Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's personal physician

Police officers and federal agents in Houston Wednesday. Agents now suspect that Michael Jackson, King of Pop, was the victim of manslaughter. It seems that Murray is of some interest in the case. Murray was the doctor on hand at the time of Jackson’s death, and accompanied the singer to the hospital where professionals where unable to revive him.

The LAPD has said that Murray is not considered a suspect, though clearly investigators are looking for some form of evidence or information that somehow relates to the physician. Currently, there is no record of a search warrant for Murray’s medical office or his private home in Las Vegas. At this time, the cause of ’s death remains unknown.

DEA agents went through the Armstrong Medical Clinic for approximately two and one half hours, purportedly in search of documents. Agents left with an image of a computer hard drive and twenty-one separate documents. In criminal cases, such as manslaughter, doctor-patient confidentiality no longer exists.

The results of two different autopsies on Michael Jackson, one conducted by the coroner’s office and one instigated privately by the Jackson family, have not yet been divulged. The full results of all toxicology tests will not be available for at least one more week.

According to Murray’s attorney Ed Chernoff, “the search was conducted by members of the DEA, two Robbery-Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department and Houston police officers.” Chernoff was on the premises the entire time the search was conducted. The warrant gave the officials the right to search and seize items that they “believed constituted evidence of the offense of manslaughter.”

The Murray camp was not expecting the presence of federal agents on the property. “This is unexpected to us,” Chernoff told reporters when asked about the events.

“This is an LAPD case,” said DEA spokesman Rusty Payne. “We’re really just assisting.” When asked, the agent confirmed that the search was related to the drug Propofol. This is a powerful sedative which can be used as a general anesthetic. It is administered IV and, according to , is meant to be given in “a controlled environment.” Alcohol, pain medications, barbiturates (this includes sleep-inducing and seizure medication),anxiety medications, cold medicine and even some herbal products interact with Propofol. Smoking, drinking caffeinated beverages, taking weight loss or nutritional supplements and using other drugs could affect the way Propofol works. Side effects in a rather long list include seizures, skin rashes, difficultly breathing and heart palpitations. It is advisable to abstain from smoking, drinking alcohol or consuming other drugs within a twenty-four hour period of using Propofol.
