Ice Cream Game Pirate

William Agnew from South Lanarkshire was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court after admitting to the offences. 4,000 DVDs, CDs and games (PlayStation, Xbox and PC) were seized during a raid on the man’s business premises. The goods, if sold new, are estimated to be worth in the region of £100,000.

Selling pirated material from his ice cream truck? At least you can’t blame the guy for not being creative - I wouldn’t be surprised if we soon discover he plays a lot of the Twisted Metal games.

Activision Profits More bad news for the industry. Activision has reported that net income fell 30% for the holiday quarter despite record revenue. As we’ve reported, game sales were down for the end of the year because a lot of gamers decided to hold back on purchases so that they’d be able to afford a next-generation machine once it comes out or becomes available. Of course, this slump isn’t a new thing by any means, as this transition period is part of what defines our industry.

Football Manager 2006An upcoming SEGA title, Football Manager 2006, will require the 360 HDD to play. If you take a look at the link, you’ll notice that the game is actually European football - soccer to those of us stateside. So while it looks like the title isn’t official for the U.S. market, I’d still expect it to come out here. At any rate, the HDD-required goes against what Microsoft previously said when the company announced it’s dual SKU strategy. If you can recall, Microsoft explicitly said that you wouldn’t need a hard drive to play any games. Whoops.

Dreamcast Xbox Live ArcadeAccording to a Microsoft insider, you can expect to see upwards of 50 Dreamcast games show up on XBLA within the next couple years. The insider also suggests that a group of games will be released at a time and will retail for $10 each.

While this is just a rumor, we’re buying it. It makes a lot of sense, and we could definitely picture Microsoft and SEGA working something out. Now we’re just waiting for Crazy Taxi…

Nice PC you just bought there, skippy.  I’m sure that you won’t mind paying for “protection” right?  Oh - you mean you don’t want to pay?  That’s until Gweedo and Uncle Bill come knocking on your door and carrying a baseball bat while demanding that $50 to “protect” your PC from the “bad guys” on the Internet.  That’s pretty much Microshaft’s stance on protecting your PC.  You see, apparently it isn’t enough that you bought Windows, you also have to PAY for the priviledge of securing what Microsoft should have done to begin with.  It’s the good ol’ Microsoft way of securing their bottom line you see.

Starting this June, Microsoft will begin to offer it’s paid security services.  They will now be competing against the likes of companies like Symantec and McAfeee, you know, those little software companies.  Hey, if MSFT can take their money, why not right?  Who needs 3rd party developers anyway?

OS X Leopard

We have had quite a few people send this in to us this afternoon, hoping that it was a screenshot of OS X Leopard. Nice try, but this is just a skinned version of Tiger. Still, there are some subtle changes in the screenshot that we like - namely, the orange and white iSync logo and the “burnt aqua” GUI, signaling an even further (or complete) departure from brushed metal. The subtle Finder changes are fine as well, but with Spotlight, we see direct Finder usage continually dropping. In the meantime, if you want to make your Mac look similar, go ahead and use the UNO Gui, linked below.

1GB iPod Nano

Apple has just added a new iPod nano to their lineup, available with 1 GB of memory. This one can hold 240 songs and sports the same specs as its siblings. Could this mean that the shuffle will meet its end soon? All it means for now, is that the iPod is becoming more and more affordable. You can pick one up for $149 at the Apple store or if you’re a student or educational faculty, you can get it at the discounted price of $129 from the Apple Education Store.

Fiber OpticFiber optics, in their various forms, are everywhere these days. From communications cabling to fabric materials, children’s toys to lighting and custom home theater ceilings with star fields, the proliferation of the product can be a bit overwhelming. Leave it to Fiberoptic Floors, Inc. to find a way to install fiber optics in your tile floor. They utilize a waterjet process to drill holes into ceramic tile and a halogen or LED-based light source for powering the fiber. Mac mini NOC

For those of us on a Mac Mini computing budget with Xserve level taste, if you want to make your own Network Operations Center at a fraction of the cost, you should check out the how-to guide on MetaSkills. Ken does a great job detailing the steps he took to create his own homebrew ghetto-style version of a NOC for his home computing pleasure.  Beware though, this guide does get into a little bit of high-level network admin stuff, so it’s not for the uninitiated.  If you want to set up a killer little rig at home, and on a budget, this is a great read.
