Remake News: Fantastic Voyage, Harvey and More

Fantastic Voyage: James Cameron will serve as producer, not director, in the remake of Fantastic Voyage, a 1960s science fiction film. The story, about a group of colleagues who miniaturize themselves and their submarine to save a dying scientist from the inside, will incorporate technology used on Avatar. Shane Salerno (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem) will handle the script.

In the Heights: Although Kenny Ortega (This Is It) thought it was “premature for him to commit to his next film,” it seems that decision only applied to Footloose. The director is now linked to In the Heights, a big screen version of the hit Broadway show. Lin-Manuel Miranda - the musical’s composer, writer and cast member - will also appear in and produce the feature.

The Nutcracker: Tired of shelling out big bucks to see The Nutcracker at the ballet? Well, you might get to experience the tale for the cost of a movie. A story idea by Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After) has The Nutcracker and the Mouse King envisioned as an action-adventure. New Line hopes the project will have Chronicles of Narnia-esque tone.

Harvey: Steven Spielberg has abandoned plans to update Harvey, a 1950 film about a man and his six-foot-tall invisible rabbit friend. Although it’s not known why the idea was scrapped, it’s believed a casting issue may have played a role. Tom Hanks reportedly had no interest in redoing a Jimmy Stewart classic while Robert Downey Jr. wanted changes to the script.
