Which is a bigger disaster? War on Iraq or Vietnam? |

as far as I’m concerned, vietnam was worse, but then again, the war on Iraq isn’t over yet. The war on Iraq is even less popular than Vietnam was though.

People may compare and contrast Vietnam with our current situation but they’d be wrong for doing so. I think going into Iraq was a mistake but obviously it will never be the equivalent of Vietnam. We lost many more soldiers and more people at the time disagreed with going there. This country is pretty evenly split on whether Iraq was a good choice or not. The only test to this theory is time. Over the course of the next 5-10 years will there actually be a democratic republic like ours? Probably not. It takes a considerable amount of time, money, and effort on both our part and on the part of the Iraqi citizens. There may be an established government and its systems but it will be a long time until they are able to stand on their own. In 10-15 years we may be able to answer this question more directly, but I highly doubt and very much hope that this war will never equate to that in Vietnam.

I think the responses will vary by age groups also. I wasn’t around when Vietnam happened, so I relate to the war in Iraq more. Reading about war and being alive during a time of war impact a person differently. I do agree, however, that it’s hard to compare the two to begin with.

What JBeana said. I hear all this stuff about Vietnam, but I wasn’t there. Still, because Vietnam issues seem to still be lingering around I see it has having a more profound effect thus far. I voted ‘nam.

assuming bush rigs another election… just wait for syria, iran, and north korean wars. but that’s nothing compared to world war 3 which we will fight with china when they invade taiwan.
in response to the question though, id say vietnam. we failed miserably in both but we will not lose as many people in iraq as in vietnam. but if i am drafted in a couple years, i will hate this war more than anything.

The draft’s not coming back. It was just a political move, Bush mentioning that.

[quote author=“HectorGearLive”]The draft’s not coming back. It was just a political move, Bush mentioning that.
The draft bill was actually proposed by Congressman Charles Rangel, from the 15th District of New York (Harlem). It’s been twisted into one of those political moves/scare tactics against Bush things, but it Rangel actually proposed it less because he wanted a draft and more because he wanted to raise some serious questions about why minorities and the poor make up most of the military. He thought that if there was a draft (or talk of a draft), it would make the decision to go to war more involved, and more serious (think: how many people are for the war, but would change their minds in a second if they thought they might actually need to fight in it).
A lot of people speculate that if Bush is re-elected, there is actually a very serious chance of a draft being passed. The fact is, Bremer and many in the Pentagon say we didn’t send enough troops, and it’s clear we don’t have enough troops to “win the peace”, and Bush isn’t able to get a significant international presence in Iraq, so clearly things can’t continue this way forever…

im vietnamese myself and i have to say that vietnam war was bad. If there was no war in vietnam, i could’ve been living in Vietnam right now. I was a baby when i moved to the US becuase there was no way to live in peace in Vietnam. Even trying to move away from Vietnam was hard as everyone tried to sneak out of VIetnam and if you were caught by a Vietcong, you could’ve been killed.

The thing that I fear the most is that we’re attacked somewhere like North Korea or if Iran fires missles on Israel. What do we do then? All of our troops are in Iraq. We just pulled over 30,000 troops out of South Korea and put them into Iraq. The truth is that we’re overextended and if something happens a draft isn’t that far off. I would never support a draft unless it was something closely resembling World War II. That was a just and noble cause for the good of humanity…hell yeah, sign me up, but not for Bush. I’ll see you in Canada. 😉

Did anyone watch the debates tonight? Bush denied up and down that here would be a draft. This makes me highly wary of his ulterior motives. I was never for this war, and I find it frightening that we may be forced to fight in it if the draft was indeed reinstated.

The fact of the matter is, we don’t know what will happen, but I don’t think that Bush is going about it in the right way.

Well what do you think would be the right way? He said there will not be a draft while he is the president of the United States. What more clearer asnwser could you ask for?

We all know that Kerry is a notorious “flip-flopper”. But what we fail to see is that Bush has done his share of flip-flopping. He says one thing now, but who knows what will happen later? Do you really trust a man who told the nation that war would be our last resort, only to hastily rush into things and put us in the situation we are in now?
