Get Discovered at the City of Fame
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Music
Chances are you won’t be discovered at a drug store counter or the corner pub that showcases local bands, but now you have a better chance at this new website, the City of Fame. Upload your music videos or screen tests and perhaps you will be noticed, not that we think a lot of agents will be hanging on the site. Still, it is a step up from YouTube and MySpace. Registration is free and we wonder, if you make it, will the site ask for a percentage?
(Thanks, Frani)

Spread Your Tunes on IACmusic
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Music
Independent Artist Company Music is apparently drumming up business, as we received an e-mail from them telling us that they thought we should open up an account. While it’s true we can’t play the violin, we thought the least we could do is let them know that we think that was a noble effort on their part. If you profess be an indie musical whiz, sign up for the service, build DMDs via their Ultrapage, then sell them and keep the profits. By the way, IAC has station managers to help you promote your tunes if they suspect you have talent.
(Thanks, Toby)

Kwout Quotes
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Internet
Kwout has come up with a way to embed a quote into your blog or website (including Flickr and Tumblr) with one click. Simply type an URL onto the home page and click their bookmarklet. Drag your mouse around the area to take the quote from, select color, size and shape, and click the “Cut Out” button. You then receive the quote with hyperlinks and the embed code. It really is quite easy, once you get the hang of moving around your mouse. Others can take your quote and post it on their website as well.

Sell Your Old Tronics
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Cell Phones, Handhelds, Music, Portable Audio / Video, Video Games
BuyMyTronics, formerly known as BuyMyBrokenIpod, has obviously increased the amount of old gadgets that they are willing to purchase. This includes such items as Game Cubes, Playstations 1, 2, and 3, Wii’s, DS Lites, iPhones and Zunes. As you send them your broken stuff they send them off to other companies or chop off parts. Working and/or phased out gadgets get refurbished and sent to resellers. The site is planning on expanding to include cell phones, digital cameras, GPS devices and camcorder. What a great way to pick up a little spare change for the holidays. You might just earn enough to buy yourself a little good cheer.

Check Your URL With Blog Readability Test
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech
Want to know how intelligent your readers have to be to get you? Critics Rant has devised a Blog Readability Test. Just paste in your URL to find out how much education is needed to understand it. It also works on MySpace, Livejournals, Facebook, and most other profiles and Websites. We plugged in Google, which came out rated “Genius,” MySpace and Facebook ranked “High School,” but you only need a “Jr. High” background to handle Yahoo. We’re not exactly sure of the method to determine the outcome, but we found it to be a pleasant enough diversion for about the length of time it takes to read the average blog.

This is No Ordinary Pumpkin
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Household, Internet, Misc. Tech

We came across this site that features some of the most cleverly created pumpkins we have seen. Tom Nardone is more of an artist than a carver and we just thought we would share some of his special veggies. Extreme Pumpkins also features how-to advice, fire, light and pyrotechnics, design strategy, preservation, and what tools to use when carving. Tom’s site holds a yearly Halloween contest for other creative carvers, so feel free to send them a pic of your own jack-o-lantern this year.
(Thanks, Joyce)

Only Rednecks Need Apply
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet
For all the blue-collar workers in the world, have we got a site for you. Self-described as appealing to “redneck workers,” the newly established Redneck Jobs features opportunities for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and nurses, and includes construction foremen and business owners, among others. Founder Art Fyvolen claims that Redneck Jobs may be the “single largest market share of any niche,” at least in the South and Southwest. Post a job, put up a resume, receive job alerts, or search for a gig or potential employee in any U.S. state and parts of Canada.

Hackers Protest on UN Website
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, Internet, Mods / Hacks
Three hackers broke into the United Nation’s website this past weekend, posting the message, “Hey Ysrail and Usa dont kill children and other people Peace for ever No war.” Identifying themselves as “kerem125,” “Gsy,” and “MOsted,” this and other messages were posted on pages that were used for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. That same group claims to have hacked into several websites. After taking down the “offensive” pages, the original words were put back. Although we are not sure we agree with the means, it seems to have been intended as a caring end.

FreeWebs Make for Simplified Webcrafting
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Home Entertainment, Internet
FreeWebs not only helps you design and host your own website, they do it in a way that allows any user the capability. Created by the Mokhtarzada brothers, they figured that they would design the site for others so that it would be “easy enough for their mother to use.” You can choose from hundreds of templates, create a single page or full site, then add a blog, forum, chatroom, pictures, videos, and widgets to spice it up with their WYSIWYG editor. Make it personal or turn it into a business site. Our props to those who are most kind to those of us who are not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier.
