at reading that comment as we are not yet ready to reach space by being involuntarily sucked into it.

It may be a little too late for us this Easter, but this robot Dream Chick will keep until next year. The bot, unveiled by Sega Toys, fits in your palm and makes cheeping noises, then moves its wings when you give it a friendly pat. At a size of 65 × 60 × 95 mm and powered by batteries, this can be a great companion for many pre-existing and mostly useless robo-pets, such as Sega’s dogs, cats, and ponies, who could surely use a furry friend when their owners tire of listening to their endless chattering. They will be available through Sega Toys for 2,310 Yen (~$19.00.)

GFS Captures Attention of U.S. Military

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science, Transportation,

Want the American military to notice your particular talents? You can always use the method of former hovercraft engineer Geoff Hatton. He designed and patented a flying saucer from his workshop in the UK. Dubbed GFS (Geoff’s Flying Saucer), it is powered by an electrically driven propeller that pushes air over its outer surface and features controllable flaps. Although the Ministry of Defense passed on the saucer, which was partially funded by a grant from the Department of Trade and Industry five years ago, the American military believes that it has potential.
“It’s a unique approach which lends itself to a surveillance platform,” said Sal Gomez, of the US Army’s International Co-operative Programs center. “It could be useful in urban areas because if it bumped into walls it could recover.”
We think that it won’t be long before UFO sightings will be the real thing, albeit in a slightly smaller size.

Anna Nicole Self-Portrait (?) Available on eBay

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Hot Deals, Internet,
Our eBay pick of the week has to be an Anna Nicole signed, original self-portrait. The description states that the painting was done by the model between 2002 and 2003 and features her signature. The ongoing auction will close April 15. Its posting states, “This is a rare opportunity to own something so personal from Anna Nicole Smith!” The seller is hoping to make $1,700,000.00 out of the sale. Considering that the image portrayed could be almost anyone and isn’t even a blonde, we were not surprised that there are no bids as yet.

eShopAfrica Builds Coffins and Mens’ Character

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech,

Coffin builders are more than just carpenters in Accra, Ghana. This one was designed by Samuel, who originally was an apprentice working off his tuition fees. Today he has his own business based on commissions from eShopAfrica.
Traditional GA culture claims that you should be buried in a coffin that reflects how you lived your life and earned your living. The fair trade company allows you to order anything you like based solely on a photo or model. We can think of plenty of subjects that would feel right at home in this Nokia mock-up.

Ferris Students Win Annual RGMC Award

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science, Toys,

What do engineering students do in their spare time? During the spring they are gearing up for the annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest at Purdue, which took place last weekend. This year’s problem to solve was to peel an orange, juice it, and pour at least one teaspoon’s worth into a cup. Further rules stated that a minimum of 20 steps must be used and the gadgets must be limited by 5 x 6 x 6-ft. with no explosives, fire, or live animals.
The winning team from Ferris State University managed to stretch the process to 345 steps, breaking Purdue’s previous record of 125 steps. It began with a bell ringing which triggered a line of toy cars that traveled down a chute and up a Jacob’s ladder, causing dominoes to fall and start a train. The vehicle went down a track, causing a hobby horse to drop. After several more steps, a mixture of Diet Coke and Mentos exploded, hit a target, and the orange was squeezed and poured. We didn’t believe it either until we found the video that captured the event. Way to go, Bulldogs.
