In a recent interview with the New York Post, writer/director explained the decision behind marrying characters Stanford Blatch (Willie Garson) and Anthony Marantino (Mario Cantone).

Michael admitted that the (surprising?) storyline had a lot to do with the current political climate. “For me, Sex and the City has always been about being current. Whatever’s happening in culture, or in NYC, we always try to funnel into the series. And what’s happening now is the topic of gay marriage,” King said. “And as people get older, they get married. There are two gay characters in the movie and it comes back to the topic of evolution again, what happens to these characters?”

But are Stanford and Anthony really meant to be together? How would King address critics who think the pairing is a bit forced? “[laughs] I say that people don’t know a lot of different couples then! My personal belief is that the tragic falling apart of Carrie’s wedding to Big brought them together. That moment of crisis united them. It’s fun, I mean, opposites attract!” he declared.

So what do you think of this coupling? Do you think the two were meant to be…or did you find a romance a bit hard to believe?

Get Carried away with on May 28.
