Guinness Book of World Records - Gamer’s Edition

Serious gamers, Guinness is about to publish their second annual Gamer’s Edition of their “Book of World Records.” Available February 4 for $21.95, it should feature reviews, spreads, interviews, tips and cheats. Last year’s included odd records, gaming trivia and such tidbits as
“The largest voice cast for a video game was 339 actors for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.”

What we will tell you is that if you sucked at this trivia test, you can take another on Mental Floss’ Daily Lunchtime Quiz. Choose between Girlie Middle Names for Men, Discontinued Ben & Jerry’s Flavors or Bands found on MySpace, Quarter Backs, and more. The site lists how many times the quiz was taken and the average score.

A Grand Slam for GSN?

There are a lot of different game shows out there, which creates a lot of game show winners. But some of these winning stars blaze brighter – and longer – than others. GSN’s Grand Slam will pit these winners together in a battle royale of wits, to see which big winner is the true champion above all others. Hosted by Dennis Miller and Amanda Byram (the Swan), Grand Slam will pit past winners against each other in a head-to-head contest that will determine once and for all which winner boasts the most brain power. Grand Slam contestants will include Jeopardy winners Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, and Millionaire winners Kenvin Olmstead and John Carpenter, to name a few.

Test Trivia Knowledge with VH1

VH1 is bringing back the World Series of Pop Culture for a second season this summer, promising more obscure trivia, more teams of three, and more money to give away. Though VH1 has been known for coming up with some real bombs in the past (what exactly is the deal with Charm School?), the World Series of Pop Culture last year offered a bevy of interesting trivia and quite a few teams that were almost impossible to root for. Will this year’s competitors hold more appeal?

Are Ten-Year-Olds Smarter Than You?

Leave it to FOX to ask the question no other network dares: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Most adults would say yes, of course. In a new big-budget game show (a deviation for FOX, a network that relies largely upon animated series, intense dramas, and reality TV) college grads will be pit against a class of five fifth graders in an effort to test their general knowledge smarts. There’s only one catch: all of the questions range from first to fifth grade class teachings. The show will run every night this week after FOX’s mega-hit American Idol, in an effort to boost up ratings for the fledging program. Cute little nine, ten, and eleven-year olds, a famous redneck for a host (Jeff Foxworthy), and plenty of money to throw around (the prize for answering only eleven questions? One million dollars) – FOX is banking on a hit. Think you’ve got what it takes to beat fifth graders at school trivia? Then you probably aren’t watching the show.

FOX Adds Primetime Game Show to Roster

Not one to miss out on the game show mania, a la Deal or No Deal (NBC) and upcoming 1 vs. 100 (NBC) and Set for Life (ABC), FOX will now be offering their own primetime game show to the mix. The Rich List will debut later this season, produced by the British company that brought you The Weakest Link (ugh!) and Dog Eat Dog (double ugh!). The show will challenge teams of strangers by having them complete lists of topics, from trivia to textbook topics. To add to the excitement, the teams will wager on how many answers they expect they can provide—highest bid gets to complete the list. And of course, if they don’t make their estimated number, the other team goes on to face another team. According to Mike Darnell, head of alternative programming at FOX, “This is a truly original concept, unlike anything else currently on air, which promises to be exciting and addictive viewing.” Don’t expect any famous American talent to host the show, as British morning show host Eamonn Holmes will helm The Rich List.
