Jeff Conaway

Jeff Conaway, 60, died Friday after being taken off of life support. The actor, whose credits include the movie Grease, was in a coma for most of the month.

Older generations remember him as the funny, cocky Bobby Wheeler on Taxi. More recently he appeared on the first and second seasons of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew, where he was shockingly incoherent and physically weak. But he’s probably best remembered for being Kenickie, main sidekick to John Travolta’s Danny Zukco in Grease.

Travolta released a statement shortly after Conaway’s death was made official: "Jeff Conaway was a wonderful and decent man, and we will miss him. My heartfelt thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this very difficult time."

Marilu Henner, who played Elaine O'Connor-Nardo on Taxi, said that “Jeff was like a brother,” to her.

Tony Danza and I visited Jeff in the hospital almost daily over the past two weeks,” she added. Danza played Tony Banta on Taxi through its entire run. “Jeff looked the healthiest I’d seen him in a long time and I really thought that he was going to come out of this. I will miss my talented, handsome, loving friend so much.”

He never quite awakened from the coma, which lasted for more than two weeks. Conaway was found unconscious in his home before being taken to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition. His feeding tube and ventilator were removed on Friday by Conaway’s family members, over the protestations of the actor’s longtime girlfriend Vikki Lizzi (who is also familiar to Rehab watchers).

Dr. Drew Pinsky says “there is no evidence showing Jeff died from an overdose. This was aspiration with overwhelming pneumonia and sepsis. Jeff is another example of a pharmaceutical death from the over-utilization of prescription drugs.” Sepsis is full-body inflammation and/or infection.

“Yet again another beautiful soul is wasted due to the growing problem of pharmaceutical addition,” said Corey Feldman, who has been flying solo sing lifelong BFF Corey Haim died under similar circumstances in March, 2010. "I have lost way too many friends because of irresponsible practices where doctors are overmedicating obvious addicts,” Felman added.

Conaway had one stepson with wife Kerri Young Conaway, his second marriage (of which the status is unknown). He leaves behind two sisters, Shreve and Michele Goffin.

His long career spans several generations through many mediums -- film, scripted TV, reality TV -- and his absence is being keenly felt by the industry. Even celebrities who didn’t know Conaway have tweeted their reactions. Miley Cryus, along with a picture from Grease, tweeted “RIP Jeff Conaway. I’ll see you in another life.”

Alyssa Milano sent a simple “Rest in Peace” out to Conaway.

Steven Adler, who was on the second season of Celebrity Rehab along with Jeff, wrote that Conaway “was an amazing actor, dancer and talented singer. He was a wonderful, heartfelt person. Glad he was a part of my life.”

Conaway’s problems with addiction became evident while he was working on Taxi, from which he was subsequently fired for drug abuse on set. He battled lifelong back problems, which led to the prescription drug abuse.
