Johnny Depp and Tim Burton: Together Again

Sweeney Todd PosterOver the years, many actors have come and gone. Few have had the staying power of Johnny Depp, who continues to get high-profile roles and enjoys his pick of scripts. The raven-haired thespian has showcased his acting talents over the years with an array of somewhat odd roles, preferring darker-toned movies rather than lighthearted comedy. A long-standing director-actor relationship and Depp’s penchant for the unordinary makes him perfect for Tim Burton’s , an adaptation based on the successful Broadway play.

The movie, set in London more than one hundred years ago, features Depp as none other than Todd, a deranged barber bent on murderous revenge. DreamWorks and both lent studios to create this tale of cannibalism, revenge, death, and darkness.  By the way, it’s a musical.

Sweeney Todd hits theaters December 21.

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium

I saw the trailer and immediately dismissed this movie out of hand. Never mind that it has and Natalie Portman (a big star cast if ever there was one); this is a movie about a magic toy shop. HUH? Who actually got Hoffman and Portman to agree to this? Designed especially for kids and family, is about an inventor (Hoffman) and his manager’s (Portman) attempts to keep the shop open, despite intervention from an accountant ().

This one’s for the little tykes, people. Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium comes to theaters November 16.

Box Office Breakdown: The Rock Upsets The Heartbreak Kid

The Heartbreak Kid

Despite what you may have learned in school, + The Farrelly Brothers does not necessarily equal box office gold.

The team behind There’s Something About Mary took a backseat to last weekend’s winner:  The Game PlanThe Heartbreak Kid, a remake of the 1972 Neil Simon comedy, raked in only $14 million.  While Mary did open with a smaller gross back in 1998 ($13.7M), it’s doubtful this critically-panned movie will become another sleeper hit for the trio.  Thankfully co-star will have the upcoming Gone Baby Gone to wash this disappointment away.

The only other new entries into the Top 10 included the fantasy flick, The Seeker ($3.7M), and the J.Lo-produced dance film, Feel the Noise ($3.1M).  Meanwhile, the well-reviewed Michael Clayton pulled impressive numbers in limited release ($46,000 per screen).  Expect the vehicle to open wide this weekend.

Although no director, producer or star have yet been confirmed for the project, a target date has already been set for a Transformers sequel.  While and are expected to return, participation is currently up in the air.  An ongoing dispute between Spielberg’s and its parent company, , could unfortunately put a wrench in everyone’s plans.  But it’s hoped production can at least begin before a possible Actors Guild strike next year.

If all things go as planned, expect to see the film on June 26th…2009.

Will Rape Scene in ‘The Kite Runner’ Be Removed?

The Kite RunnerA best-selling novel’s film adaptation is now facing trouble only one month away from its theatrical release.  The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini (A Thousand Splendid Suns), tells the story of two friends who grew up together in Afghanistan.  In one important scene, Amir, does nothing to help his friend, Hassan, who is being raped.

Unfortunately, the family of the young boy who filmed this crucial plot point wants those frames left on the cutting room floor.  Rape is considered completely undignified and against Afghan culture.  If the movie is seen in their country, they worry they’ll be ostracized or harassed for making Afghans look poorly.  They don’t think people will be able to separate fact from fiction.  According to 12-year-old Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada, the actor who was paid $10,000 for the role, he was never given a script and would not have accepted the job had he known about the violent scene.  (Why he chose to shoot the scene anyway is not made clear.  The family admits they did find out about the rape several days before it was filmed.)

Kite’s producers, Bennett Walsh and Rebecca Yeldham, claim they’ve spoken to the family since the scene was filmed last year.  According to Walsh and Yeldham, they were given the greenlight provided the content was portrayed in a sensitive manner.  Conversely, Ahmad’s father asserts the producers told him the scene would be cut when they were confronted about it.  He also says the company has promised to ‘take care of the family’ if they became victims of any backlash.

At this point, the producers have not said whether the scene will stand.  Meanwhile, the Marc Forster film is scheduled for release on Nov. 2nd.

Bee Movie: A Honey of a Flick?

Bee MovieFormer NBC golden boy , who lives on in syndicated sitcom glory every single day, will celebrate the release of his project this fall. Seinfeld co-wrote the script and lent his voice talent to the film, alongside co-star . Dreamworks, the company famous for the franchise, is behind the Bee Movie – a regular bee-meets-girl kinda thing. The bee in Bee Movie is Barry B. Benson (Seinfeld), who meets and becomes pals with a human florist (Zellweger). The impressive trailers have featured everything from animated clips to funny one-liners delivered by Seinfeld (in a huge bee costume) and director , and the Dreamworks association is promising. Could Bee Movie be enough to propel Seinfeld back into the celebrity A-list? Animated bees are funny, right?
