“Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine” is a cockroach-controlled mobile robot system. The system uses a living Madagascan hissing cockroach atop a modified trackball to control the three-wheeled robot. Infrared sensors also provide navigation feedback to create a semi-intelligent system, with the cockroach as the CPU.

I sometimes wonder why I can’t come up with gimmicky-yet-functional gadget ideas that might make me rich. Probably my lack of creativity coupled with the fact that I have no desire to do an actual work. I digress. Anyways, check out the Power Strip Liberator. All it really amounts to is a one foot extension cable. The allure here is that you can plug in all of your huge power blocks into any surge protector without having to shuffle around to make room. These things are only $1.79. Genius.

Now this is great. Instead of playing with light sabers, talk with light sticks. This little device scans your highly creative and artistic doodles and displays them in the air for your friends (or anyone around) to see and enjoy. Simply doodle, scan, shake and share. Repeat the steps as needed. Would be pretty sweet to do at a sporting event to talk some smack to the opposing team, however, I’m not sure if they’ll be able to read it from large distances. At $39.99, I’ll let someone else try it out and report back to see how well that works.

Everyone we know has been thoroughly impressed with the way that iRobot’s Roomba vacuum cleaners work. Now, the company forays even deeper into robotic home cleaning with their new mop. The Scooba functions in a similar fashion as the Roomba, with a few key differences. The way it works is the Scooba will vacuum up the floor, spray foam scrub onto the tile or other surface, scrub it up, then dry the floor. There is no price set yet and it’s looking like it might only be a limited time deal around the holidays.

In an interesting turn of events, it looks like Michael Jackson may have sold his Neverland Ranch to a silent buyer for about $35 million. I remember as a child wshing I could visit the Ranch - after all, it had its own zoo, amusement park, trolley, etc. Looking back, I think it’s safe to say that it is good that I was never able to make the trip. This is one example of technology gone bad.

We spoke with Kingston Technology earlier this evening at eFocus, where they were giving the details on their Secure Digital Card product line addition. The new Ultimate SD cards will ship at 512 MB and 1 GB capacities to start, but I am sure a 2 GB version isn’t too far away. The new SD Ultimate cards offer significant performance benefits over the current Standard and Elite Pro lines of SD cards, including 133X transfer rates of larger size files. This is great for the rapid shooting demands of professional digital photography.
“Kingston developed the SD Ultimate line to give pro users and serious digital enthusiasts a greater array of choices for their digital media,” said Mike Kuppinger, senior product manager, Kingston. “Our SD Ultimate cards provide superb performance to help users optimize their high-end digital equipment—whether it’s a digital camera, MP3 player or PDA,” continued Kuppinger.
The 512 MB cards will retail for $72 USD, whereas the 1 GB flavor will go for $164 USD. Kingston confirmed that the Ultimate SD Card line will soon be followed by an Ultimate Compact Flash card line with similar speed increases.
New Airport Screening Machine Will Have You Bare It All

With Airport screening at an all time high, the TSA is looking at implementing a new type of screening technology called “backscatter,” to make it easier for the Screening Agents to locate any dangerous hidden weapons. Great Idea you say? Well, the downside to this technology is that as you are screened by this great invention you are practically being eyed up by the agents. Yes, this controversial technology not only makes it easy to find hidden objects you might have, it makes it so the agents can see through ALL of your clothes. The TSA plans to deploy this technology in several airports, but are not saying where and when. Some say this is an invasion of personal privacy and I agree. What do you all think?
