Windows Phone 7 review round-up

Microsoft's latest foray into the mobile space, Windows Phone 7, is now for sale throughout the US. How do these new devices fare? Should you throw your iPhone or Blackberry out of the window for a brand new Windows Phone? Or is this just another device for the history books? Well, we've given you our Windows Phone 7 review (as well as a review of the HTC Surround!), but if you wanted a second opinion, here's a list of reviews to help make up your mind:

Engadget has a very in-depth review, going point by point over every feature of the phone, along with pictures and commentaries. They refer to their initial preview, saying that "it finally has the fit and finish of a fully realized product" and "there's a lot to like or even love in WP7". At the end of their review are also links to more reviews on the individual Windows Phone devices.
Gizmodo follows in with another slightly less extensive review, in which they conclude with their stamp of approval.
The New York Times has a fairly short review that asks several questions such as "will these battle plans help catapult Microsoft’s latest smartphone attempt into a relevant standing in this important space" and concludes by saying that "so far the new AT&T phones seems to have everything going for them".
Apart from the written reviews, what I typically prefer are video reviews such as this one from MobileTechReview in which they go over every feature in this very in-depth 27 mins 2-parts review. They also have videos about the individual devices.

Windows Phone 7 devices now available in the US

Windows Phone 7, Microsoft's latest foray into the mobile space, is now available to all in the US. The company's primary partner is AT&T, and they have the Samsung Focus and HTC Surround (see our HTC Surround review and photo gallery) for $199 with a 2 years contract, with the LG Quantum launching in a few days. The phones are also available without a contract for $499. Meanwhile, T-Mobile has the HTC HD7 for $199, with the Dell Venue coming in later this year. Microsoft has stated that they will put $400 million towards advertising Windows Phone 7 as they hope to compete with the iPhone and Android phones this holiday season. Gartner predicts the company's share of the mobile space will climb above 5% by next year.

Samsung Galaxy Tab now available in UK, hits US Nov 10

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one of the most hyped Android tablets of the season, and it's almost here. The device sports a 7-inch display and runs Android 2.2. Samsung is claiming you'll get 7 hours of battery life out of the Galaxy Tab, which isn't bad at all. Expect a front-facing camera, rear camera, and all the typical stuff you'd expect from Android (web, mail, Adobe Flash, 80,000 Android Marketplace apps.) While we've seen other Android based tablets come out this year, this is hailed as the first true iPad competitor.

The release date is this Monday, Nov 1st in the UK (that's today!), and it comes to North America later this month. Every major carrier will have it subsidized for around $400, with T-Mobile starting on Nov 10, following with Sprint on Nov 14 and then Verizon and US Cellular later on. Amazon also just added it to their listings for $699 without contract.

It's clear that this device is going to have a strong demand, it's the best tablet out there that isn't named "iPad," and with the holidays right around the corner, we're expecting this one to be a success for Samsung.

HTC HD7 Windows Phone 7 specs leaked

HTC is the lucky company set to launch the first series of Windows Phone 7 devices, and by the looks of it on paper the HD7 (successor to the HD2) is going to be a great competitor in the smartphone market. The HD7 is expected to be launched at T-Mobile first in the US, though no official statements have been made by HTC, T-Mobile, or Microsoft on the matter.

Some of the notable features on the HD7 include a vibrant 480x800 WVGA resolution; kickstand notifications; Bluetooth 2.1; 5-megapixel cam; 1Ghz processor, and 802.11 WiFi.

Samsung Epic 4G ad with Master Chief?

If you’ve seen the new Samsung Epic 4G commercial then you might have been fooled into watching the whole thing thinking it was a new Halo: Reach commercial (raises hand). The similarities are probably not a coincidence considering Halo: Reach is set to be the biggest game of the year, and all eyes are on it right now. Knowing this, Samsung could have purposely chosen to borrow the money making look of Master Chief.

The start of the ad depicts a character bearing a strong resemblance to Halo’s Master Chief. The pseudo Chief is then chased by an alien space craft which bombards the Spartan-like clone with some heavy missile fire. Unmasking himself, the Samsung’s Spartan hops into his own aircraft, epic chase ensues. The terrain containing the massive battle is then revealed to take place in the palm of your hand - the slogan for the theater-like experience promised by the Samsung Galaxy S. All Halo inspired themes aside, it’s a pretty cool commercial, though you have no clue what it’s about until the very end. Microsoft states that “the commercial in question is not sanctioned by Microsoft.” However, whether or not Microsoft will want to have the look alike Master Chief hero pulled from the air is not known at this point.

