A part of me wants the PS3 to “fail” while the rest of me wants the PS3 and associated components to succeed lol.
I am getting one regardless of the crazy price. Yeah, it’s justified, in theory, but doesn’t make me happy. I have a feeling second generation PS3 games will be incredible and that it will outshine the 360 later in it’s life.
I also hope that blu-ray does well and the PS3 will have a big role in that. Having a next gen media player included helps offset the price and may be the first player many people have. I know when the ps2 came out, I was too broke to buy a nice dvd player but my trusty ps2 covered both areas and at the time, the cost of the ps2 was cheap since it was taking care of multiple needs for me. I think the ps3 will do the same for a lot of people. That is, IF blu-ray lives and is a long term media.
But, there is always that part of me that wants the ps3 to fail just so console makers don’t get the idea that upping the price so much every generation works. If the PS3 does well and takes the market lead it will be a sure sign that consumers will pay whatever the console makers want, which could be bad for us broke consumers. If it fails, everyone will know that they shouldn’t drift too far from the “sweet spot” regardless what is included.
Though I don’t know if I like the MS approach any better, by selling the two separate (360 and HDDVD).
