Seems like a pretty good comp for a laptop. 😉
Any other suggestions?

get an IBM Thinkpad T30… they are a bit expensive for the features, but they will last for years without the slightest problems… great PC 😊

I’m thinking about the satelite for 800.
But while we’re on the subject of IBM, i heard that they were making their new laptops, with like a finger-print scanner for extra security?
what happens if you like, get a serious burn on that finger? will you never be able to access again? 😛

K well..
I thought about it.
And i’m going to need something that I will be able to watch (and preferably burn) DVD’s. Play games (like WoW), have great music editing program capabilities (because that’s kinda what i’ll be doing in university), and preferrably REALLY fast.. My comp is 128 ram 1.1 ghz.. Also I’ll need to be able to have wireless internet as well as the ability to plug it in at home into my adsl. oh. and i’d like to not need to update hardware for it for at least like 3 years…
Now..
Any suggestions?
(name brand + model number, i’ll look it up on ebay)

coming from an audio engineer trust me… you def cant get the kind of power you need from just any laptop. my sys is a p4 3.6 ghz, 2 GB of RAM, and all the goodies herein. And i use all of it in audio editing. get yourself a top of the line system if you are serious, otherwise you are just compromising.

Edwin is completely right. If you want a Laptop, unless you pay loads of money, the power will not compare to a desktop.

I want to go into “recording engineering” but there really any specific courses at the university where I live, and I can’t afford to go elsewhere.
Are you currently earning your degree in audio engineering or have you already?
-=EDIT=-
What about a Sony Vaio VGN-A690?

I am part of the Sonic Arts program at school and if you check out the sig, i am a certified Pro Tools Engineer. In case you dont know who they are… you will as soon as you take your first audio course. Dididesign are the leaders in auidio recordings and you should check out their website http://www.digidesign.com they have all the specs you need to use their hardware.
I would use their minimuns with caution use better than whatever the min is for your new lappie.

IMHO, vaios are well made computers, with great screens, but their prices are horrible.
@antman- yes, you can get T30 for less than $800… if you look long and hard enough…
for $200 more, you can get a very decent system… i got a T40 PM 1.5, 40gb 5400RPM HDD, 768mb RAM, and a dvdrom/cdrw for ~$1000 shipped.
if you are interested in the finger scan models… good luck… they can’t be found for less than about $1500…
a good place to check out is ... the thrid link down on the page has an outstanding forum, and the first link has good deals on new TPs (they are out of your price range)... there is also a good buy/sell forum… with decent deals…
tell ‘em bplaut sent you 😉

1 question.
Pentium M comps have lower numbers in ghz. why is that? Is it like apple where an apple 1.2 is equivalent to a 2.something?

They do perform well, just check benchmarks for them against P4’s and AMD Athlons.
Google.

Pentium M’s (Centrino) have lower clock speeds than Desktop Pentiums due to the differences in architecture. Pentium M’s are built to consume less power than its bigger brother, which makes it better for laptops. Plus, it gets much less hot. I don’t know an exact conversion, but you could compare a Centrino 1.6 Laptop to say a P4 2.6-2.8 range desktop.

So, should i get PM or P4? (I’d like 2.8 ghz+)

Well, that depends. Do you want just pure power? If so, pick teh p4, but remember, it will get extremely hot, and it will consume a lot of juice- battery life is much shorter (by about 50%). Usually, P4 laptops are heavier too. This is the more affordable option though, if on a budget.
If you want pretty good power (I’m not sure how high centrinos have gotten now) and longer battery life and won’t burn your lap, then the centrino is teh way to go. They are more expensive though.
Both have their ups and downs, so you just have to weigh the options of both and see what better suits your needs and budget.

Money, well how much more are we talkin about? like $100?
I need something that will last (without needing to upgrade much), and be fast.

i would assume that you meant that you cant put it together….
go to http://www.cybertronpc.com
get their number
and tell them that you want a tower like Edwin from Savvy Productions! the tower alone will set you back about 800 after shipping or something like that.