T-Mobile selling Samsung Vibrant for just $99, today only

Looks like T-Mobile is doing their best to stay in the news today. Aside from announcing the T-Mobile G2 HSPA+ smartphone this morning, they’ve also got a killer deal on the Samsung Vibrant. Just for today, they’ve got an online-only special where you can buy the Vibrant for $99. If you are unfamiliar, this phone typically sells for $199, and it’s worth every penny of that price with the amazing Super AMOLED display and 1GHz processor. Seriously, if you want a great phone on T-Mobile at a great price, you’ll wanna jump on this deal.

T-Mobile G2 Android smartphone first to use HSPA+

Okay, so we know that T-Mobile launched their super-fast HSPA+ network recently, and up to this point, only data-specific devices are able to take advantage of those increased speeds. However, that’s about to change with the impending launch of the T-Mobile G2. Yup, the G1, the first Android phone to hit the market a couple of years ago, is finally getting its successor in the G2, and it’ll be the first phone to support HSPA+ speeds. It will be available next month, and it’ll be built by HTC (which means it should be awesome.) Here’s a statement from T-Mobile on the news:

“T-Mobile is proud to have launched the world’s first Android-powered phone, the T-Mobile G1, which captured the imagination of developers and consumers alike nearly two years ago. Now, we are readying its successor - the T-Mobile G2 with Google. Delivering tight integration with Google services, the G2 will break new ground as the first smartphone specifically designed for our advanced HSPA+ network, which delivers today’s available 4G speeds. In the coming weeks we’ll share more details about the G2, including information on how current T-Mobile customers can get exclusive first access. Visit http://g2.t-mobile.com to register for updates.”

iPhone 4 unlock now available with ultrasn0w!

We knew that once the iPhone 4 jailbreak dropped, it would be just a matter of time before the unlock method would be made available. Well, two days later, it’s here. Ultrasn0w, the software unlock we’ve come to know and love over the years, has been updated to version 1.0-1. With that update comes support for the iPhone 4 baseband 01.59 and iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.12.01, and 05.13.04. If those numbers confuse you, no worries, this basically just means that any iPhone 3G/3GS/4 device that you have in your hand as of today is unlockable. Just download ultrasn0w through Cydia, and you’re all set!

BlackBerry Pearl 3G coming in May with 802.11n

BlackBerry is finally looking to bring something even better to their consumer handset line than the BlackBerry Pearl (which has been around for over three years now,) and the BlackBerry Pearl 3G looks to be a worthy follow-up. This will be the first BlackBerry, Pearl or otherwise, to sport 802.11n Wi-Fi, and it will also boast a 3.2 megapixel camera, 256MB storage (with microSD expansion up to 32GB,) GPS, and a 360 x 400 display. Even more interesting is that, aside from the multiple colors you can choose from, you also get to choose between two difference keyboard layouts. You get the numberic 14-key or the SurePress 20-key. You’ll be able to get a BlackBerry Pearl 3G sometimes in May, likely from both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Analyst: iPhone will soon be available on all US wireless carriers

Verizon iPhone Gotta love those analysts, as they’re always good for stirring the rumor mill - this time it’s BusinessWeek reporting claims that Apple will likely be ending it’s exclusive relationship with AT&T in order to bring the iPhone to all major US carriers. According to Tim Horan, telecommunications analyst at Oppenheimer & Co., T-Mobile USA should have the iPhone available this summer (whatever the follow-up to the iPhone 3GS turns out to be,) with Verizon and Sprint getting the goods this fall. Even Clearwire will be able to get in on the action, as they are expected to get the iPhone sometime in 2011. Of course, AT&T has been the exclusive carrier of the iPhone since it launched in June 2007.

Of course, Apple has the perfect opportunity to announce changes like this if they’d like, as they’ve got what many are predicting to be a colossal Apple event on January 27th, just two days from now. We’ll keep you posted.
