A-DATA SH93 super-rugged portable hard drive

I’m not in the habit of keeping my portable hard drives next to the bathtub, but if I did, the SH93 from A-DATA would be a legitimate contender. These new portable HDDs can last up to 30 minutes when plunged into one meter of water. And hey, not only is it water-resistant, but it’s durable in other ways. The rubberized coating can survive the military MIL-STD-810F drop test, so you know it’s solid, right?

No word on pricing or availability as yet, but they will come in a red or yellow finish in memory capacities of 240, 320, 500, and 640GB.

There is never a shortage of USB flash drives on the market, and what makes Transcend’s JetFlash V70 different is its rubber coating. It is capable of surviving some good drops, which is important when you are lugging several of these things around. And don’t get me started on the importance of the tethered cap holder.

The color of the drive tells you much memory each of them have. The purple is 4 GB, the orange is 8 GB, and the red is 16 GB. No word on the price, though.

For those who want a little drive in their USB thumb drive, might we suggest the USB drive based on the 1959 Mini Cooper? Sure, you may not be pulling off the Italian Job, but at least you’ll have 4GB worth of storage space. Of course, style costs, and this will cost you $102. Yeah, you read that right.

Sony’s Ridiculous 2TB Memory Stick XC

Sony is getting ready to drop the 2TB Memory Stick XC. Since the XC maintains the same form factor as other Memory Sticks, we are going to guess that these will end up being backwards-compatible with the rest of the XC line. Considering that SD cards are struggling to get to 64GB, this 2TB feat is pretty incredible. According to Sony, the XC range will use the exFAT file storage system, which is far and away better than the antiquated FAT12/16/32. Of course, this will all come at a price, because it is a proprietary Sony item, after all. Those details haven’t been announced yet, but let’s just say that we think it will be a while before the average photographer has one of these in their camera.

Digital Cowboy has put out a lot of interesting media players/portable disk drives before, and their latest, the Movie Cowboy, is their latest offering. This 2.5 NAS drive can stream all types of file formats to your HDTV including MPEG2 HD(ts,tp,trp), MPEG-1/2, Xvid, DAT, ISO, VOB, IFO, MKV(x.264), H.264, WMV9, ASF, MOV, RMVB, FLV, MP4, MotionJPEG video files, alongside MP3, AAC, OGG, AC3, DTS, MPEG1/2 Layer 1/2/3(MP3), MPEG2-2BC, MPEG-2/4 ACC-LG, WMA9(Pro) and FLAC audio files. Ports include a USB 2.0, HDMI/composite video, and even has an Ethernet port. It should be available next month for $209.

Apple Releases 2TB Time Capsule, Drops Price of 1TB

Apple has just announced that their Time Capsule network storage access points are getting storage upgrades. Formerly available in 500GB and 1TB storage capacities, the Time Capsules will now top out at 2TB, which sells for $500. The 1TB model has been dropped down to $300. Both are available now.

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty dependent on my USB flash drives. Except for the amount of storage they hold, most of them are pretty much the same. The Split Stick is different because it is double-sided.

So the user gets 4GB of memory, but it is divided into two 2GB partitions, if you will. That might be good if you want to differentiate your files, or if two people are sharing one stick. The Split Stick is available for $19.99 in colors of orange, blue, pink, red, black, violet, grey, or green.

Since we live in an age of personal security, it is important that the valuable information on our hard drives is locked down under lock and key. Fortunately, Freecom has released the Hard Drive Secure.

The Hard Drive Secure is a compact and portable external hard drive that can only be accessed with the use of an AES-encrypted RFID keycard. Passing the card through the reader gives the user access to their data in just seconds, while maintaining that extra level of security.

Okay, check it. We know that media consumption is growing rapidly, those torrents are flying fast and furiously, and sometimes you just want the convenience of not having to being a notebook with you. We get it. But really, there’s no excuse to drop $900 on Kingston’s DataTraveler 300 256GB thumb drive, okay? Just buy a netbook! Or four 64GB thumb drives for a fraction of the cost. These aren’t available yet in the US, so let’s hope that when they do make it over here, that price drops just a tad.
