Box Office Breakdown: Snow White Slays Competition

Is it Chris Hemsworth's amazing hair? Was it the aggressive marketing campaign? Is Kristen Stewart actually a box office draw? Whatever it was, something prompted movie-goers this weekend to spend their dollars towards Snow White and the Huntsman -- approximately $56.2 million of them.
Men in Black 3, therefore, was bumped down from its short-lived number one spot to number two with $29.3 million. Marvel's The Avengers dropped to number three with a decent $20.2 million. Battleship dipped down one spot to number four with $4.8 million while The Dictator rounded out the top five with $4.7 million.

Who says lightning can't strike thrice?
Although The Avengers had a good three weeks at the top of the box office, Will Screen's return to the big screen in Men in Black 3 took in $55 million, finally bumping the Marvel flick down to #2. The superheroes, however, didn't go down without a fight, taking in close to $37 million this Memorial Day weekend. Battleship sunk to #3 with $10.8 million while The Dictator fell to #4 with $9.6 million. Horror film The Chernobyl Diaries debuted at number five with $8 million.

Box Office Breakdown: Battleship Fails to Maneuver a Win

Nothing is quite like the force of The Avengers.
The superhero film took in $55 million this weekend, which was a 46% drop from last weekend, but it still managed to do more than double what Battleship's debut took in ($25.3 million). The Dictator also debuted this week, securing third place at the box office with $17.4 million. Dark Shadows dropped two spots to number 4 with $12.8 million while the new comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting debuted at number 5 with $10.5 million.

It seems like packing a film chock-full of A-listers is worth the money spent on them.
The Avengers -- unsurprisingly -- took number one at the box office this weekend, beating Avatar's record for best second weekend with $103.2 million. The latest Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaboration, Dark Shadows, opened at number two with $28.8 million while Think Like a Man dropped one spot to number three with $6.3 million. The Hunger Games was bumped down one spot to number four with $4.4 million while The Lucky One stayed put at number five with $4 million.

Johnny Depp Slams Modern Movie Vampires

Johnny Depp is not impressed with modern movie vampires.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor believes the portrayal of vampires on screen in recent years, in films such as Blade and The Twilight Saga has changed dramatically from the golden era of the 1940s and 1950s, so he chose a classic look for his vampire character in Dark Shadows.
"Over the years all these vampire movies have come out and nobody looks like a vampire anymore. I adored Dracula, from Bela Lugosi to Christopher Lee, Max Shreck in Nosferatu - all these wonderful horror films. So this was an opportunity for me to sort of go into what doesn't really exist so much anymore - that classic monster make-up."
Dark Shadows follows Johnny's vampire character Barnabas Collins as he has run ins with various monsters, and is based on a US sitcom which ran from 1966 to 1971, which the actor was a fan of.

Johnny Depp: Hollywood’s Newest Vampire

He’s played crazy, he’s played brilliant, he’s even played opposite Angelina Jolie -- and now, Johnny Depp is ready to make us fall in love with the vampire craze all over again.
Depp will star in Dark Shadows, a big screen version of the series that originally ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971.
In its time, Shadows was an unprecedented show that featured ghosts, witches, werewolves and many other supernatural elements, not to mention a revolving door of actors. The series hit its stride with the introduction of Barnabas Collins, a vampire played by Jonathon Frid.
Depp and longtime pal/director Tim Burton were both fans of the series. (Are you surprised?) Speaking of which, the duo will come back together for the flick. Burton plans to direct Depp in the role of Collins … just as soon as he’s finished playing a rum-soaked, bowlegged pirate for Disney.
