Ryan Gosling Frustrated Over Censorship

Blue Valentine posterRyan Gosling was "frustrated" when film censors tried to ban his Blue Valentine sex scene. The 30-year-old actor, whose latest movie had its NC-17 rating in America reduced to R following an appeal, worries that people won't enjoy his work if younger audiences are banned from seeing it.

"The process is frustrating. They don't tell you why, there's no debate, you just get told the scene you have to cut. And if you get that rating it means you can't air on TV, you can't have ads in newspapers and you can't screen anywhere but in big cities with arthouse theatres. We weren't saying kids under 17 should be able to see the film, but getting that rating effectively means nobody can see your film," he said, speaking about the ratings system.

The scene that caused the controversy shows Ryan's character engaging in oral sex with Michelle Williams' - but he argues that it is not gratuitous but vital to the film, so people can see the "consequences" of unprotected sex. "Michelle's character has casual sex, gets pregnant and ends up having the kid. It affects the rest of her life. It stops her going to med school. The idea that parents wouldn't want kids to see the ramifications and consequences of sex seems strange to me. The film isn't glorifying anything, it demystifies things."

2011 Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

The King's Speech

Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Blair Underwood helped kick off the 2010-11 awards season Tuesday morning by formally announcing the latest round of Golden Globe contenders.

In the film category, The King's Speech -- starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush -- lead all nominees with a total of six nods. (The Fighter and The Social Network tied for second with six each.)

Although the Academy Awards will not necessarily mirror the choices made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, there were some notable inclusions/omissions in this year's list of Globe nominees:

  • Justin Timberlake did not earn an acting nomination for The Social Network.
  • Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp were both recognized for their work in The Tourist, a movie that has been panned by critics. (BTW - they were nominated in the "Comedy" category.)
  • Speaking of Depp, he will be running against himself. (He was also nominated for Alice in Wonderland.)
  • Wall Street's Michael Douglas has now received another Golden Globe nod for his role as Gordon Gekko. (He won for Best Actor in 1987.)
  • Gwyneth Paltrow did not earn a nomination for her role in Country Strong.
  • 127 Hours was left out of the Best Movie category -- so was True Grit. (The Coen Brothers western received zero nominations.)

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards -- hosted again by Ricky Gervais -- will air Jan. 16 on NBC.

(You can find the full list of nominees after the jump. Click here for the TV nominations.)

Blue Valentine Ditches NC-17 Rating

Although it looked like , starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, would have to find a home in theaters with an NC-17 rating – the film has now been stamped with the letter "R."

The movie about a couple and their failing relationship was initially given the more adult rating by the MPAA because of what the group deemed “explicit sexual content.” The Weinstein Co. – arguing that this film was no more excessive than other R-rated entries – vowed to appeal the decision.

“If [Piranha 3D] got an NC-17, I’d be the first going, ‘All right, we gotta cut some of that stuff,’” Harvey Weinstein said. “It’s ridiculous -- a penis got coughed up in the movie by a piranha!" (NOTE: That film was rated R.) "They don't give [NC-17's] for violence, they give them for sexuality," Gosling added to E! back in November.

“As a kid I decided that a Canadian accent doesn’t sound tough. I thought guys should sound like . So now I have a phony accent that I can’t shake, so it’s not phony anymore. I’m going for the Madonna thing, the Lady Gaga thing—a phony accent that becomes your trademark.”

Love Wants McAvoy, Not Pattinson, for Cobain Role

James McAvoyCourtney Love wants - not Robert Pattinson -  to play Kurt Cobain in the biopic of his musician’s life.

Cobain’s widow thinks the Scottish actor would be “great” for the role. If not McAvoy, then .

“Isn’t that so stupid, who would cast him? That’s just wrong, no offense,” Courtney said about the Pattinson rumors. “I watched the Twilight stuff very, very recently and I get it, it resonates with the teenage girl in me, I understand epic love of that nature; I write about it all the time. But isn’t that silly?”

The “Celebrity Skin” hitmaker told the Canadian Press she wants casting approval and a say on the script and hopes her producer pal Trudie Styler, Sting’s wife, will act as her “proxy” in making sure the movie is done “right.”

The rocker - who thinks it would be too painful to ever watch the film - claims she will scrap the project altogether if Moon producer Trudie declines to be involved.
