Dropping Dimes Mock Draft Blog 2007: Round 2, Pick 6 - Dwight Howard

The Fig Cap: “Shoot, my game is so pretty, the rim should kiss me back!”
Yes, the love continues for Orlando Magic players with ‘Shard going with the previous pick, but have no fear, Tony Battie won’t be the next selection. And neither will Pat Garrity. However, the Man-Child, Dwight Howard IS being chosen here and some of it does have to do with that aforementioned ‘Shard guy. Right off the bat, I’ll say that both are getting pay-haid after signing new contracts with the Magic and it’s fitting that they are both in the money at the same time because both of their values could go hand-in-hand with how they play off of each other.

Wow, can you believe that Rashard Lewis was selected in Round 3, pick 4 last year? A lot has changed since then - Brittney Spears is divorced, Paris Hilton was in jail, Rosie O’Donnell quit “The View,” and eventually replaced by Whoopi Goldberg. Jeez, I need to put down those gossip magazines! (ED: No doubt, woman!)
In the fantasy basketball world, prior to the Kevin Garnett trade, one of the major headlines this offseason was the free agent signing of Rashard Lewis by the Orlando Magic. The Magic was looking for a 3-point presence to help prevent defenses from collapsing in on the man-child, Dwight Howard. In Rashard Lewis they have that 3-point presence and a lot more!

With Dwyane Wade getting selected in the first round, this team is supplied with a solid base of roto success. While I could’ve chosen to draft a big guy, several of them were just selected with previous picks. I could’ve chosen another guard, but Jason Kidd and Chris Paul just fell off of the board. Thus, we’ll look at a younger guy that provides one of the better well-rounded games in the fantasy arena.
Points? Check.
Rebounds? Check.
Assists? Check.
Steals? Check.
Field Goal Percentage? Check.
Free Throw Percentage? Check.
Alright, you’re hired.
Andre Iguodala, SG/SF, Philadelphia 76ers

I had to let our first podcast marinate a little at the top of our page. It’s not every day Kevin Garnett gets traded after all! The Atlantic Division is getting crowded! Certainly in terms of fantasy impact, New Jersey no longer has the best trio in the division. Isn’t it great to have a huge trade like this to break up the summer doldrums? What else is going on in sports these days, besides the Tour de Farce?
This pick acquitted himself well last year in terms of answering the questions about his age and injury issues.

Kevin Garnett To The Boston Celtics: Breaking Down The GAP

The Fig Cap: “Wait, it’s not official… yet.”
The trade that sends Kevin Garnett from his beloved “Sota” to Beantown is all but done with the only thing delaying the seemingly inevitable move being a money issue. And we all know how situations concerning money can easily be resolved, right? Sarcasm aside, it would take a huge change of mind on Garnett’s end to kill the deal, but if The Big Ticket wants to punch his own ticket to the NBA Finals by going through the weaker Eastern Conference, this will get done.
But what will the fantasy basketball impact be? Well, when dealing with the fact there will be three 20-point scorers on the same team, it will be tough to determine. Specifically, will there be enough basketballs to go around? Honestly, amongst Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, there really isn’t a ball hog in the group. Okay maybe The Truth, but Pierce never had a choice on most nights during the chaos that’s been the Celtics for the past several seasons.

Fig Cap: “Oh man, I’m going to put the sickest move on this guy, I’m about to crap my own shorts!”
Over here at Dropping Dimes, we love us some Chris Paul. So much so, we sponsor his page on every stat/historical geek’s favorite basketball website, Basketball-Reference.com... ahem, hopefully, we’re every fantasy basketball geek’s favorite blog - thanks for the support by the way! That’s also something every Hornets player on the other end of a CP3 dime says as well. Paul has proven that he has all the tools and talent for being the next big thing as far as point guards go (Deron Williams be damned!) and soon enough (when Steve Nash and Jason Kidd finally keel over and retire), CP3 will be PG1.

Can you feel the love? The string of big men continues in the Dropping Dimes fantasy mock draft. Pau Gasol may fly under the fantasy radar because he missed 22 games at the beginning of last season with a busted left foot, but he could be worth getting picked this high. Teaming up international stars, Gasol and Yao Ming is a solid foundation to dominate big ball play and gig men that average 20-10 in fantasy b-ball are hard to find - not harder then finding a sober story of Lindsey Lohan, however. In two center leagues, securing two all-star centers in arguably the weakest position in regards to depth can be a solid investment. When other GM’s may be forced to draft a center later in the draft, you will have the luxury to draft the best available player.

Rare is it that you can find a big man in fantasy hoops that doesn’t hurt you in any statistical categories. Most just decimate your free throw percentage, while some turn the ball over about four times a game, and some can’t block shots. Let’s face it…the center in fantasy hoops is just a necessary evil. Fantasy owners are typically stuck with players that they wouldn’t own for any other reason but because they have to fill up a center spot.
The player that I’m choosing with the 12th overall pick could easily go in the top eight if he would just be able to stay healthy. If you take his per-game averages, he’s one of the best players in the league. You stretch said numbers out by the number of games he’s managed to play over the past few seasons, and it’s not so great.
However, given the lack of depth at the position and my despise for players that kill your free throw percentage, I’m taking a swing at one of the riskier health-bets in the league.
Yao Ming, C, Houston Rockets

I wrote about Elton Brand last yearwhen he was the eighth pick of the first round. The Clippers did not do as well in 2006-07 which mostly explains why Elton was not in the fantasy limelight as much, but Brand Name did regain center eligibility the year. He must be feeling pretty comfortable about his game since he has time to be a movie producer and managed to get Batman i.e. Christian Bale to star in his movie.
Elton lost in a close vote to Paul Pierce in our one-on-one tourney but when it comes to fantasy hoops, the advertising trumps “The Truth” as Brand Name will be picked before Pierce in every draft out there.

Chris Bosh is a mystery to me, but I hear through the Canadian grapevine that he’s a pretty good basketball player. Too bad no one really knows. I mean, unless you’re Canadian.
